Questa volta Nonsolo Progrock si occupa di una recensione particolare, dove la musica (qualunque essa sia) diventa una valvola di sfogo per il corpo e per l’anima. Chiaramente questo è un fattore comune per tutti gli artisti, ma ci sono casi in cui la passione diventa un vero scopo di vita.
Il caso di James Netterwald è emblematico. L’artista autodidatta è di Hazlet, NJ negli Stati Uniti. Da più di trent’anni scrive canzoni in modo davvero personale e le registra a casa, il tutto autofinanziandosi. Il Rock trattato spazia dagli anni ’60 ai ’90, sino a sfiorare il Grunge.
James nei testi tratta le problematiche che ha dovuto affrontare nella vita, soprattutto il bipolarismo che l’ha colpito, oltre citare hobby e interessi vari.
Ecco la musica come forma di terapia, la volontà di mettersi in gioco per le idee, la voglia di essere vivi, capiti e apprezzati.
“Decade Decoded” è il debutto ufficiale in cd ed è composto di otto canzoni.
“I Don't Even Wanna Know” è il singolo che apre il disco, molto orecchiabile per melodie. Essendo autodidatta, James si avvale del pc e quindi la ritmica risulta minimale, senza molti fronzoli. La chitarra elettrica è robusta e scarica energia al brano. Il suono non è curato per i limiti sopra citati, ma quello che conta è la sostanza, la voglia di uscire con un proprio concetto.
D’idee ce ne sono, come nella solare “1999 (defenseless)”, dove la voce viene filtrata da un vocoder. Di base si possono sentire i Beatles come riferimento, ma anche il sound più moderno di artisti come i Blackfield, “Another Gloomy Bayonne Day” ne è prova.
Netterwald mette se stesso nei brani e mostra anche una buona cultura sugli ascolti, un bagaglio storico messo in pratica nelle composizioni. Semplice e diretta “It Started Off With This Car”, peccato solo per il cantato non sempre all’altezza, ma nel complesso gradevole. Un velo di nostalgia aleggia nella dolce “Invisible To You”, canzone fra le più riuscite del disco con suoni di tastiera a simulare i fiati di una tromba, qui il Folk è più presente.
“Confusion” si apre con un suono di piano e una ritmica più impegnata, questa volta sono gli anni ’90 a fare capolino, quando gli Oasis hanno intrapreso sentieri calpestati dai Fab Four. Giocosa “Dear Therapist”, arricchita da coralità aggiunte oltre che dall’effetto voice decoded.
Di altra materia è composta “Seeds Of Self Doubt”, canzone decisamente matura e introspettiva, anche nel cantato, questa volta bene effettuato.
In chiusura un’armonica fa respirare atmosfere fra Folk e Southern Rock in “Voluntary Hostage”.
James Netterwald si è messo in gioco, senza se e senza ma, una passione che spero possa a lui portare benessere e soddisfazioni.
L’artista promuove la propria musica in modo indipendente presentando le sue canzoni alle stazioni radio universitarie di tutto il mondo e alle stazioni indipendenti come radiodowntown.ca. MS

This time Nonsolo Progrock deals with a particular review, where music (whatever it is) becomes an outlet for body and soul. Clearly this is a common factor for all artists, but there are cases where passion becomes a real life purpose.
The case of James Netterwald is emblematic. The self-taught artist is from Hazlet, NJ in the United States. For more than 30 years he has been writing songs in a truly personal way and recording them at home, all self-financed. The Rock covered ranges from the 60s to the 90s, even touching on Grunge.
James in the lyrics deals with the issues he has had to face in life, especially the bipolarism that affected him, as well as mentioning hobbies and various interests.
Here is music as a form of therapy, a willingness to put oneself out there for ideas, a desire to be alive, understood and appreciated.
"Decade Decoded" is the official CD debut and consists of eight songs.
"I Don't Even Wanna Know" is the single that opens the record, very catchy in melodies. Being self-taught, James makes use of the pc and so the rhythmic arrangement comes across as minimal, without many frills. The electric guitar is robust and drains energy to the track. The sound is not polished because of the limitations mentioned above, but what matters is the substance, the desire to come out with a concept of one's own.
Of ideas there are, as in the sunny "1999 (defenseless)", where the vocals are filtered by a vocoder. Basically one can hear the Beatles as a reference, but also the more modern sound of artists such as Blackfield, "Another Gloomy Bayonne Day" is proof.
Netterwald puts himself into the songs and also shows a good culture about listening, a historical background put into practice in the compositions. Simple and straightforward "It Started Off With This Car", a pity only for the singing that is not always up to par, but overall enjoyable. A veil of nostalgia hovers in the sweet "Invisible To You", one of the most successful songs on the disc with keyboard sounds simulating the horns of a trumpet, here the Folk is more present.
"Confusion" opens with a more committed piano sound and rhythm, this time it is the 1990s that peeps out, when Oasis took paths trodden by the Fab Four. Playful "Dear Therapist", enhanced by added chorality as well as the decoded voice effect.
Of a different matter is "Seeds Of Self Doubt", a decidedly mature and introspective song, even in the singing, this time well effected.
In closing a harmonica makes atmospheres between Folk and Southern Rock breathe in "Voluntary Hostage".
James Netterwald has put himself out there, no ifs or buts, a passion that I hope will bring him prosperity and satisfaction.
