Sicuramente il logo Vlyes non vi dirà molto, anche se i più ferrati di voi avranno notato quasi un anagramma in queste parole che conduce al nome di Sylvan, la famosa Prog band tedesca dedita a un Neo Prog sia tecnico sia melodico. Infatti, questo nuovo progetto è per opera del chitarrista Kay Soehl che ha militato proprio nel gruppo nel periodo che va dal 1991 al 2007. Oggi, insieme a Jens Lueck (Single Celled Organism, Syrinx Call, Isgaard), si getta anima e corpo in un concept dalle influenze Pink Floyd, Arena, RPWL e Pendragon. Con loro il cantante Volker Oster, il bassista Jörg Linke e il chitarrista Jockel Lüdeke, questi ultimi due sono arruolati per le esibizioni live della band. Non mancano neppure gli special guests che in questo caso rispondono ai nomi di Isgaard alla voce, Katja Flinsch al violino, Annika Stolze al violoncello, Peter Mowka alla chitarra e Joerg Linke al basso. Il disco, come anticipato, è un concept che si pone delle domande su come sia potuto accadere che nell’era moderna ci siamo ridotti in questa maniera, fra inquinamento atmosferico e urbanistico.
“Why” si presenta in contenitore cartonato e un libretto ben curato nei particolari con foto, testi e quant’altro possa soddisfare le vostre curiosità sulla realizzazione. Dieci sono le canzoni che iniziano con un intro melodico tendente all’acustico intitolato “The Arrival”, dove lo scenario penoso in cui oggi riversiamo è avanti ai nostri occhi. Influenze Pink Floyd periodo “The Final Cut” sono evidenti nell’incedere. Aumenta il ritmo in “I Can’t Get Out” avvicinando il sound a quello dei Pendragon (anche per il cantato) e gli Arena di “The Visitor”. Il riff di chitarra è semplice ed efficace, così come buono risulta essere l’assolo. Ancora Pendragon in maniera marcata nel brano “I Need A Wise Friend”, fra i più introspettivi e toccanti dell’intero lavoro, con attimi strumentali eccellenti specialmente quelli della tastiera, esaltati da una buona incisione sonora effettuata agli Art Of Music Studio di Garlstorf. Attraverso “Once In A While” s’incontrano diversi tipi di sonorità, comprese quelle elettroniche a supporto di arrangiamenti ben eseguiti. Fra i pezzi più interessanti cito “The Petition” in quanto strumentalmente più impegnativo, e questo per un amante del Progressive Rock è un particolare non da poco.
Un arpeggio di chitarra apre “Calm Down”, Il Neo Prog post anni ’80 si palesa in tutta la sua struggente capacità di saper emozionare con fasi cantate al limite del recitato, proprio come ha saputo fare Fish con i suoi Marillion, ma soprattutto gli Arena di Clive Nolan e Mike Pointer. Non si resta indifferenti neppure in questo caso all’ascolto dell’assolo di chitarra. Si parla di quotidianità e sperimentazione per la sopravvivenza nei nove minuti di “The Abandon”, vetrina per le capacità balistiche della band e per la voce dell’ospite Isgaard. Un altro lento s’intitola “The End”, in questo caso la composizione si aggira intorno al pianoforte che spesso richiama alla mente passaggi in stile Savatage. Ci si avvia verso la conclusione con “Why”, minisuite di quasi undici minuti di grande musica adatta anche per i gusti degli amanti dei Mostly Autumn. L’album si conclude con un loop vocale che invoca una domanda: Perché?
Gran disco, per me una notevole sorpresa in quanto amante dei Sylvan non mi sarei atteso un sorpasso caratteriale da parte dei Vlyes, i quali ostinano esperienza e gusto per la melodia a profusione. Da avere, soprattutto se siete amanti dei gruppi sopra citati. MS

Surely the Vlyes logo won't tell you much, although the more fervent of you will have noticed almost an anagram in these words leading to the name Sylvan, the famous German Prog band devoted to both technical and melodic Neo Prog. In fact, this new project is by guitarist Kay Soehl, who played right in the band during the period from 1991 to 2007. Today, together with Jens Lueck (Single Celled Organism, Syrinx Call, Isgaard), he throws himself heart and soul into a concept with influences from Pink Floyd, Arena, RPWL and Pendragon. With them are vocalist Volker Oster, bassist Jörg Linke and guitarist Jockel Lüdeke, the latter two being enlisted for the band's live performances. There is no shortage of special guests either, who in this case answer to the names of Isgaard on vocals, Katja Flinsch on violin, Annika Stolze on cello, Peter Mowka on guitar, and Joerg Linke on bass. The record, as anticipated, is a concept that asks questions about how it could have happened that in the modern era we have been reduced to this state of affairs, between air and urban pollution.
"Why" comes in a hardback container and a well-detailed booklet with photos, lyrics and whatever else may satisfy your curiosity about the realization. There are ten songs that begin with a melodic intro tending toward the acoustic entitled "The Arrival", where the distressing scenario in which we pour today is before our eyes. Pink Floyd period influences "The Final Cut" are evident in the intro. It picks up the pace in "I Can't Get Out", bringing the sound closer to that of Pendragon (including the singing) and Arena from "The Visitor". The guitar riff is simple and effective, as good as the solo turns out to be. Pendragon again in a pronounced way in the song "I Need A Wise Friend", among the most introspective and touching of the entire work, with excellent instrumental moments especially those of the keyboard, enhanced by a good sound recording made at the Art Of Music Studio in Garlstorf. Through "Once In A While" one encounters different kinds of sounds, including electronic ones supporting well-executed arrangements. Among the most interesting pieces I mention "The Petition" as being instrumentally more challenging, and this for a Progressive Rock lover is no small detail.
A guitar arpeggio opens "Calm Down", Post-'80s Neo Prog is manifested in all its poignant ability to know how to emote with sung phases bordering on the recited, just as Fish was able to do with his Marillion, but especially Clive Nolan and Mike Pointer's Arena. One is not left unmoved even in this case when listening to the guitar solo. There is talk of everyday life and experimentation for survival in the nine-minute "The Abandon", a showcase for the band's ballistic abilities and guest vocals by Isgaard. Another slow one is titled "The End", in this case the composition revolves around piano that often brings to mind Savatage-style passages. We move toward the conclusion with "Why", a mini-suite of nearly eleven minutes of great music also suitable for the tastes of Mostly Autumn lovers. The album ends with a vocal loop that invokes a question: Why?
Great album, for me a remarkable surprise as a Sylvan lover I would not have expected a character overtaking by the Vlyes, who doggedly display experience and taste for melody in profusion. A must have, especially if you are a fan of the aforementioned bands. MS
