Spesso abbiamo letto oppure siamo entrati sull’argomento “che fine sta facendo la nostra musica” e chi in maniera più pessimistica e chi con uno sguardo più benevolo ne abbiamo dette di tutte. E’ vero che il mercato è in crisi, anche se il vinile sta prendendo sempre più piede, ma quando si costata la presenza di nuove band di giovani ragazzi intenti a suonare un genere antico quale il Progressive Rock, allora sta significando che un filo di speranza ancora c’è. Chiaramente non si parla più di mestiere, oggi le band suonano più per la passione, poche sono coloro che gliel’hanno fatta e questo soprattutto grazie alle numerose date live, dove si può veramente racimolare qualcosa. L’Italia è stata sempre sotto il mirino mondiale per il Prog, dobbiamo essere orgogliosi di tutte le band che si sono prodigate dagli anni ’70 a oggi. Purtroppo noi siamo un pubblico esterofila, dove vige la regola dell’erba del vicino è sempre più verde, invece abbiamo in casa band che nulla hanno da invidiare ad altre magari più blasonate straniere. Un bell’esempio giunge dai Tritop, formazione nata nel 2016 da un’idea del batterista Ivo Di Traglia che con i suoi amici Pierfrancesco Di Pofi (tastiere), Francesco Caponera (chitarra), Jacopo Tuzi (basso), Mattia Fagiolo (voce) e Iacopo Di Traglia (testi), riporta alla luce sia le sonorità anni ’70 (King Crimson, Yes, Genesis ed Emerson, Lake & Palmer) che il Prog più recente ad esempio caro a band come The Flower Kings o Spock’s Beard.
L’amore per il genere da parte dei Tritop è totale e lo si evince anche dalla volontà di accontentare i collezionisti del vinile, il disco “Rise Of Kassandra” è edito si in file (Spotify, Bandcamp etc.) ma anche in CD e LP, a testimonianza di quanto detto in precedenza. Con loro un esteso parterre di chitarristi ospiti, Pietro Cornacchia, Simone Cozzetto, Andrea Ricci, Vincenzo Mancini, Emanuele Andolfi, e Pasquale Ripa. Con l’artwork curato da Graziano Roccatani e una buona registrazione effettuata nei MStudio Center, il debutto è composto di quattro brani e questo fa già intendere la lunga durata dei stessi. Infatti, apre la mini suite “Rise Of Kassandra” con i suoi bei tredici minuti. Subito chitarra e mellotron in cattedra fra classicismi e Kaipa fanno alzare il pelo agli appassionati del Prog, annessi richiami Gentle Giant e Genesis, un immediato pugno allo stomaco. Da solo il pezzo vale l’album nel senso che qui si può ascoltare davvero di tutto, sia virtuosismi che melodie orecchiabili oltre agli immancabili cambi di ritmo. Una parola per la bellissima voce di Mattia Fagiolo, che da ancora il meglio nell’adiacente “Delighted Insanity”, vera e propria chicca Prog di rara bellezza. Qui Spock’s Beard e tanta energia grazie anche all’ottimo lavoro alla batteria di Ivo Di Traglia. La canzone più breve s’intitola “Island Of Servitude” con poco più di quattro minuti che mi fanno scaturire una riflessione, i Tritop sono giovani, ma hanno alle spalle un bagaglio culturale musicale ampio. Hanno ascoltato molto, ma soprattutto hanno assimilato, qui ci sento anche frammenti di Echolyn, magari mi sbaglio, tuttavia la materia storicamente la conoscono davvero bene. E veniamo al brano più bello del disco, la suite di ventiquattro minuti “The Sacred Law Of Retribution”, vera manna dal cielo per il classico Prog fans. Si apre con i giochi vocali in stile Gentle Giant e direi anche piuttosto Savatage style visto le chitarre elettriche. E poi via alla ricerca di nuovi intrecci sonori fra staffette di assolo e molto classicismo come piace a Lucassen degli olandesi Ayreon. Sottolineo anche la cura per gli arrangiamenti che fanno dell’ascolto un piacere assoluto.
Ritengo “Rise Of Kassandra” una delle migliori uscite dell’anno, ma non soltanto per il Prog italiano, bensì mondiale. I ragazzi hanno idee, passione, tecnica e classe da vendere, ne sentiremo parlare di più, ne sono sicuro, anche se fare Prog non è fare Trap e quindi consapevolmente si resta in un limbo per appassionati… Purtroppo! We have often read or entered the topic of “what is happening to our music” and some more pessimistically and some with a more benevolent outlook have said it all. It is true that the market is in crisis, even though vinyl is gaining momentum, but when you costate the presence of new bands of young guys intent on playing a genre as old as Progressive Rock, then it is signifying that a thread of hope is still there. Clearly we are no longer talking about craft, nowadays bands play more for the passion, few are those who have made it for them and this is mainly due to the many live dates, where you can really scrape something together. Italy has always been under the world's crosshairs for Prog, we should be proud of all the bands that have done their best from the 1970s to today. Unfortunately, we are a foreign audience, where the rule of the grass is always greener, instead we own bands at home that have nothing to envy to other maybe more emblazoned foreign ones.
A fine example comes from Tritop, a lineup born in 2016 from an idea of drummer Ivo Di Traglia who, with his friends Pierfrancesco Di Pofi (keyboards), Francesco Caponera (guitar), Jacopo Tuzi (bass), Mattia Fagiolo (vocals) and Iacopo Di Traglia (lyrics), brings back both the sounds of the 1970s (King Crimson, Yes, Genesis and Emerson, Lake & Palmer) and the more recent Prog for example dear to bands like The Flower Kings or Spock's Beard.
Tritop's love for the genre is total and it is also evident from their willingness to please vinyl collectors; the record “Rise Of Kassandra” is published yes on file (Spotify, Bandcamp etc.) but also on CD and LP, a testament to the above. With them an extended parterre of guest guitarists, Pietro Cornacchia, Simone Cozzetto, Andrea Ricci, Vincenzo Mancini, Emanuele Andolfi, and Pasquale Ripa. With artwork curated by Graziano Roccatani and a good recording made in the MStudio Centers, the debut consists of four tracks, and this already hints at the long duration of the same. In fact, the mini-suite “Rise Of Kassandra” opens with its fine thirteen minutes. Immediately guitar and mellotron in the cathedra between classicism and Kaipa raise the hackles of Prog fans, adjoining Gentle Giant and Genesis references, an immediate punch to the gut.
The piece alone is worth the album in the sense that one can really hear everything here, both virtuosity and catchy melodies in addition to the unfailing changes of rhythm. A word for the beautiful voice of Mattia Fagiolo, who gives his best again in the adjacent “Delighted Insanity”, a true Prog gem of rare beauty. Here Spock's Beard and a lot of energy thanks also to Ivo Di Traglia's excellent drum work. The shortest song is titled “Island Of Servitude” with just over four minutes that triggers a thought for me, Tritop are young, but they have a broad musical background behind them. They have listened a lot, but more importantly they have assimilated, I can even hear fragments of Echolyn here, maybe I am wrong, however they know the material historically really well. And we come to the album's finest track, the twenty-four-minute suite “The Sacred Law Of Retribution”, a true godsend for classic Prog fans. It opens with Gentle Giant-style vocal playing and I would also say rather Savatage style given the electric guitars. And then off in search of new sonic twists between solo relays and a lot of classicism as liked by Lucassen of Dutch Ayreon. I also emphasize the care for the arrangements that make listening an absolute pleasure.
I consider “Rise Of Kassandra” one of the best releases of the year, but not only for Italian Prog, but worldwide. The guys have ideas, passion, technique and class to spare, we'll hear more from them, I'm sure, even if doing Prog is not doing Trap and so consciously you remain in a limbo for fans...
