Il Cile ha una punta di diamante nel genere Neo Prog, e si chiama Aisles.
La band apprezzata in tutto il globo, ha recentemente vissuto una vicissitudine d’eventi sfavorevoli che l’ha portata quasi allo scioglimento. Per fortuna ciò non è accaduto, ma il fatto ha lasciato segni nella line up, i chitarristi fondatori Germán Vergara e Rodrigo Sepúlveda sono restati, così come il batterista Felipe Candia, tuttavia si riscontra il ritorno al basso di Daniel Concha e del tastierista Juan Pablo Gaete. Ma la vera novità giunge dal cantante Israel Gil, chiamato a sostituire Sebastién Vargara. Lontano oramai il 2016, quando gli Aisles danno alla luce l’album “Hawaii”, quarto capitolo della discografia, il periodo Covid ha poi reso tutto ancora più complicato, ci pensa la perseveranza a far sì che la band ritrovi lo spirito giusto per proseguire la propria ottima carriera.
Eccoli quindi oggi con il nuovo “Beyond Drama”, intriso di Neo Prog, ma con sorprese all’interno. Ciò che si evince immediatamente all’ascolto della movimentata “Fast” è la voglia di cambiare aria, uno stile fresco quasi vicino al mondo dei Motorpsycho. Non nascondo quindi una nota di sorpresa che è confermata dall’ascolto di “Megalomania”, ancora più vicina al Post Prog Moderno come per esempio sono stati capaci di fare i Leprous. Che sia questo il motivo principale di tanto terremoto nella line up? Non biasimo la band che comunque intelligentemente vuole restare in riga con i tempi, inutile insistere su sonorità passate se si ha voglia di emergere, ma soprattutto se ha l’esigenza di esprimere un qualcosa di differente. Spicca la buona prova vocale di Gil che giustamente canta a suo modo senza fare il verso a Vargara. La trasformazione prosegue in “Thanks To Kafka”, dove non molto distanti sono i suoni di certi Porcupine Tree o Blackfield, soprattutto nel cantato vicino a quello di Aviv Geffen. Questa è una sorta di ballata impreziosita da interventi di elettronica e una ritmica curata. Fra le migliori composizioni dell’album riscontro la potente “Disobedience”, King Crimson in cattedra ma anche ricerca personale, il sentiero giusto cui facevo cenno in precedenza, dove la voglia di esprimere nuove sonorità è palesemente insistente. Si tira un attimo di sospiro dopo tante note con la leggiadra “Time (A Conversation With My Therapist)”, una delle migliori canzoni dell’album.
Gli Aisles comunque non hanno rinnegato nulla del passato e “The Plauge” è lì a dimostrarlo, fornendo un Neo Prog chitarristico impreziosito dalla voce dell’ospite Marco Glühmann, non a caso molte sonorità vanno a richiamare quelle della sua band Sylvan.
Un delicato pianoforte fa da preludio a “Surrender”, altro passaggio vicino alla ballata, collegata al brano giunge “Needsun”, sfumata all’inizio come se fosse un proseguimento di un brano passato. Qui ancora una volta la ritmica gioca un ruolo importante.
Il disco si conclude in Arena style con “Game Over”, questo grazie all’utilizzo della chitarra elettrica come John Mitchell sa fare.
“Beyond Drama” è a mio modo di vedere, uno dei dischi più interessanti di questo 2023, nonostante i suoi nuovi andamenti e sviluppi, probabilmente proprio quelli riescono a farmelo apprezzare maggiormente. Da ascoltare per credere. MS

Chile has a spearhead in the Neo Prog genre, and its name is Aisles.
The band appreciated all over the globe, recently experienced a vicissitude of unfavorable events that almost led them to disband. Fortunately, this did not happen, but the fact has left marks in the line up; founding guitarists Germán Vergara and Rodrigo Sepúlveda remain, as does drummer Felipe Candia, however, there is the return of Daniel Concha on bass and keyboardist Juan Pablo Gaete. But the real news comes from singer Israel Gil, called in to replace Sebastién Vargara. Far away by now is 2016, when the Aisles give birth to the album "Hawaii," the fourth chapter of the discography, the Covid period then made everything even more complicated, it takes perseverance to make the band find the right spirit to continue their excellent career.
So here they are today with the new "Beyond Drama," steeped in Neo Prog, but with surprises inside. What is immediately apparent when listening to the lively "Fast" is the desire for a change of air, a fresh style almost close to the world of Motorpsycho.
So I do not hide a note of surprise that is confirmed by listening to "Megalomania," even closer to Modern Post Prog as for example Leprous were able to do. Could this be the main reason for so much earthquake in the line up? I do not blame the band that however intelligently wants to stay in line with the times, useless to insist on past sounds if one has the desire to emerge, but especially if one has the need to express something different. Gil's good vocal evidence stands out, and he rightly sings in his own way without belting out Vargara. The transformation continues in "Thanks To Kafka," where the sounds of certain Porcupine Tree or Blackfield are not far behind, especially in the singing close to that of Aviv Geffen. This is a kind of ballad embellished with electronic interventions and a curated rhythm. Among the best compositions on the album I find the powerful "Disobedience," King Crimson in the cathedra but also personal research, the right path I mentioned earlier, where the desire to express new sounds is blatantly insistent.
One breathes a sigh after so many notes with the graceful "Time (A Conversation With My Therapist)," one of the best songs on the album.
The Aisles however have not disavowed anything from the past and "The Plauge" is there to prove it, providing a guitar-driven Neo Prog enhanced by guest Marco Glühmann's vocals, not surprisingly many sounds echo those of his band Sylvan.
A delicate piano serves as a prelude to "Surrender," another passage close to a ballad, connected to the track comes "Needsun," faded in at the beginning as if it were a continuation of a past track. Here once again the rhythm plays an important role.
The record ends in Arena style with "Game Over," this thanks to the use of electric guitar as John Mitchell knows how to do.
"Beyond Drama" is to my way of thinking, one of the most interesting records of this 2023, despite its new trends and developments, probably those very ones manage to make me appreciate it the most. To be heard to be believed. MS
