C’è modo e modo di approcciare alla musica.
I gusti personali sono inconfutabili, piuttosto potremmo approfondire l’argomento “qualità” per ore ed ore perché qualsiasi sia il genere musicale ascoltato, bisogna avere l’obbiettività e la cultura per entrarne nei contesti per poterlo giudicare. La musica non serve soltanto per distrarre, far ballare, o da sottofondo. Capisco bene che diventa anche irritante cercare di focalizzare uno stile in un determinato genere, ma per chi scrive recensioni questo è utile oltre che inevitabile a far comprendere al lettore (che non sta ascoltando), di cosa si tratta.
Ebbene, il Progressive Rock ci ha insegnato molte cose al riguardo, non a caso il pubblico che lo segue da sempre è altamente esigente e selettivo. Tutto questo per anticiparvi come ci si deve avvicinare alla musica dei francesi Yang.
Dopo lo scioglimento della storica band francese Philharmonie nel 1998, il chitarrista Frederic L'Epée si prende un periodo di riflessione per poi decidere di fondare un suo progetto, e questo avviene nel 2002 prendendo il nome di Yang. La band oggi è completata da Laurent James (chitarre, voce), Nico Gomez (basso, cori), Volodia Brice (batteria) e l’ospite Carla Kihlstedt alla voce. Il faro illuminante per lo stile proposto è Robert Fripp (King Crimson), e ecco i paletti di riferimento per poter comprendere al meglio questa fenomenale musica proposta: Fusion, Rock, Hard Rock, Progressive Rock, e Jazz!
Avete già intuito cosa vi dovete attendere da “Rejoice!”, quinto album in studio formato da ben tredici tracce. La fantasia compositiva è davvero sorprendente, come il gruppo ci ha abituato da anni, ma in questo nuovo lavoro muta l’approccio, se vogliamo, maggiormente orecchiabile e comunque saturo di mutazioni rispetto al passato. Preferisco questa volta non addentrarmi nel percorso brano per brano, questo lo lascio alla vostra curiosità, perché ci sono dentro tante di quelle sterzate che serve un pubblico davvero attento e competente per affrontare questo viaggio.
Immaginate di fondere i Gentle Giant con i King Crimson ed ecco “Step Inside”, oppure potete navigare nel Rock duro e di classe di “Concretion”. Potete perdervi anche nelle dolci arie di “La Quatrième Mort/La Vie Lumineuse” cantate da Carla Kihlstedt, o nelle elucubrazioni stilistiche di “Fire And Ashes”, ma direi che già basta così.
Attraverso “Rejoice!” ci s’imbatte nello stupore, una spolverata alla nostra volontà di ascoltare, magari in cuffia e a volume alto, per questo ringrazio di cuore la band che mi ha dato la possibilità di mettermi nuovamente alla prova, visto che negli ultimi tempi la cristallizzazione dei generi ha portato in me anche un calo d’interesse verso questo settore.
Non sono io che mi sono stancato di ascoltare la musica, ma è la musica di oggi a darmi poco pane per la mente, questo è ciò che ne traggo alla fine delle tredici tracce. Risorto. MS

There is a way and a way to approach music.
Personal tastes are irrefutable, rather we could delve into the topic “quality” for hours and hours because whatever genre of music you listen to, you have to have the objectivity and culture to get into the contexts to be able to judge it. Music is not just for distraction, dancing, or background. I fully understand that it also becomes irritating to try to focus a style in a particular genre, but for those who write reviews this is useful as well as inevitable to make the reader (who is not listening), understand what it is all about.
Well, Progressive Rock has taught us many things in this regard, and it is no coincidence that the audience that has always followed it is highly demanding and selective. All this is to anticipate how one should approach the music of French Yang.
After the disbandment of the historic French band Philharmonie in 1998, guitarist Frederic L'Epée took a period of reflection and then decided to found his own project, which he did in 2002 by taking the name Yang. The band today is completed by Laurent James (guitars, vocals), Nico Gomez (bass, backing vocals), Volodia Brice (drums) and guest Carla Kihlstedt on vocals. The illuminating beacon for the proposed style is Robert Fripp (King Crimson), and here are the reference stakes in order to best understand this phenomenal proposed music: Fusion, Rock, Hard Rock, Progressive Rock, and Jazz!
You have already guessed what you should expect from “Rejoice!”, a fifth studio album consisting of no less than thirteen tracks. The compositional imagination is truly amazing, as the band has accustomed us to for years, but in this new work the approach changes, if you will, more catchy and still saturated with mutations than in the past. I prefer this time not to go into the track-by-track path, this I leave to your curiosity, because there are so many of those swerves in it that it takes a really attentive and knowledgeable audience to go through this journey.
Imagine merging Gentle Giant with King Crimson and you have “Step Inside”, or you can navigate the classy hard rock of “Concretion”. You can also lose yourself in the sweet tunes of “La Quatrième Mort/La Vie Lumineuse” sung by Carla Kihlstedt, or in the stylistic lucubrations of “Fire And Ashes”, but I would say that's enough already.
Through “Rejoice!” we encounter astonishment, a dusting off of our willingness to listen, perhaps on headphones and loudly, for which I sincerely thank the band that has given me the opportunity to test myself again, since in recent times the crystallization of genres has also brought in me a waning of interest in this area.
It is not me who has grown tired of listening to music, but it is today's music that gives me little bread for thought, this is what I draw from it at the end of the thirteen tracks. Resurrected. MS
