La scena italiana riguardante il Rock Progressive in questo periodo sta vivendo un momento prolifico e non soltanto riguardo al numero di uscite, anche per la qualità delle realizzazioni. Si sa che la musica vive di momenti fatti di alti e bassi, l’interesse su di un genere naviga come una nave sull’onda fra picchi e discese, comunque sia, l’importante è sempre tenere accesa la fiaccola dell’interesse. Il Rock Progressivo italiano, quello di stampo classico, è caparbio, avvinghiato a quelli che sono stati gli anni ruggenti, nel nostro caso i ’70. Nell’ormai lontano 1993 in trentino si forma una squadra di adulatori del genere, i Phaedra e lo fanno per suonare ciò che hanno amato del passato, il suono dei Genesis, Yes, ma anche artisti della scena anni ’80 come per esempio i Marillion, facendone cover. Dopo numerose date live, spettacoli e festival, i Phaedra sono pronti per scrivere materiale proprio. La formazione non è di certo usuale, arrivando persino a otto elementi con strumentazioni come due violini, flauto, tastiere, mandolino e altro ancora.
Tuttavia l’esordio discografico deve attendere a lungo, giungendo soltanto nel 2010 con la buona autoproduzione intitolata “Ptha“. La critica di settore apprezza, così nel 2013 è la volta di “Oltre La Tempesta” (Raffinerie Musicali). Segue un lungo periodo di silenzio da studio, e sappiamo bene che anche gli anni delle restrizioni, non è che abbiano aiutato le attività musicali.
Una volta perse le tracce, ecco la sorpresa nel 2024, il ritorno in pompa magna attraverso un disco che vuole essere un’opera Rock ispirata da un racconto del genere gotico, scritto da Claudio Bonvecchio, dal titolo “Il Prigioniero”. Il risultato è “Norn” che fa riferimento alle tre divinità della mitologia norrena, addette ai destini dell'umanità. La band è oggi composta di sei elementi, Claudio Bonvecchio (basso, chitarra 12 corde), Stefano Gasperetti (tastiere, chitarre acustiche e classiche, violoncello), Matteo Lorenzi (voce solista), Gabriele Girardi (chitarra elettrica), Cristiano Conte (batteria e percussioni), e Catia Borgogno (voce solista e canto lirico).
Come lo stile Prog Rock insegna, i brani contenuti nell’album sono di lunga durata, compresa una suite di ventitré minuti, per un totale di cinque pezzi e un’ora di musica.
Il sound spesso pastorale è parte integrante del DNA della formazione, comprese le vocalità liriche femminili, apprezzabili sin dall’iniziale “La Selva Degli Ombrosi Faggi”. Le tastiere di Gasperetti aprono a scenari vintage in quel territorio lagunare patria delle Orme. I violini e il violoncello apportano profondità al movimento molto ricco di cambi di tempo. Le scure atmosfere, solo a sprazzi, lasciano spazio a raggi di luce come sapeva fare negli anni ’70 la band Quella Vecchia Locanda. Ma i nomi che potrei fare per darvi punti di riferimento potrebbero essere moltissimi, Osanna, Biglietto Per L’Inferno, Opus Avantra etc. ma non vorrei sminuire il carattere dei Phaedra che comunque sia, hanno uno stile ben riconoscibile.
Il flauto dolce inizia “Canto Per Lucy”, composizione bucolica per intento immaginifico, dove non si astengono neppure degli scampoli di Jazz. Eppure come nel brano precedente, anche qui intercetto melodie che sono state il successo dei nordici Anekdoten, assolutamente non copiate, anzi, probabilmente è solo una mia sensazione, ma la percepisco nei movimenti più scuri.
Mi sono poi accorto che ho passato molto tempo a occhi chiusi durante l’ascolto di “L’Empio Simulacro”, è la musica stessa che mi ha indotto alla concentrazione, impegnata questa volta a passeggiare nel terreno dei Gentle Giant.
Per proseguire con i punti di riferimento dico che la suite “Prigioniero Di Prisca Doglianza” si apre in Genesis style, che più Genesis non si può! Un lungo percorso che potrebbe essere un esempio di ciò che è il sunto della storia del Progressive Rock da far ascoltare a un neofito. Un brano semplicemente eccellente. La pastorale “La Radiante Foresta” suggella l’opera con classe e un pizzico di Orme.
Questo ritorno discografico mi ha dato molte soddisfazioni, tante emozioni, e questo è lo scopo della musica, i Phaedra ci sono riusciti attraverso la storia e la buona capacità compositiva. Se amate i gruppi che ho citato, non lasciatevi sfuggire “Norn”. Bentornati. MS

The Italian scene regarding Progressive Rock in this period is experiencing a prolific moment and not only regarding the number of releases, also for the quality of the achievements. It is known that music lives in moments made of ups and downs, the interest on a genre sails like a ship on the wave between peaks and troughs, however it may be, the important thing is always to keep the torch of interest lit. Italian Progressive Rock, the classic kind, is stubborn, clinging to what were the roaring years, in our case the 1970s. In the now distant 1993 in Trentino a team of adulators of the genre, Phaedra, is formed and they do it to play what they loved from the past, the sound of Genesis, Yes, but also artists from the 80s scene such as for example Marillion, doing covers of them. After numerous live dates, shows and festivals, Phaedra are ready to write their own material. The lineup is certainly not usual, even reaching eight elements with instrumentation such as two violins, flute, keyboards, mandolin and more.
However, the recording debut has to wait a long time, coming only in 2010 with the good self-production entitled “Ptha”. Industry critics appreciate, so in 2013 it was the turn of “Beyond The Storm” (Musical Refineries). A long period of studio silence followed, and we know that even the years of restrictions, it is not that they helped musical activities.
Once the tracks were lost, here's the surprise in 2024, the comeback with pomp and circumstance through an album intended to be a Rock opera inspired by a tale of the Gothic genre, written by Claudio Bonvecchio, entitled “Il Prigioniero”. The result is “Norn,” which refers to the three deities of Norse mythology who are in charge of humanity's destinies. The band now consists of six members, Claudio Bonvecchio (bass guitar, 12-string guitar), Stefano Gasperetti (keyboards, acoustic and classical guitars, cello), Matteo Lorenzi (lead vocals), Gabriele Girardi (electric guitar), Cristiano Conte (drums and percussion), and Catia Borgogno (lead vocals and opera singing).
As the Prog Rock style teaches, the songs on the album are long in duration, including a twenty-three-minute suite, for a total of five pieces and one hour of music.
The often pastoral sound is part of the lineup's DNA, including lyrical female vocals, appreciable from the opening “La Selva Degli Ombrosi Faggi”. Gasperetti's keyboards open to vintage scenery in that lagoon territory home of the Orme. Violins and cello bring depth to the movement that is very rich in tempo changes. The dark atmospheres, only in flashes, give way to rays of light as the band Quella Vecchia Locanda knew how to do in the 1970s. But the names I could name to give you points of reference could be many, Hosanna, Biglietto Per L'Inferno, Opus Avantra etc. but I would not want to detract from the character of Phaedra, which in any case, have a very recognizable style.
The recorder begins “Canto Per Lucy”, a bucolic composition by imaginative intent, where they do not refrain from even remnants of Jazz. Yet as in the previous track, here I intercept melodies that have been the success of the Nordic Anekdoten, absolutely not copied, in fact, it's probably just a feeling I have, but I sense it in the darker movements.
I then realized that I spent a lot of time with my eyes closed while listening to “The Unholy Simulacrum”, it is the music itself that induced me to concentration, committed this time to strolling through Gentle Giant's terrain.
To continue with the reference points I will say that the suite “Prisoner Of Prisque Wisdom” opens in Genesis style, which is as Genesis as you can get! A long track that could be an example of what is the summary of Progressive Rock history for a neophyte to listen to. A simply excellent track. The pastoral “The Radiant Forest” seals the work with class and a hint of Orme.
This discographic comeback gave me a lot of satisfaction, a lot of emotions, and that is the purpose of music, Phaedra succeeded through story and good songwriting. If you love the bands I mentioned, do not miss “Norn”. Welcome back. MS
