E’ oramai evidente a tutti che la scena del Rock Progressivo odierno, quella che io chiamo Post Prog Moderno, sta prendendo sempre più campo. Essa è generalmente formata da influenze anni ‘70 provenienti da gruppi iconici come Pink Floyd, Genesis, King Crimson, etc. miscelate con il sound moderno portato al successo da band come Porcupine Tree, Riverside e Opeth. Non a caso m’imbatto sempre più frequentemente in dischi come questo dei Genovesi Melting Clock, i quali si lasciano trasportare dalla passione per le buone melodie orecchiabili, ma anche dai passaggi strumentali relativamente vigorosi.
La band composta da Sandro Amadei (tastiere), Stefano Amadei (chitarre, bouzouki irlandese), Alessandro Bosca (basso), Simone Caffè (chitarre), Francesco Fiorito (batteria), e Emanuela Vedana (voce), vede sorgere le proprie origini nell’oramai lontano 2001, al Dipartimento di Fisica dell'Università di Genova con l’intento primordiale di suonare cover. I risultati non erano poi così soddisfacenti, tanto da far dire a Alessandro Bosca “Stiamo perdendo il ritmo, ci stiamo sciogliendo come gli orologi di Salvador Dalì”, da qui l’idea di chiamarsi proprio Melting Clock. Inevitabili nel tempo i cambi di line up, sino giungere al 2019 con sulle spalle una buona esperienza dettata da numerose prove e date live, così è la volta del primo album “Destinazioni” (Black Widow), il quale riceve buone recensioni nel web dagli addetti ai lavori.
“Altrove” è il secondo album del 2024, composto da sette tracce di media e lunga durata, come spesso il genere stesso richiede. E a proposito di arte pittorica, la copertina ha un fascino davvero intrigante, colori sul giallo e marrone infondono un velato senso di malinconia, ma è il rosso a colpire maggiormente, come fosse il vero protagonista. Questo è anche il sunto di questa musica, capace di aprire differenti porte nello stato d’animo di chi ascolta.
Sono i sei minuti di “Vernice” a dare un’indicazione sullo stile della band, con il cantato in italiano (questo in tutto l’album) di Vedana, voce pulita, semplice che non tenta mai il passo più lungo della gamba. Funzionale anche il gioco corale voce maschile/femminile. L’andamento si espande in una sorta di Folk antico che si amplifica strada facendo in un suono moderno su un ritornello facile da ricordare.
Seguono “Altrove Pt.1” e “Altrove Pt.2”, la prima è una ballata dolce come la copertina del disco e calda come il suono del basso di Bosca, la seconda è uno strumentale che mette in luce le qualità sia compositive che esecutive della band. Numerosi i richiami ai Genesis, specialmente negli arpeggi.
Il disco prosegue in crescendo con “Il Mondo Al Suo Risveglio”, così il suono che presenta un approccio chitarristico più elettrico in una staffetta fra schiaffo e bacio. Buoni gli assolo strumentali.
“Città Spenta” porge il fianco alla formula canzone soprattutto nel tratto acustico iniziale voce e chitarra.
“Tramonti Di Cenere” alza il ritmo, qui le emozioni si sviluppano maggiormente su differenti scale e soluzioni, uno dei momenti più Prog nel vero senso del termine. Ma la ciliegina sulla torta giunge dalla conclusiva “Endurance”, nove minuti di ottima musica frastagliata da effetti ventosi e parti strumentali in bilico fra passato e presente, questo soprattutto grazie alle chitarre elettriche.
In conclusione, “Altrove” è un disco che di certo non lascia l’amaro in bocca, e che tenta di entusiasmare su più fronti, a testimonianza di una crescita professionale oramai acquisita.
Musica per tutti i gusti, non solo per Prog fans. MS

It is now obvious to everyone that today's Progressive Rock scene, what I call Modern Post Prog, is gaining momentum. It generally consists of 1970s influences from iconic bands such as Pink Floyd, Genesis, King Crimson, etc. mixed with the modern sound brought to success by bands such as Porcupine Tree, Riverside and Opeth. It is no coincidence that I increasingly come across records like this one by Genovese band Melting Clock, who are carried away by their passion for good catchy melodies, but also relatively vigorous instrumental passages.
The band, composed of Sandro Amadei (keyboards), Stefano Amadei (guitars, Irish bouzouki), Alessandro Bosca (bass), Simone Caffè (guitars), Francesco Fiorito (drums), and Emanuela Vedana (vocals), sees its origins rise in the now distant 2001, at the Physics Department of the University of Genoa with the primordial intent of playing covers. The results were not so satisfactory, so much so that Alessandro Bosca said, “We are losing the rhythm, we are melting like Salvador Dali's clocks”, hence the idea of calling themselves Melting Clock precisely.
Inevitable over time the line up changes, until arriving in 2019 with on their shoulders a good experience dictated by numerous rehearsals and live dates, so it is the turn of the first album “Destinazioni” (Black Widow), which receives good reviews on the web from insiders.
“Altrove” is the second album from 2024, consisting of seven tracks of medium to long duration, as the genre itself often requires. And speaking of pictorial art, the cover has a truly intriguing charm, colors on yellow and brown instill a veiled sense of melancholy, but it is the red that strikes the most, as if it were the real protagonist. This is also the summary of this music, capable of opening different doors in the listener's state of mind.
It is the six minutes of “Vernice” that give an indication of the band's style, with Vedana's singing in Italian (this throughout the album), a clean, simple voice that never tries to get ahead of itself. The male/female vocal choral interplay is also functional. The trend expands into a kind of ancient Folk that amplifies as it goes along into a modern sound over an easy-to-remember refrain.
This is followed by “Altrove Pt.1” and “Altrove Pt.2,” the former a ballad as sweet as the album cover and as warm as Bosca's bass sound, the latter an instrumental that showcases both the compositional and performance qualities of the band. There are numerous references to Genesis, especially in the arpeggios.
The album continues on a crescendo with “Il Mondo Al Suo Risveglio”, so the sound that features a more electric guitar approach in a relay between slap and kiss. Good instrumental solos.
“Città Spenta” lays side by side with the song formula especially in the initial acoustic vocal and guitar section.
“Tramonti Di Cenere” ups the tempo, here the emotions develop more on different scales and solutions, one of the most Prog moments in the true sense of the word. But the icing on the cake comes from the concluding “Endurance”, nine minutes of excellent music jagged with windy effects and instrumental parts poised between past and present, this mainly thanks to the electric guitars.
In conclusion, “Altrove” is an album that certainly does not leave a bitter taste in the mouth, and one that attempts to excite on several fronts, a testament to a professional growth that has now been acquired.
