La band Apogee nel genere Neo Prog è considerata in Germania fra le più interessanti e non soltanto in questa terra, tutto questo è possibile grazie alle dodici realizzazioni in studio rilasciate dal 1995 a oggi. Il genere trattato da Arne Schäfer, polistrumentista e mente singola del progetto, ha navigato sempre attorno al Neo Prog post anni ’80, con annessi riferimenti al passato. Assieme a lui partecipa alla batteria l’amico Eberhard Graef. Amante dei cambi di tempo e delle lunghe composizioni, Schäfer presenta l’ultima fatica in studio intitolata “Through The Gate”, contenente sei canzoni. L’argomento trattato è uno dei più affascinanti per l’essere umano, l’infinito e oltre, come si può apprezzare nel bell’artwork realizzato dal tecnico della band Versus X Andreas Tofahrn.
Non mancano dunque delle suite che possono variare dai dodici ai sedici minuti, questa volta però non è soltanto il genere Neo Prog a essere trattato, le influenze provengono anche da band storiche come Jethro Tull, Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant, ELP, UK, e Rush, oltre ad innesti di musica classica, Folk Rock e Heavy Rock. Detto questo, è chiaro che durante l’ascolto non ci si può annoiare, l’amore di Schäfer per questa musica è totale, il divertimento con cui approccia al lavoro è chiaramente contagioso anche per l’ascoltatore, a iniziare dai quattordici minuti di “No One But Ourselves”.
“No One But Ourselves” getta la mia memoria nel mondo di “Subterranea” dei maestri IQ e qualcosa dei Pendragon (specialmente nel canto), un inizio sfavillante in cui il passato e il presente si battono il cinque. Sin da questa mini suite è chiaro l’intento degli Apogee di emozionare con melodie semplici spezzate da ottimi assolo strumentali per creare un sound corposo oltre che ben registrato. Il potere della musica è soprattutto quello di stagliare avanti a noi immagini grazie ai suoni filtrati dalla nostra fantasia, l’intento ben riesce in “Emotional Feedback”, dedicato soprattutto agli estimatori del Neo Prog anni ’80. La canzone più breve dell’album s’intitola “At The Crossroads”, cinque minuti melodici in cui le parti strumentali sono il punto cardine della composizione, qui fanno presenza anche gli anni ’70 a coronamento di un andamento basato sul gioco tastiere e chitarra elettrica. Un'altra suite di quindici minuti è la title track, una passeggiata nel pentagramma fra sentieri scoscesi e pianure rilassanti.
“Keep The Flame” ha sentori Prog Folk come certi Jethro Tull hanno raccontato nel tempo, ma sarebbe riduttivo convogliare il discorso in un unico senso, in quanto il pezzo si evolve in diversi stili durante il proseguimento. Da sottolineare un bellissimo assolo di chitarra.
La chiusura è affidata ai tredici minuti abbondanti di “The Turning Point”, e come si dice in genere, degno suggello per un finale da ricordare. Non so quanti di voi conoscono la band norvegese Fruitcake, tuttavia certe soluzioni, specialmente riguardanti le tastiere, a mio giudizio la richiamano fortemente.
“Through The Gate” è un album in cui risulta chiaro l’intento compositivo di Arne Schäfer nel dare a noi qualcosa in più rispetto alla musica del passato, pur rispettando il proprio stile oramai radicato nel tempo. Gli Apogee sono una certezza che non tradisce mai. Fidatevi. MS

The band Apogee in the Neo Prog genre is considered among the most interesting in Germany and not only in this land, all this is possible thanks to the twelve studio releases released from 1995 to the present. The genre handled by Arne Schäfer, multi-instrumentalist and single mind of the project, has always navigated around post-1980s Neo Prog, with attached references to the past. Joining him on drums is his friend Eberhard Graef. A lover of tempo changes and long compositions, Schäfer presents his latest studio effort entitled "Through The Gate," containing six songs. The subject matter is one of the most fascinating to human beings, infinity and beyond, as can be appreciated in the beautiful artwork created by Versus X band engineer Andreas Tofahrn.
So there is no shortage of suites that can range from twelve to sixteen minutes, this time, however, it is not only the Neo Prog genre that is covered, influences also come from historical bands such as Jethro Tull, Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant, ELP, UK, and Rush, as well as grafts of classical music, Folk Rock, and Heavy Rock.
That said, it is clear that while listening there is no getting bored, Schäfer's love for this music is total, the fun with which he approaches the work is clearly infectious to the listener as well, starting with the fourteen-minute "No One But Ourselves."
"No One But Ourselves" throws my memory into the world of IQ masters "Subterranea" and something of Pendragon (especially in the singing), a sparkling beginning in which the past and present high-five each other. Right from this mini-suite it is clear Apogee's intent to excite with simple melodies broken up by excellent instrumental solos to create a full-bodied as well as well recorded sound. The power of music is above all to silhouette images before us thanks to sounds filtered by our imagination, the intent succeeds well in "Emotional Feedback," dedicated especially to admirers of 80s Neo Prog. The shortest song on the album is titled "At The Crossroads," five melodic minutes in which the instrumental parts are the mainstay of the composition, here the 70s also make a presence to crown a prog based on keyboard and electric guitar interplay. Another fifteen-minute suite is the title track, a stroll through the pentagram between steep paths and relaxing plains.
"Keep The Flame" has hints of Prog Folk as certain Jethro Tull have told over time, but it would be reductive to channel it in one direction, as the piece evolves into different styles as it goes on. Of particular note is a beautiful guitar solo.
Closing is given to the thirteen-plus minutes of "The Turning Point," and as they usually say, worthy seal for a finale to remember. I do not know how many of you know the Norwegian band Fruitcake, however certain solutions, especially concerning the keyboards, in my opinion strongly recall it.
"Through The Gate" is an album in which Arne Schäfer's compositional intent is clear in giving us something more than the music of the past, while still respecting his own style now rooted in time. Apogee is a certainty that never betrays. Trust them. MS
