L’uomo attraverso le religioni ha trattato approfonditamente l’argomento su dove andrà la nostra anima dopo la morte terrena, generalmente secondo il comportamento in vita c’è chi lo colloca al paradiso, all’inferno, al purgatorio, alla destra di un Dio, etc. Il discorso è alquanto complesso, e se vogliamo anche un poco egoistico in quanto pochi invece, si chiedono dove eravamo prima di nascere, forse perché non ci interessa più in quanto passato. La risposta (fittizia) è generalmente relegata a un ipotetico limbo. Questo è circa l’argomento dell’ultimo album concept “Puer Aeternus” della oramai storica Prog band italiana Ancient Veil.
Alessandro Serri (voce, chitarra classica, acustica, 12 corde, elettrica, flauto traverso, armonica,
programmazione tastiere), Edmondo Romano (flauto dolce contralto – soprano – tenore - basso, sax soprano e sopranino, chalumeau, clarinetti, low whislte, voce), Fabio Serri (pianoforte, hammond e moog, voce), Massimo Palermo (basso), e Marco Fuliano (batteria), esclusi i due album live, giungono al quarto disco in studio. Per raccontare in musica e parole quest’odissea spirituale si coadiuvano di special guest anche importanti del calibro di Lino Vairetti (Osanna), Martin Grice (Delirium), Sophya Baccini, Tony Cicco (Formula Tre), Roberto Tiranti (New Trolls), Natalino Ricciardo (Paolo Conte), Simona Fasano, Elisa Marangon e molti altri ancora.
Il protagonista è Puer, un essere incorporeo senza definizione di età e sesso, ed è imprigionato in un apparente Eden. Un limbo eterno, piacevole, illuminato, sempre uguale e perfetto ma allo stesso tempo morto perché totalmente privo di crescita. Questa tematica arcaica viene trattata dalla band attraverso diciotto brani che come da loro stile, nella maggioranza dei casi, si presenta in sezione acustica. Un QR Code presente nel CD fornisce all’ascoltatore anche la traduzione in inglese dell’intera opera, e la possibilità di leggere il libretto italiano in formato word, con tanto di descrizioni brano per brano, per una migliore comprensione del concept.
Cotanta argomentazione necessita quindi di un’importante colonna sonora, già “L’Eterno Tempo” apre a suono pastorale di matrice Prog molto vicino al sound del Banco del Mutuo Soccorso. Narra il brano che il mito del Puer Aeternus nasce nelle “Metamorfosi” di Ovidio. Il Dio-fanciullo viene identificato nella divinità greca Dioniso e poi in Eros. Oggi il suo significato diviene immagine di eterno fanciullo.
Le parti con il flauto sono quelle che ho maggiormente apprezzato, come in “La Visione Della Parte Mancante”, un tuffo nel passato fra New Trolls e Le Orme. I brani più articolati e orchestrati sono “Nella Stanza L’Intera Storia Umana”, “La Comprensione Del Tempo” (con una buona vena Rock all’interno e ottime coralità), e “L’Ascesa Di Hermes Nel Dio Visibile” che da solo vale l’acquisto dell’album!
In “Puer Aeternus” degli Ancient Vail c’è tanta storia del Prog, anima e cultura, oltre che tecnica strumentale sopra la media dei prodotti odierni, un disco da godere in tutto e per tutto.
Bella anche la copertina tratta dall’opera in olio su tela intitolata proprio “Puer Aeternus“ di Francesca Ghizzardi (2015). Il disco è dedicato alla memoria di Vittorio De Scalzi (New Trolls). MS

Man through religions has dealt extensively with the topic of where our soul will go after earthly death, generally according to the behavior in life there are those who place it to heaven, hell, purgatory, the right hand of a God, etc. The discourse is quite complex, and if you will, also a little selfish in that few instead, ask where we were before we were born, perhaps because we no longer care about it as the past. The (fictitious) answer is generally relegated to a hypothetical limbo. This is about the subject of the latest concept album "Puer Aeternus" by the now historic Italian prog band Ancient Veil. keyboards programming), Edmondo Romano (alto - soprano - tenor - bass recorder, soprano and sopranino saxes, chalumeau, clarinets, low whislte, vocals), Fabio Serri (piano, hammond and moog, vocals), Massimo Palermo (bass), and Marco Fuliano (drums), excluding the two live albums, reach their fourth studio album. To narrate this spiritual odyssey in music and words, they are also assisted by special guests of the caliber of Lino Vairetti (Osanna), Martin Grice (Delirium), Sophya Baccini, Tony Cicco (Formula Tre), Roberto Tiranti (New Trolls), Natalino Ricciardo (Paolo Conte), Simona Fasano, Elisa Marangon, and many others.
The protagonist is Puer, an incorporeal being with no definition of age or gender, and he is imprisoned in an apparent Eden. An eternal, pleasant, enlightened limbo, always the same and perfect but at the same time dead because it is totally devoid of growth. This archaic theme is treated by the band through eighteen tracks that as per their style, in most cases, is presented in acoustic section. A QR Code on the CD also provides the listener with the English translation of the entire work, and the possibility of reading the Italian booklet in word format, complete with track-by-track descriptions, for a better understanding of the concept.
Cotanta argomentazione then needs an important soundtrack, already "L'Eterno Tempo" opens to pastoral sound of Prog matrix very close to the sound of Banco del Mutuo Soccorso. The song narrates that the myth of Puer Aeternus originates in Ovid's "Metamorphoses." The child-god is identified in the Greek deity Dionysus and then in Eros. Today its significate becomes the image of the eternal child.
The parts with the flute are the ones I enjoyed the most, as in "La Visione Della Parte Mancante," a dip into the past between New Trolls and Le Orme. The most articulate and orchestrated tracks are "In the Room The Entire Human Story," "The Understanding Of Time" (with a good Rock vein inside and excellent choruses), and "The Rise Of Hermes In The Visible God," which alone is worth the purchase of the album!
In Ancient Vail's "Puer Aeternus" there is so much Prog history, soul and culture, as well as above-average instrumental technique in today's products, an album to be enjoyed throughout.
Also beautiful is the cover artwork taken from the oil on canvas work entitled just "Puer Aeternus" by Francesca Ghizzardi (2015). The disc is dedicated to the memory of Vittorio De Scalzi (New Trolls). MS
