Certe band hanno un seguito che resta relegato a un pubblico di nicchia, espressione di un linguaggio non rivolto a tutti i tipi di ascoltatori. Con il gruppo inglese (Scarborough) The Danse Society per esempio si entra in un filone che di certo ha avuto proseliti soprattutto negli anni ’80, ossia un tipo di Rock gotico caro a band come The Cure, Siouxsie e Killing Joke. Musica immediata e d’impatto, tanto che per questo nuovo album (l’ottavo della loro lunga carriera) la registrazione è effettuata in presa diretta per risaltare maggiormente le capacità d’improvvisazione e sperimentazione, conferendo all’insieme un'aura di calore, umanità e realismo.
Ma i The Danse Society con l’album “The Loop” fanno ancora di più, entrano a pieno diritto anche nel mondo del Progressive Rock grazie a passaggi ricercati infarciti di strumentazioni non del tutto convenzionali al genere, come ad esempio le trombe.
Per chi non li conoscesse, i The Danse Society nascono nel 1980 con la formazione Steve Rawlings (voce), Paul Gilmartin (batteria), Lyndon Scarfe (tastiere), Paul Nash (chitarra), Tim Wright (basso). Nello stesso anno pubblicano il loro primo singolo, "Clock", e nel 1982 il loro album di debutto, “Seduction”, raggiungendo il podio dell’Indie Chart britannica. Il loro album più conosciuto, “Heaven is Waiting” (1983) ha raggiunto il n. 39 nella classifica degli album più venduti del Regno Unito.
Dopo diversi cambi di line-up, quella attuale è formata da Paul Nash (chitarre), Maethelyiah (voce), Jack Cooper (Basso), Dylan Riley (batteria) e Steve Dickinson (tastiere). I testi dell’album sono un ritratto della società odierna, in cui controllo, manipolazione e “divide et impera” ci rendono burattini addormentati.
L’iniziale “Divided To The End” introduce immediatamente l’ascoltatore in un mondo malinconico dalle sfumature gotiche, una profondità di carattere che travalica nel Progressive Rock per un connubio particolare. Maggiore oscurità su “The Lies” in cui la voce di Maethelyiah è degna interprete di queste sfaccettature, raggiungendo scale elevate soprattutto nelle coralità. Gli arrangiamenti sono notevoli, tanto da rendere l’ascolto impegnato, malgrado le melodie siano di facile assimilazione. Cambia l’umore nella danzereccia “The Sound And The Fury” e gli anni ’80 si rispolverano prepotentemente nella nostra memoria grazie all’uso della batteria e soprattutto della chitarra. La title track è aperta da un piano inizialmente disarmonico per poi entrare in binari ritmici lenti, se godete di fervida fantasia immaginate di ascoltare i Supertramp al rallentatore. Questo strumentale entra a pieno titolo nel mondo del Gothic Rock per l’uso degli archi e dei cori. “If You Were Only Listening” ha un intro psichedelico ammaliante, quasi ipnotico, come hanno saputo fare negli anni ’90 i Porcupine Tree. Maggiore ricerca strutturale nella ritmica per “Algorithm Control”, canzone che tuttavia resta meno complessa di quanto ascoltato sino ad ora e con un gradevole ritornello. Inizio cinematografico per “Shake Shake” dal profumo di Spaghetti Western, dopo questo tipo d’intro il pezzo si lancia nuovamente in una ballabile struttura ancora una volta tipicamente anni ’80. La conclusione aspetta a “Undone”, una piccola perla nera splendidamente interpretata.
Questo nuovo album dei The Danse Society avrete capito da quanto descritto, ha numerose sfaccettature, tutte da scoprire e riascoltare per coglierne i particolari, spesso sono quelli che fanno la differenza fra un disco e un bel disco. MS

Certain bands have a following that remains relegated to a niche audience, an expression of a language not aimed at all types of listeners. With the English band (Scarborough) The Danse Society for example, we enter a vein that certainly had proselytes especially in the 1980s, namely a type of Gothic Rock dear to bands like The Cure, Siouxsie and Killing Joke. Immediate and impactful music, so much so that for this new album (the eighth of their long career) the recording is done live to bring out more of their improvisational and experimental skills, giving the whole an aura of warmth, humanity and realism.
But The Danse Society with the album "The Loop" do even more, they also rightfully enter the world of Progressive Rock thanks to refined passages infused with instrumentation not entirely conventional to the genre, such as trumpets.
For those not familiar with them, The Danse Society was formed in 1980 as Steve Rawlings (vocals), Paul Gilmartin (drums), Lyndon Scarfe (keyboards), Paul Nash (guitar), and Tim Wright (bass). In the same year they released their first single, "Clock", and in 1982 their debut album, "Seduction", reaching the podium of the British Indie Chart.
Their best-known album, "Heaven is Waiting" (1983) reached No. 39 on the U.K. best-selling albums chart.
After several line-up changes, the current one consists of Paul Nash (guitars), Maethelyiah (vocals), Jack Cooper (bass), Dylan Riley (drums) and Steve Dickinson (keyboards). The album's lyrics are a portrait of today's society, in which control, manipulation and "divide and conquer" make us sleeping puppets.
The opening "Divided To The End" immediately introduces the listener to a melancholic world with gothic overtones, a depth of character that transcends into Progressive Rock for a peculiar combination. More darkness on "The Lies" in which Maethelyiah's voice is a worthy interpreter of these facets, reaching high scales especially in the choruses. The arrangements are remarkable, enough to make for engaged listening, despite the melodies being easy to assimilate. The mood changes in the dancey "The Sound And The Fury", and the 1980s come powerfully to the forefront of our memory through the use of drums and especially guitar.
The title track is opened by an initially inharmonious piano and then enters slow rhythmic tracks; if you enjoy a vivid imagination, imagine listening to Supertramp in slow motion. This instrumental fully enters the world of Gothic Rock for its use of strings and choruses. "If You Were Only Listening" has a haunting, almost hypnotic psychedelic intro, as Porcupine Tree was able to do in the 1990s. More structural research in the rhythm for "Algorithm Control", a song that nevertheless remains less complex than what we have heard so far and with a pleasant refrain. Cinematic beginning for "Shake Shake" with a Spaghetti Western scent, after this kind of intro the song launches again into a danceable structure once again typically 80s. The conclusion waits for "Undone", a beautifully interpreted little black gem.
This new album by The Danse Society you will have gathered from what has been described, has numerous facets, all to be discovered and listened to again to grasp the details, often these are the ones that make the difference between a record and a good one. MS
