Non sempre necessariamente bisogna attuare sensazionalismi o alzare i toni per farsi notare, spesso la semplicità e il lavoro bastano allo scopo. I social capita che possano essere di aiuto alle band più o meno note per comunicare una nuova uscita, o semplicemente per farsi conoscere, ma credetemi che per quello che concerne un genere di nicchia come il Progressive Rock, ciò potrebbe non bastare. Per questo le nostre case discografiche, seppure a loro volta di nicchia, possano attraverso il loro inestimabile lavoro far raggiungere agli artisti indipendenti una visione maggiore. Ma c’è chi al momento si accontenta di poco, o almeno credo, anche perché imbattendomi nella band Open The Paintbox, ho avuto questa sensazione di grande amore per la musica ma allo stesso tempo una difficoltà nel sapersi gestire. Dico questo perché è stato arduo trovare nel web informazioni sul caso, ma questo non significa che la validità della proposta del trio composto da Angelica Esposito (voce), Fabrizio Tuzza (tastiere), e Giovanni Costantino (chitarra, basso, programmazioni), sia minore a quella di altre band maggiormente considerate. Già il nome apre in me scenari Progressivi (Genesis) e Neo Progressivi (Pendragon), per questo su Bandcamp curioso vado subito ad ascoltare.
Ciò che leggo nelle poche informazioni scritte nella pagina, mostra tutto l’amore per questo immenso calderone sonoro, a conferma del mio buon intuito. Sono citate band come Genesis, King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd, Camel, Gentle Giant, The Flower Kings, Magenta, Spock's Beard, Tool, IQ oltre che ai grandi classici del Rock Queen, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica. Non c’è che dire, una buona presentazione.
Gli Open The Paintbox si formano a Messina nell’estate del 2006 da un idea di Fabrizio Tuzza e Giovanni Costantino con l’intento primario di trovarsi assieme e suonare buona musica, quella con cui si è cresciuti. Solo successivamente il duo si arricchisce con l’ingresso alla voce di Angelica Esposito. Le idee tuttavia sono chiare, lo scopo è quello di comporre materiale proprio e dopo alcuni singoli, nel 2024 esce questo “Lapse Of Time” formato da sette canzoni.
Facile intuire il significato del nome che si sono attribuiti, dipingere su una tela con molti colori è una analogia della musica.
L’album parla della grandezza del creato, della forza della natura e della nostra breve esistenza.
Si comincia con “Touching Waves” a rivelare le frequenze dell’universo e lo spronare l’individuo a non aver paura di gettarsi in queste sensazioni attraverso il suono etereo delle tastiere. Inevitabilmente subentrano paragoni con Pink Floyd e Genesis, l’apporto della chitarra acustica apre invece a scenari leggiadri in stile Orme. Le coralità e la voce di Esposito immergono l’ascoltatore in questo meraviglioso contesto.
“Everyday” affronta la quotidianità in loop in cui viviamo, dove la ricerca della luce può darci maggiori risposte al riguardo. La chitarra, questa volta elettrica immerge l’ascolto in un contesto Progressivo dalle radici storiche ma anche moderne, nella ricerca di una personalità su cui mettere le basi per uno specifico sound Open The Paintbox.
La breve “Time Laps” conduce a “Memories”, qui si analizza il ciclo della vita fra passato, presente e futuro, le nostre scelte e l’importanza della luna, che ci illumina anche nei momenti più bui. La canzone è altamente orecchiabile, meno sperimentale e introversa rispetto quanto ascoltato sino ad ora, grazie ad un inciso semplice e diretto.
Attraverso “Nightime Sky” c’è la consapevolezza di vivere un era tecnologica in cui siamo distratti da tutto, qui saremmo noi capaci di cogliere il senso di fratellanza? Il suono pacato delle tastiere disegna ambienti bucolici esaltati dal cantato sempre intenso e profondo. Belle le aperture strumentali.
Non manca la suite qui intitolata proprio “Lapse Of Time” ed è suddivisa in tre parti. Qui risiedono tutte le influenze e le capacità della band di mettere in luce i concetti e le qualità artistiche a propria disposizione. A mio avviso è il brano più coinvolgente e completo dell’album. In chiusura si può ascoltare la bonus track “Open The Paintbox – Starlight”, una chicca aperta da piano e voce. Il crescendo sonoro è altamente convincente.
La semplicità spesso paga, così la passione. Gli Open The Paintbox ci mostrano degli affreschi sonori in cui soffermarsi a guardare per potersi estraniare dalla quotidianità dei problemi, un lavoro sincero che sicuramente ha bisogno di maggiore attenzione per i particolari, ma che di fondo ha già basi solide. Sono sicuro che nel tempo il trio saprà sfruttare al meglio le proprie capacità, con la speranza che qualche addetto ai lavori possa mettere mano su questo progetto che al momento sento di consigliarvi. Social media happens to be of help to more or less known bands to communicate a new release, or simply to make themselves known, but believe me that for what concerns a niche genre like Progressive Rock, this may not be enough. That is why our record companies, though themselves niche, can through their invaluable work make independent artists reach a greater vision. But there are those who at the moment are content with little, or at least I think so, partly because coming across the band Open The Paintbox, I had this feeling of great love for music but at the same time a difficulty in knowing how to manage. I say this as it has been arduous to find information on the case on the web, but this does not mean that the validity of the proposal of the trio composed of Angelica Esposito (vocals), Fabrizio Tuzza (keyboards), and Giovanni Costantino (guitar, bass, programming), is less than that of other, more considered bands. Already the name opens in me Progressive (Genesis) and Neo Progressive (Pendragon) scenarios, so on Bandcamp curious I go immediately to listen.
What I read in the little information written on the page shows all the love for this immense sonic cauldron, confirming my good intuition. Bands such as Genesis, King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd, Camel, Gentle Giant, The Flower Kings, Magenta, Spock's Beard, Tool, IQ are mentioned in addition to the great Rock classics Queen, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica. That's nothing short of a good introduction.
Open The Paintbox formed in Messina in the summer of 2006 from an idea of Fabrizio Tuzza and Giovanni Costantino with the primary intent of getting together and playing good music, the music you grew up with. Only later was the duo enriched with the entry of Angelica Esposito on vocals. However, the ideas are clear, the aim is to compose their own material and after a few singles, in 2024 they released this “Lapse Of Time” consisting of seven songs.
Easy to guess the meaning of the name they have given themselves, painting on a canvas with many colors is an analogy of music.
The album is about the greatness of creation, the power of nature and our short existence.
It begins with “Touching Waves” to reveal the frequencies of the universe and the urging of the individual not to be afraid to throw themselves into these sensations through the ethereal sound of keyboards.
Inevitably comparisons to Pink Floyd and Genesis ensue, the contribution of acoustic guitar opening instead to graceful Orme-style scenarios. Esposito's choruses and vocals immerse the listener in this wonderful context.
“Everyday” addresses the looped everydayness in which we live, where the search for light can give us more answers in this regard. The guitar, this time electric immerses the listener in a Progressive context with historical but also modern roots, in the search for a personality on which to lay the foundation for a specific Open The Paintbox sound.
The short “Time Laps” leads to “Memories,” here analyzing the cycle of life between past, present and future, our choices and the importance of the moon, which illuminates us even in the darkest moments. The song is highly catchy, less experimental and introverted than what we have heard so far, thanks to a simple and straightforward aside.
Through “Nightime Sky” there is an awareness of living in a technological age where we are distracted by everything, would we here be able to grasp the sense of brotherhood? The calm sound of keyboards draws bucolic environments enhanced by the always intense and deep singing. Beautiful instrumental openings.
There is no shortage of the suite here titled precisely “Lapse Of Time” and it is divided into three parts. Here reside all the influences and the band's ability to bring out the concepts and artistic qualities at their disposal. In my opinion it is the most engaging and complete track on the album. In closing you can hear the bonus track “Open The Paintbox - Starlight,” a gem opened by piano and vocals. The sonic crescendo is highly convincing.
Simplicity often pays off, so does passion. Open The Paintbox show us sonic frescoes in which to pause and gaze in order to extricate oneself from the daily grind of problems, a sincere work that certainly needs more attention to detail, but which basically already has a solid foundation. I am sure that in time the trio will be able to make the most of their abilities, with the hope that some insider will be able to get their hands on this project, which at the moment I feel I can recommend.
