Esistono artisti che dedicano l’intera vita alla musica per puro spirito creativo, operando al di fuori dei circuiti puramente commerciali. Nell'era contemporanea questo fenomeno è sempre più marcato, ma ciò non sminuisce la qualità che certi autori sanno mettere in campo.
Davide Riccio, in arte DeaЯ, è un artista torinese che abbiamo imparato ad apprezzare attraverso numerosi lavori, tra i quali spicca l'imponente "Gli Altri" (2024), un'opera composta da ben tre CD. Difficile incasellarlo in un unico genere: la sua vena creativa, nata negli anni ’80, è mutata nel tempo attraversando mode e sonorità eterogenee. La carriera del polistrumentista e cantante è ricca di esperienze: dalle militanze in band come Canned Music, Bluest e Off Beat, a progetti collettivi come “Neumi”, fino alla realizzazione di "Flatland" per RAI 3. Riccio è inoltre un autore prolifico di poesie e libri, collaboratore giornalistico e speaker per Radio Banda Larga. Questa poliedricità si riflette oggi nel nuovo incontro con Mauro Sanna (MaaS), musicista, compositore e sperimentatore nel campo dell’Intelligenza Artificiale.
L’AI è da tempo al centro di accesi dibattiti musicali. Personalmente, ritengo che se adoperata con criterio e nei contesti tecnici appropriati, possa rivelarsi uno strumento prezioso. Al contrario, appare fredda se sfruttata per scimmiottare lo stile di artisti già noti. Questa premessa serve a chiarire la mia totale imparzialità: l’apporto tecnologico non inciderà sul mio giudizio dell'opera.
Il disco si apre con i suoni New Wave di “Capo Chimera”, che ci riporta immediatamente alle atmosfere anni ’80. L'elettronica cura ritmica e tessuti sonori su cui si innesta un cantato moderato ma deciso, caratterizzato da doppie vocalità. La melodia è immediata e facile da memorizzare, un aspetto su cui DeaЯ ha lavorato con costanza negli anni.
“Anche Io In Arcadia” introduce ambientazioni spaziali; un cantautorato ponderato e privo di fronzoli dove il ritornello si imprime con forza nella mente. Più solare “Valentina”, dedica femminile che richiama le sonorità di Aleco: qui l’uso delle coralità è fondamentale per la riuscita di un brano dal forte potenziale radiofonico. L’album si fa introspettivo con “Anima Nuda”, un pezzo dal procedere minimale che valorizza un testo curato e dettagliato. La scelta di un arrangiamento essenziale è funzionale a non sovrastare la comunicazione verbale, che qui riveste il ruolo primario.
Mentre “Weltschmerz” vira verso una disco-music anni ’80 contaminata dal Post-Punk, “Shigata Ga Nai” proietta l’ascoltatore in un lontano Oriente attraverso le liriche, mantenendo però un’impronta cantautorale prettamente italica. “Misantropia” alterna dinamiche dance a momenti più rilassati, mentre per ritrovare la chitarra bisogna attendere “Sindrome Della Pagina Bianca”, territorio in cui l’autore si muove con particolare disinvoltura; per chi scrive, questo è il vertice qualitativo del disco.
La conclusione è affidata a una suite di quasi sette minuti in cui l’elettronica fa da tappeto a un parlato focalizzato sulla salute del pianeta: dall’asteroide che causò l'estinzione dei dinosauri all’evoluzione di una specie che continua a divorare se stessa. Un testo colto e profondo che invito a scoprire integralmente.
In sintesi, questo è Davide Riccio: un cantautore senza freni inibitori che predilige la sostanza alla forma, offrendo un turbinio di parole che invitano alla riflessione. L’apporto dell’AI? Prendere o lasciare. MS

Davide Riccio, known artistically as DeaЯ, is a Turin-based artist whom we have come to appreciate through numerous works, most notably the massive "Gli Altri" (2024), an opus consisting of three CDs. It is difficult to pigeonhole him into a single genre: his creative streak, born in the 1980s, has evolved over time, traversing diverse trends and sounds. Riccio’s career is rich with experience: from playing in bands such as Canned Music, Bluest, and Off Beat, to collective projects like "Neumi," and the creation of "Flatland" for RAI 3. He is also a prolific author of poetry and books, a journalistic collaborator, and a broadcaster for Radio Banda Larga. The AI handles the rhythmic and electronic textures over which a moderate but decisive vocal is layered, characterized by dual harmonies. The melody is immediate and easy to memorize—an aspect DeaЯ has consistently refined over the years.
“Anche Io In Arcadia” introduces spacey atmospheres; a thoughtful, no-frills style of songwriting where the chorus leaves an indelible mark on the mind. The more upbeat “Valentina” is a tribute to a woman that recalls the sounds of Aleco: here, the use of vocal harmonies is fundamental to the success of a track with strong radio potential. The album turns introspective with “Anima Nuda,” a track with a minimalist pace that enhances the carefully crafted and detailed lyrics. The choice of an essential arrangement is functional, ensuring it doesn't overshadow the verbal communication, which takes center stage here.
While “Weltschmerz” veers toward 80s disco-music tinged with Post-Punk, “Shigata Ga Nai” catapults the listener to the Far East through its lyrics, while maintaining a quintessentially Italian songwriting imprint. “Misantropia” alternates dance dynamics with more relaxed moments, while to find a guitar, one must wait for “Sindrome Della Pagina Bianca,” territory where the author is particularly at home; for this writer, this is the album's qualitative peak.
The conclusion is entrusted to a movement of nearly seven minutes in which electronics serve as a backdrop to a narrative focused on the health of the planet: from the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs to the evolution of a species that continues to devour itself. A sophisticated and profound text that I invite you to discover in its entirety.
In summary, this is Davide Riccio: a songwriter without inhibitions who prioritizes substance over form, offering a whirlwind of words that invite reflection. The AI contribution? Take it or leave it. MS
