Il genere Metal Progressive sta donando agli ascoltatori differenti soluzioni, non più soltanto relegate ai maestri Dream Theater o Queensryche, tanto per restare nel continente delle origini, bensì muta in differenti stili e forme. Ciò accade in tutto il mondo grazie alla contaminazione di generi apparentemente incongruenti, c’è chi osa di più e chi meno, tuttavia si denota una volontà di spostare le coordinate di questo DNA. Il discorso è valido anche per l’Italia, sempre attenta a ogni tipo di fenomeno, anche il più intricato.
Il caso dei Faro non esula da questo preambolo, pur avendo loro alle spalle due album apprezzati da critica e pubblico, il duo Rocco De Simone (voce, tastiere) e Angelo Troiano (chitarra, tastiere) aprono il proprio stile a nuove soluzioni. Questo è l’approccio giusto per entrare a pieno merito nel termine Metal Progressive, ossia cercare sempre qualcosa di differente, suonare ciò che si sente al momento e per il proprio piacere.
Il progetto nasce fra Chieti e Pescara nel 2007 da un’idea di De Simone, inizialmente trio, oggi lo troviamo in duo con la presenza di altrettanti special guest, Giacomo Pasquali (basso), e Andrea Giovannoli (batteria). “Nu-Man” è il titolo del nuovo album formato da ben quattordici canzoni, tutte della durata media di quattro minuti per oltre un’ora di musica. Il concetto approcciato per la stesura dei brani riguarda un viaggio nella nostra epoca in cui le incertezze e le speranze si alternano portando l’essere umano al centro della vita. Un nuovo essere ibrido e super tecnologico incapace di provare emozioni, ma perfetto sotto altri punti di vista. Così descrivono i Faro al riguardo: “L’Umanesimo lentamente lascia il posto al Transumanesimo. Siete pronti per entrare in una nuova epoca?”. Noi si, per questo facciamo partire la prima traccia intitolata “Isaac”. In essa si manifestano immediatamente le sonorità dure che lasciano spazio a elementi di quiete, come il Metal Prog insegna. Gli arrangiamenti elettronici donano all’insieme ampiezza sonora. Le atmosfere spaziano dal malinconico alla pacatezza, approfondite dallo stile canoro di De Simone, ponderato oltre che gotico nell’approccio, un esempio giunge da “Crystal Cage”. Immaginate i Depeche Mode fare Heavy Metal e otterrete “Paradox”, con qualche scheggia di Queensryche. I quasi tre minuti di “Inside” sono introspettivi oltre che curati nelle coralità vocali. Il disco scorre senza troppi momenti di stanca, la sezione ritmica apporta interessanti passaggi su cui soffermarsi, sempre precisi e mai banali.
“Cradle” ha la carta vincente nella strofa, sostenuta dalla scelta vocale, “Protective” invece osa di più con le armonie della chitarra mentre il doppio pedale fa comparsa al servizio della potenza. Altra prova della malleabilità della voce di De Simone proviene da “Knots”, canzone ricca di sfumature armoniche di facile presa emotiva. La dolcezza di “The Mirror” si affaccia nel sound più moderno del genere con eleganza per poi lasciare spazio a “Appearances”, canzone più vicina al significato del termine stesso. Lo stile Faro a questo punto è ben definito e personale. “Blow” è movimento lento nello spazio, mentre “Room 39”è ispirata da una bella donna di nome Virginia. ”Red Thread” non si discosta da quanto ascoltato in precedenza, così “Human”. Conclude “Touch” con classe.
Questo Progressive Metal non è del tutto scontato, pur non avendo all’interno passaggi complessi è una via di mezzo che probabilmente potrebbe avvicinare un nuovo pubblico a questo genere che prosegue il proprio cammino verso il futuro. MS

The Metal Progressive genre is giving listeners different solutions, no longer just relegated to the masters Dream Theater or Queensryche, just to stay on the continent of origins, but mutating into different styles and forms. This is happening all over the world thanks to the contamination of seemingly incongruent genres; there are those who dare more and those who less, nevertheless there is a willingness to shift the coordinates of this DNA. The argument also applies to Italy, which is always attentive to all kinds of phenomena, even the most intricate.
The case of Faro is not exempt from this preamble, although they have two critically and publicly appreciated albums behind them, the duo Rocco De Simone (vocals, keyboards) and Angelo Troiano (guitar, keyboards) open their style to new solutions. This is the right approach to enter fully into the term Metal Progressive, that is, always looking for something different, playing what you feel at the moment and for your own pleasure.
The project was born between Chieti and Pescara in 2007 from an idea of De Simone, initially a trio, today we find him as a duo with the presence of as many special guests, Giacomo Pasquali (bass), and Andrea Giovannoli (drums). “Nu-Man” is the title of the new album consisting of no less than fourteen songs, all with an average duration of four minutes for more than an hour of music. The concept approached for the writing of the songs concerns a journey through our era in which uncertainties and hopes alternate bringing the human being to the center of life. A new hybrid and super-technological being incapable of feeling emotions, but perfect in other respects. This is how Lighthouse describes it, “Humanism slowly gives way to Transhumanism. Are you ready to enter a new era”? We are, which is why we play the first track entitled “Isaac.” In it, the harsh sounds are immediately apparent, giving way to elements of stillness, as Metal Prog teaches. Electronic arrangements give the whole sound amplitude. Atmospheres range from melancholy to quiet, deepened by De Simone's singing style, thoughtful as well as gothic in approach, an example comes from “Crystal Cage”. Imagine Depeche Mode doing heavy metal and you get “Paradox”, with some splinters of Queensryche. The nearly three minutes of “Inside” are introspective as well as carefully crafted vocal choruses. The record flows without too many tired moments, the rhythm section bringing interesting passages to dwell on, always precise and never dull.
“Cradle” has the trump card in the verse, supported by the vocal choice, ‘Protective’, on the other hand, dares more with guitar harmonies while the double pedal makes an appearance in the service of power. More evidence of the malleability of De Simone's voice comes from “Knots”, a song rich in harmonic nuances of easy emotional grip. The sweetness of “The Mirror” enters the more modern sound of the genre with elegance and then gives way to “Appearances”, a song closer to the meaning of the term itself. Faro's style at this point is well defined and personal. “Blow” is slow movement in space, while ‘Room 39 ’is inspired by a beautiful woman named Virginia. “Red Thread” does not deviate from what has been heard before, so does ”Human”. “Touch” concludes with class.
This Progressive Metal is not entirely predictable, while not having complex passages within it is a middle ground that could probably bring a new audience closer to this genre as it continues its journey into the future. MS
