I molisani Ifsounds non si fermano più, hanno una vena creativa invidiabile e anche per loro la pandemia è stata un momento di ulteriore riflessione. “MMXX” è il nono album in studio ed è un lavoro concettuale, incentrato sui drammi della contemporaneità, proprio riferito alla pandemia e non soltanto.
Il gruppo del leader Dario Lastella (chitarra, basso, tastiere, synths e voce) formatosi a Petacciato nell’ormai lontano 1993 come IF poi solo successivamente Ifsounds, oggi è composto da Lino Mesina (batteria), Runal (voce), Italo Miscione (basso), Ilaria Carlucci (voce, cori) e appunto Dario Lastella. Finita la restrizione sociale sanitaria, c’è voglia di tornare a colloquiare e a relazionarsi nuovamente fra persone, una voglia di uscire allo scoperto che riporta al senso della vita, tutto questo è messo in note, le quali si distaccano leggermente da quelle passate relegate principalmente al Rock Progressivo, qui c’è uno sguardo anche al passato e a le coralità polifoniche, un lavoro ambizioso che si evince sin dalla suite iniziale “MMXX”. Sono proprio i cori ad aprire il disco, e bene sposano le immagini dell’album ad opera di Laura Meffe. I canti a cappella di stampo ecclesiastico lasciano spazio a sottofondi psichedelici sovrastati da un organo imponente. Il ritmo sale come nel brano “Nuvolari” di Lucio Dalla, e alterna situazioni ricercate a melodie di facile acquisizione oltre a riferimenti medievali. Non manca il mid tempo e richiami al Prog Italiano degli anni ’70, Orme, Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso e Goblin su tutti.
Per la riuscita della suite gli Ifsounds si avvalgono della collaborazione di Claudio Lapenna, Mariano Gramegna, Nadezhda Chalykh e Giovanni Liberatore alle voci. Le tastiere ricoprono il ruolo madre, serve attenzione all’ascolto per godere al meglio le sonorità. Buono l’assolo di chitarra e anche i piccoli innesti Jazz che a dire il vero non guastano mai in una suite.
Il secondo brano s’intitola “The Collector”, ha un ritmo sostenuto e semplice che potrebbe riportare agli anni ’80, mentre il cantato questa volta è in lingua inglese. Qui il Prog c’entra di schiaffo, piuttosto è una canzone pop, anche se possiede lunghe fasi di synth e l’immancabile cambio di tempo che rallenta la corsa.
Un passaggio nel mondo di David Bowie attraverso la simpatica “Stendhal Syndrome”, semplice, diretta e ruffiana al punto giusto nel ritornello. In “Kandinsky's Sky” ritorna Claudio Lapenna, questa volta al piano, una ballata delicata dal sentore Neo Prog.
La conclusione spetta a “MMXXII”, una mini suite di nove minuti abbondanti di musica diversificata, dove gli stili s’intrecciano fra di loro come corde di liane, vetrina per le qualità strumentali dei musicisti in questione. Un finale da applauso.
Gli Ifsounds ci hanno oramai abituati a belle realizzazioni, ma qui tentano qualcosa di più e di differente, quasi che il termine Progressive Rock va loro stretto. Non importa come classificare questa musica, resta il fatto che è ottima compagna di ascolti ripetuti, perché sono sicuro che quest’album girerà abbastanza spesso nel mio lettore, spero anche nel vostro. Molise's Ifsounds do not stop anymore, they have an enviable creative streak and even for them the pandemic was a moment of further reflection. "MMXX" is the ninth studio album and is a conceptual work, focused on the dramas of contemporaneity, precisely referring to the pandemic and beyond.
The group of leader Dario Lastella (guitar, bass, keyboards, synths and vocals) formed in Petacciato in the now distant 1993 as IF then only later Ifsounds, today is composed of Lino Mesina (drums), Runal (vocals), Italo Miscione (bass), Ilaria Carlucci (vocals, backing vocals) and precisely Dario Lastella. Finished the social health restriction, there is a desire to return to talk and relate again between people, a desire to come out of the closet that brings back to the meaning of life, all this is put into notes, which are slightly detached from those past relegated mainly to Progressive Rock, here there is also a look at the past and polyphonic choruses, an ambitious work that is evident since the opening suite "MMXX". It is the choruses that open the album, and they marry well with the album's imagery by Laura Meffe. Church-like a cappella chants give way to psychedelic undertones overlaid by a towering organ. The tempo picks up as in Lucio Dalla's "Nuvolari," and alternates between researched situations and easily acquired melodies as well as medieval references. There is no lack of mid tempo and references to 1970s Italian Prog, Orme, Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso and Goblin above all.
For the success of the suite, Ifsounds enlists the collaboration of Claudio Lapenna, Mariano Gramegna, Nadezhda Chalykh and Giovanni Liberatore on vocals. The keyboards fill the mother role; it takes careful listening to enjoy the sounds to the fullest. Good guitar solo and also the little Jazz grafts that actually never hurt in a suite.
The second track is titled "The Collector," has a sustained and simple rhythm that could take you back to the 1980s, while the singing this time is in English. Here Prog has slapdash to do with it, rather it is a pop song, although it possesses long synth phases and the ever-present tempo change that slows down the ride.
A passage into the world of David Bowie through the sympathetic "Stendhal Syndrome," simple, straightforward and pandering to the right point in the chorus. In "Kandinsky's Sky" Claudio Lapenna returns, this time on piano, a delicate ballad with a Neo Prog scent.
The conclusion belongs to "MMXXII," a nine-minute mini-suite of diverse music, where styles intertwine with each other like strings of lianas, a showcase for the instrumental qualities of the musicians in question. A finale to be applauded.
Ifsounds have by now accustomed us to fine accomplishments, but here they attempt something more and different, almost as if the term Progressive Rock is a narrow one for them. No matter how to classify this music, the fact remains that it is excellent companion for repeated listening, because I am sure that this album will spin quite often in my player, I hope in yours as well.
