Nel panorama del Rock Progressivo Italiano abbiamo potuto ascoltare negli anni ’70 tanta musica fatta con notevole personalità. Tralasciando i soliti noti, si è potuto apprezzare un sottobosco di band meno fortunate per quello che concerne la distribuzione discografica, le cosiddette band da un disco e via. Non che siano stati lavori “minori”, anche se furono quella volta etichettate proprio con quel termine che mai ha rappresentato a pieno il valore delle loro opere. Le influenze che le hanno contraddistinte provenivano generalmente da quel calderone anglo/americano che ha fatto la storia del genere. Tuttavia le capacità miste alla mediterraneità dei nostri suoni, hanno prodotto album dal fascino caratteristico.
Una formazione punto di diamante della cosiddetta scena proviene da Milano e si chiama Alphataurus, autrice nel 1973 di quel capolavoro omonimo che ha soddisfatto molto pubblico del settore, grazie anche a una copertina importante apribile in tre parti.
Dopo un lungo silenzio, ritornano nel 2012 con l’altrettanto interessante “AttoSecondo” (2012) al quale è seguito “Live in Bloom”. Purtroppo negli anni a seguire gli Alphataurus vanno incontro a una serie di eventi nefasti, la dipartita dello storico chitarrista fondatore Guido Wassermann, nel 2022 è mancato il bassista Alfonso Oliva, e quest'anno il cantante Michele Bavaro. Proprio questo “2084 Viaggio Nel Nulla” è dedicato alla loro memoria.
L’album in pieno stile Alphataurus, riguarda un futuro distopico con riflessioni filosofiche ed esistenziali.  Anche in questo caso la copertina, come quella del 1973, è composta di tre ante ed è illustrata dal nuovo batterista del gruppo Diego Mariani. Con lui suonano Guido Wassermann: (chitarre, cori), Pietro Pellegrini (tastiere), Franco Giaffreda: voce, chitarre, flauto), Andrea Guizzetti (tastiere, cori), e Tony Alemanno (basso).
Sostanzioso anche il libretto che accompagna il cd con sedici pagine, mentre la versione del vinile ha all’interno un inserto 60x30cm.
I sei brani che compongono l’album sono quelli che ogni fans del genere vorrebbero ascoltare all’infinito. Di certo non mancano le capacità ai musicisti, specialmente quelle compositive, la palestra degli anni ’70 non è da tutti.
Sin dalle prime note di “Pista 6” si aprono scenari futuristici, ma quello che salta all’attenzione è il sound, debitore di quel suddetto periodo ma con aggiunta di sonorità moderne, le quali donano all’insieme un ulteriore fascino. Il pezzo è trascinante senza mai alzare troppo i toni.
“Viaggio Nel Nulla” ha la classica struttura della canzone con inframezzati passaggi Prog che impreziosiscono l’ascolto, questo equilibrio è una delle carte vincenti della musica Alphataurus.
“Flashback (Apocalisse)” è spietata nella visione delle cose, così la musica prende vigore per sottolinearne le tematiche. Scale sul pentagramma si alternano a cambi di tempo e a narrazioni apocalittiche proprio come suggerisce il sottotitolo. Se devo invece dare lo scettro al brano più Prog Rock dell’album, questo spetta ai dieci minuti di “Wormhole”, qui i musicisti si allontanano leggermente dalla suddetta formula canzone per intraprendere quei sentieri in cui l’arte si crea con la personalità. “Meta E Metà” è uno spiraglio di luce che attraversa quest’aurea pessimistica che avvolge il nostro futuro. Il disco si conclude con “E=mc2”, formula di Einstein che converte la massa in energia. Qui la musica acquista ampiezza nei suoni.
 “2084 Viaggio Nel Nulla” è un disco che si ascolta con piacere, fra passato e presente, tutto è al posto giusto, curato e bene eseguito. I fans di un certo tipo di Prog saranno contenti, altri forse meno in quanto non riscontreranno ricerche particolari o evoluzioni sul genere. Ognuno ha i propri gusti, si sa, ma gli Alphataurus di questo non si curano e proseguono il proprio onorevole cammino. MS

In the panorama of Italian Progressive Rock we could hear in the 1970s a lot of music made with remarkable personality. Leaving aside the usual well-known ones, we could appreciate an undergrowth of bands less fortunate in terms of record distribution, the so-called one-disc bands. Not that they were “minor” works, although they were that time labeled with that very term that never fully represented the value of their works. The influences that marked them generally came from that Anglo/American cauldron that made the history of the genre. However, the skills mixed with the Mediterranean-ness of our sounds produced albums with characteristic charm.
A diamond point formation of the so-called scene comes from Milan and is called Alphataurus, author in 1973 of that eponymous masterpiece that pleased much of the industry audience, thanks also to an important three-part opening cover.
After a long silence, they returned in 2012 with the equally interesting “AttoSecondo” (2012) which was followed by “Live in Bloom”. Unfortunately, in the years to follow Alphataurus go through a series of nefarious events, the departure of the historic founding guitarist Guido Wassermann, in 2022 bassist Alfonso Oliva passed away, and this year vocalist Michele Bavaro. This very “2084 Viaggio Nel Nulla” is dedicated to their memory.
The album in full Alphataurus style, concerns a dystopian future with philosophical and existential reflections.  Again the cover, like the 1973 cover, consists of three leaves and is illustrated by the band's new drummer Diego Mariani. Playing with him are Guido Wassermann: (guitars, backing vocals), Pietro Pellegrini (keyboards), Franco Giaffreda: vocals, guitars, flute), Andrea Guizzetti (keyboards, backing vocals), and Tony Alemanno (bass).
Also substantial is the booklet accompanying the CD with sixteen pages, while the vinyl version has a 60x30cm insert inside.
The six tracks that make up the album are ones that every fan of the genre would like to listen to over and over again. There is certainly no shortage of skills for the musicians, especially compositional ones; the gymnasium of the 1970s is not for everyone.
From the very first notes of “Pista 6” futuristic scenarios open up, but what jumps out at you is the sound, indebted to that aforementioned period but with added modern sounds, which give the whole an additional charm. The piece is driving without ever raising the tone too much.
“Viaggio Nel Nulla” has the classic song structure with interspersed Prog passages that embellish the listening, this balance being one of the trump cards of Alphataurus music.
“Flashback (Apocalisse)” is ruthless in its view of things, so the music picks up steam to underscore its themes.
Scales on the stave alternate with tempo changes and apocalyptic narratives just as the subtitle suggests. On the other hand, if I have to give the scepter to the most Prog Rock track on the album, this belongs to the ten minutes of “Wormhole”, here the musicians depart slightly from the aforementioned song formula to take those paths where art is created with personality. “Meta e Metà” is a glimmer of light through this pessimistic aura that envelops our future. The album ends with “E=mc2”, Einstein's formula that converts mass into energy. Here the music acquires amplitude in sounds.
 “2084 Viaggio Nel Nulla” is a record that is a pleasure to listen to, between the past and the present, everything is in the right place, polished and well executed. Fans of a certain type of Prog will be pleased, others perhaps less so as they will not find any particular research or evolution on the genre. Everyone has their own tastes, you know, but Alphataurus does not care about that and continues on its honorable path. MS
