L’uomo è fragile, su questo non corre nessun dubbio! Quando si hanno incertezze, si rischia di cadere nella depressione, di commettere errori, di non essere compresi. In tempi moderni tutto ciò accade molto più frequentemente oltre che velocemente, lo stress è alla portata quotidiana del nostro stile di vita. Ne siamo consapevoli, e qualche volta anche narratori, come nel caso del chitarrista, polistrumentista e compositore Marco Mattei. Autore nel 2021 dell’album “Out Of Control”, un diario su cui sono impresse le esperienze passate con alcune band e date live per il mondo, Mattei ritorna oggi con una consapevolezza acquisita nei confronti delle proprie capacità riversandole nel suo secondo album intitolato proprio “Age Of Fragility”. I testi affrontano il concept esplorando gli stati d’animo, mentre la musica (prettamente concepita al pianoforte e tastiere) miscela semplicità e complessità in un equilibrio coinvolgente.
A differenza di “Out Of Control”, qui lo stile volge lo sguardo verso la World Music e l’Art Rock, miscelando suoni cari ad artisti come King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Radiohead e altri ancora. Per raggiungere questo scopo, Mattei si coadiuva di nomi del settore di livello mondiale come Tony Levin (contrabbasso, basso), Jerry Marotta (batteria, percussioni), Trey Gunn (warr guitar), Jennifer Maidman (voce), Duilio Galioto (tastiere), Dave Bond, Fabio Trentini, Malena Ramonet, Tino Boley, Jeff Kightly, Joe Edelmann (voce), Peter Voronov (violino), Marìa Betania Hernàndez (violino, violoncello, viola), Michele Boni (Cavaquinho), e Kartin Romanova (arpa). Una squadra che di certo molti amanti delle band citate avranno accolto con grande piacere. Registrato ai Dreamland Studios di Woodstock (NY) nel giugno del 2024 con l’ingegnere del suono Ariel Shafir, “Age Of Fragility” si presenta con un artwork per mano di Bernhard Wösteinrich (con la versione italiana di OndemediE), rappresentante un messaggio visivo alquanto eloquente e intuitivo. All’interno del libretto oltre ai crediti si possono leggere i penetranti testi.
Ciò che s’intuisce all’ascolto è un’intesa ragguardevole fra i musicisti chiamati in causa, questo è dovuto al fatto che a differenza dell’album d’esordio, “Age Of Fragility” è registrato dal vivo, apportando quindi maggiore interazione e divertimento fra i componenti.
Lo stile inconfondibile di Peter Gabriel fa presenza nella voce di Dave Bond in “Just Tired”, una soffice composizione in cui l’incertezza e l’isolamento sono malinconicamente descritti. La canzone bada al sodo, senza inutili orpelli, fra atmosfere eteree e World. Più Rock la successiva “You Don’t Deserve It”, testimone di un’impossibilità di essere felici. La ritmica è ben articolata per lo scopo, così le fasi elettriche in crescendo donano intensità al concetto. Da sottolineare la buona prova vocale di Fabio Trentini.
Suoni Porcupine Tree basati su eco di piano iniziano “Human Again” cantata dalla soave voce di Malena Ramonet, una porta aperta alla positività. Anche la chitarra di Mattei richiama quella di Steven Wilson, e tutto avvolge l’ascolto con delicatezza.
In “Wrong” Tino Boley canta con intensità l’amore che spesso ci complica la vita, mentre in questo caso la musica si approccia al cantautorato americano, sempre restando in un profilo delicato, senza mai alzare troppo la voce.
Ed ecco giungere a questo punto il war guitar di Trey Gunn a impreziosire le atmosfere sognanti di “Insomnia”, accompagnate dalla voce di Jennifer Maidman. Jeff Kightly canta in “A Trick Of The Mind”, raggiunta successivamente dal violino di Voronov, e siamo sempre in un contesto leggero, onirico, supportato a dovere dalle tastiere.
“Watermark In My Heart” fa capolino in territori Blackfield (Steven Wilson, Aviv Geffen) anche per l’uso della voce di Joe Edelmann, questo è uno dei movimenti più toccanti dell’intero album.
Un grido alla ribellione psicologica, uno sprono per reagire a quanto ci accade giunge in “So Fragile”, nomen omen. L’album ufficiale si conclude con “End Of The Line”, brano splendidamente arrangiato con arpa e Cavaquinho che vede il ritorno al microfono di Fabio Trentini.
A questo punto sopraggiunge la lunga versione di oltre undici minuti di “Just Tired”, una chiusura del cerchio che mette in evidenza la cura e la capacità compositiva di Mattei.
“Age Of Fragility” è un disco che ci isola in una intimità agognata, quella di cui abbiamo bisogno per staccare la spina e riflettere… Ne è essenziale colonna sonora. MS

Man is fragile—there’s no doubt about that. When plagued by uncertainty, one risks falling into depression, making mistakes, or feeling misunderstood. In modern times, this happens far more frequently—and more rapidly—as stress has become a daily part of our lifestyle. We are aware of it, and sometimes even storytellers of it, as in the case of guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer Marco Mattei.
After his 2021 album “Out Of Control”, a musical diary reflecting past experiences with various bands and live performances around the world, Mattei returns with a newfound awareness of his own abilities, pouring them into his second album, aptly titled Age Of Fragility. The lyrics delve into emotional states, while the music—mostly conceived on piano and keyboards—blends simplicity and complexity in an engaging balance.
Unlike “Out Of Control”, this time the style leans toward World Music and Art Rock, combining sounds reminiscent of artists like King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Radiohead, and others. To achieve this, Mattei is joined by a world-class lineup including Tony Levin (upright bass, bass), Jerry Marotta (drums, percussion), Trey Gunn (Warr guitar), Jennifer Maidman (vocals), Duilio Galioto (keyboards), Dave Bond, Fabio Trentini, Malena Ramonet, Tino Boley, Jeff Kightly, Joe Edelmann (vocals), Peter Voronov (violin), Marìa Betania Hernàndez (violin, cello, viola), Michele Boni (Cavaquinho), and Kartin Romanova (harp). A team that fans of the aforementioned bands will certainly welcome with enthusiasm.
Recorded at Dreamland Studios in Woodstock, NY, in June 2024 with sound engineer Ariel Shafir, Age Of Fragility features artwork by Bernhard Wösteinrich (with an Italian version by OndemediE), conveying a clear and intuitive visual message. Inside the booklet, in addition to credits, one can find the deeply meaningful lyrics.
What becomes evident while listening is the remarkable synergy among the musicians involved. Unlike the debut album, “Age Of Fragility” was recorded live, resulting in greater interaction and enjoyment among the performers.
Peter Gabriel’s unmistakable influence can be heard in Dave Bond’s vocals on “Just Tired,” a gentle track portraying uncertainty and isolation with melancholic grace. The song gets straight to the point, avoiding unnecessary embellishments, with ethereal and World Music textures.
More Rock-oriented is the following track, “You Don’t Deserve It,” reflecting the inability to find happiness. The rhythm is finely crafted to serve the theme, with escalating electric sections that intensify the message. Fabio Trentini’s vocal performance is especially noteworthy.
Porcupine Tree-like piano echoes open “Human Again,” sung by the graceful voice of Malena Ramonet—a door to positivity. Mattei’s guitar even calls to mind Steven Wilson’s, wrapping the listener in delicate soundscapes.
On “Wrong,” Tino Boley sings with passion about how love often complicates our lives, with music that leans toward American singer-songwriter style while maintaining a gentle tone, never raising its voice too much.
Then comes Trey Gunn’s Warr guitar, enriching the dreamlike atmosphere of “Insomnia,” accompanied by Jennifer Maidman’s vocals. Jeff Kightly takes the mic on “A Trick Of The Mind,” later joined by Voronov’s violin. The setting remains light and dreamy, with keyboards offering solid support.
“Watermark In My Heart” enters Blackfield territory (Steven Wilson, Aviv Geffen), enhanced by Joe Edelmann’s vocals. This is one of the album’s most touching moments.
A cry for psychological rebellion, a call to react to what happens to us, arrives with “So Fragile”—nomen omen. The official album ends with “End Of The Line,” a beautifully arranged piece featuring harp and Cavaquinho, with Fabio Trentini returning to vocals.
At this point, an extended version of “Just Tired,” lasting over eleven minutes, closes the circle, highlighting Mattei’s meticulous craftsmanship and compositional talent.
“Age Of Fragility” is an album that immerses us in a longed-for intimacy—the kind we need to disconnect and reflect... It is its essential soundtrack. MS
