A distanza di dieci anni, fa ritorno il progetto del compositore milanese Umberto Pagnini intitolato Active Heed.  Con i precedenti album “Visions From Realities” (2013) e “Higher Dimensions” (2014), Pagnini si coadiuva di differenti special guest per la realizzazione, il modus operandi non muta neppure oggi, avvicinando l’approccio stilistico a quello di Lucassen degli olandesi Ayreon. Certamente sto parlando di due stili completamente differenti, tuttavia Pagnini rispetto ai dischi precedenti in “Alien Herds” si approccia maggiormente al Metal Progressive, anche se non in maniera esagerata.
Lo si capisce immediatamente dall’ascolto del primo brano “Insert Coin To Continue”, in cui anche nel cantato si ricercano vette elevate. A livello di chitarre distorte, quelle che preoccupano di più un fans del Prog puro, non siamo a livelli troppo invasivi, ma ci sono. Per fortuna loro, le tastiere fanno spesso comparsa e diventano a tratti protagoniste. Si denota quindi un distacco da quel Neo Prog inglese che aveva caratterizzato molti dei brani dei primi due album.
Le tematiche fantascientifiche proseguono in “Bar”, altro brano orecchiabile per melodie che conferma il cambio di stile. Resta, come nel passato, un cantato troppo presente, questo purtroppo toglie spazio alla musica, la quale resta relegata a mezzo di trasporto per il concetto da esprimere. Quindi, anche se presenti, gli assolo sono brevi, quelli che servirebbero a spezzare l’ascolto altrimenti soffocato. Nel caso di “Bar” posso dire che è un movimento abbastanza equilibrato. La strada del Neo Prog non è ovviamente del tutto abbandonata, ecco quindi “Joy Is Back” a sostegno, con il pianoforte e Clive Nolan a fare da faro.
Un arpeggio di chitarra inizia “The Hard Way”, bene arrangiata e molto Heavy, ottime anche le ritmiche. Puntate nell’A.O.R. rendono freschezza ai brani che, tengo nuovamente a sottolinearlo, godono tutti di buone melodie. Il discorso è valido anche per “CMaj9”.
Il ragionamento si estende a tutto l’album.
“Alien Herds” contiene belle canzoni, ma per chi segue questo genere, sono pregne di deja vu, come in un puzzle riassuntivo delle puntate precedenti.
Oggi per emergere seriamente in questo mondo sonoro, sempre più massacrato dalla crisi discografica, serve tanta personalità oltre al coraggio di osare. Chi si approccia per la prima volta al Metal Prog, troverà questo disco fantastico e le mie parole assurde, in tal caso consiglio loro di ripartire dai Queensryche, Rush, Dream Theater etc.
Consiglio altresì ad Active Heed di pensare un poco di più alla musica, questo mi permetto di dirlo dopo aver ascoltato nel tempo tre album che sono gradevoli ma asfissiati dalle parole. MS

Ten years later, the project of Milanese composer Umberto Pagnini entitled Active Heed makes a comeback.  With the previous albums “Visions From Realities” (2013) and “Higher Dimensions” (2014), Pagnini aided by different special guests for the realization, the modus operandi does not change today either, bringing the stylistic approach closer to that of Lucassen of Dutch Ayreon. Certainly I am talking about two completely different styles, however Pagnini compared to previous records in “Alien Herds” approaches Progressive Metal more, although not in an exaggerated way.
This is immediately apparent from listening to the first track “Insert Coin To Continue”, in which even in the vocals high peaks are sought. At the level of distorted guitars, the ones that worry a pure Prog fan the most, we are not at overly invasive levels, but they are there. Fortunately for them, keyboards make frequent appearances and become protagonists at times. One thus denotes a detachment from the English Neo Prog that had characterized many of the tracks on the first two albums.
The sci-fi themes continue in “Bar”, another catchy tune for melodies that confirms the change in style. There remains, as in the past, too much singing present, this unfortunately takes away from the music, which remains relegated to a means of transport for the concept to be expressed. Thus, although present, the solos are brief, those that would serve to break up the otherwise suffocated listening. In the case of “Bar” I can say that it is a fairly balanced movement. The Neo Prog road is obviously not entirely abandoned, so here is “Joy Is Back” in support, with piano and Clive Nolan serving as a beacon.
A guitar arpeggio starts “The Hard Way”, well arranged and very Heavy, excellent rhythms as well. Struts in the A.O.R. lend freshness to the songs which, I again want to stress, all enjoy good melodies. The argument also applies to “CMaj9”.
The reasoning extends to the whole album.
“Alien Herds” contains good songs, but for those who follow this genre, they are steeped in deja vu, as in a summary puzzle of previous installments.
Today to seriously emerge in this sonic world, increasingly slaughtered by the recording crisis, one needs a lot of personality as well as the courage to dare. Those who are approaching metal prog for the first time will find this record fantastic and my words absurd, in which case I advise them to start again with Queensryche, Rush, Dream Theater etc.
I also advise Active Heed to think a little more about the music, this I dare to say after listening over time to three albums that are enjoyable but asphyxiated by words. MS
