Dopo il buon “Soldiers Of The New World Order” dell’anno 2020, ritorna il progetto Progressive Metal Geometry Of Chaos del polistrumentista Fabio La Manna. La band è formata da ciò che resta degli Alchemy Room con Davide Cardella alla batteria, e Charles Soulz alle tastiere. Nei cinque brani che compongono “Imaginary Friends”, vedono alternarsi al microfono special guest come Marcello Vieira, Ethan Cronin ed Elena Lippe, mentre nel brano “Lie Of Vampire” il sax è di Patricio Bottcher.
La descrizione di questo nuovo sforzo in studio è ben descritta nelle brevi linee riportate dall’artista nella bio d’accompagnamento: “L’album continua il percorso musicale iniziato con “Soldiers Of The New World Order”.
Stilisticamente raccoglie un insieme di molteplici influenze, dal Progressive Rock moderno e quello dei settanta, al Metal con i suoi sottogeneri, alla musica d’ispirazione più cinematografica, e varie influenze più propriamente Rock. Per quanto riguarda le tematiche dei testi, l’album è a tutti gli effetti un concept sul tema dell’aiuto, del sostegno, del bisogno di una mano da parte di terzi, in situazioni di particolare sconforto e difficoltà da parte del protagonista. I testi lasciano aperta una porta al “paranormale”, laddove ogni singolo testo può essere interpretato come dialogo, scambio, fra il protagonista e qualcosa di ultraterreno, appartenente ad altre dimensioni, o proveniente dalla sua stessa mente.”.
Con queste premesse, l’ascolto inizia con “Tulpa” attraverso un incedere corposamente oscuro e cadenzato. Sin dalle prime note si denotano tutte le caratteristiche del genere che piacciono agli estimatori, quelle rafforzate dal successo negli anni ’90 dai Dream Theater e successivamente sviluppato in altra materia dagli svedesi Opeth. E’escluso un uso rilevante delle tastiere qui poco presenti. Fa invece una breve comparsa lo stile growl.
Il brano più lungo dell’album ha la durata di quasi tredici minuti ed è proprio la title track, dove il gruppo manifesta il meglio delle proprie capacità esecutive, comprese quelle compositive di Fabio La Manna. Nella musica dei Geometry Of Chaos aleggia sempre un velo di oscurità, amplificata spesso nei passaggi Death. La ritmica cambia repentinamente e si dimostra una buona macchina da guerra perfettamente oliata. Ci sono quindi durante l’ascolto numerosi riff, un poco meno gli assolo che seppure brevi comunque dimostrano una buona preparazione tecnica specialmente da parte di La Manna. In questa mini suite, denoto nuovamente molti punti di congiunzione con gli Opeth, specialmente nei momenti più pacati.
Il discorso muta con “Distant Voice”, aperto dal piano rilassante di Soulz e una profonda voce narrante, quella di La Manna. La chitarra elettrica dipinge armonie delicate al limite dell’onirico, un gradevole momento di pausa che spezza intelligentemente tutto “Imaginary Friends”.
Gli undici minuti di “Lies Of Vampire” sono un esempio classico di come si dovrebbe esprimere il Progressive Metal fra buone melodie, tecnica e cambi umorali.
Il disco si chiude con la potenza di “Creatura”, un brano tagliente e carico di adrenalina, un abisso nell’oscurità.
I Geometry Of Chaos chiudono questo 2023 con un album emotivo ricco di sonorità, dimostrando una buona salute sia mentale che fisica, un buon esempio di Progressive Metal moderno da lasciare ai posteri. MS

After the good "Soldiers Of The New World Order" from the year 2020, multi-instrumentalist Fabio La Manna's progressive metal project Geometry Of Chaos returns. The band consists of what remains of Alchemy Room with Davide Cardella on drums, and Charles Soulz on keyboards. The five tracks that make up "Imaginary Friends" feature alternating special guests such as Marcello Vieira, Ethan Cronin and Elena Lippe on the microphone, while on the track "Lie Of Vampire" the sax is by Patricio Bottcher.
The description of this new studio effort is well described in the brief lines given by the artist in the accompanying bio: "The album continues the musical journey begun with "Soldiers Of The New World Order."
Stylistically it brings together a mixture of multiple influences, from modern Progressive Rock and that of the seventies, to Metal with its subgenres, to more film-inspired music, and various influences more properly Rock. In terms of the themes of the lyrics, the album is for all intents and purposes a concept on the theme of help, support, and the need for a helping hand from a third party, in situations of particular discouragement and difficulty on the part of the protagonist.
The lyrics leave a door open to the "paranormal," where each individual lyric can be interpreted as a dialogue, an exchange, between the protagonist and something otherworldly, belonging to other dimensions, or coming from his own mind."
With this in mind, the listening begins with "Tulpa" through a corpulently dark and cadenced procession. From the very first notes one denotes all the characteristics of the genre liked by admirers, those reinforced by success in the 1990s by Dream Theater and later developed in other matter by Sweden's Opeth. Relevant use of keyboards here scarcely present is excluded. Instead, the growl style makes a brief appearance.
The longest track on the album has the length of almost thirteen minutes and is the title track, where the group manifests the best of its performing abilities, including the compositional ones of Fabio La Manna. A veil of darkness always hovers in the music of Geometry Of Chaos, often amplified in the Death passages. The rhythmic changes abruptly and proves to be a good, perfectly oiled war machine. So there are during the listening numerous riffs, a little less the solos that although short nevertheless show a good technical preparation especially by La Manna. In this mini-suite, I again denote many points of conjunction with Opeth, especially in the quieter moments.
The discourse shifts with "Distant Voice," opened by Soulz's soothing piano and a deep narrative voice, that of La Manna. The electric guitar paints delicate harmonies bordering on the dreamlike, a pleasant moment of pause that intelligently breaks up the whole of "Imaginary Friends."
The eleven-minute "Lies Of Vampire" is a classic example of how Progressive Metal should be expressed between good melodies, technique and mood changes.
The record closes with the power of "Creature," an edgy, adrenaline-filled track, an abyss into darkness.
Geometry Of Chaos close this 2023 with an emotional album rich in sound, demonstrating good health both mentally and physically, a good example of modern Progressive Metal to leave for posterity. MS
