Nel nuovo millennio ci stiamo sempre più distanziando dalla musica supportata per andare verso quella liquida, ed è un peccato, perché si perde il contatto fisico con essa. E’ vero che c’è oggi un ritorno al vinile, tuttavia sono sempre i simpatici boomer ad accaparrarsi quelle copie, come si dice, una rondine non fa primavera. Tutto questo dispiace, perché immaginate voi cosa sarebbe stato “The Dark Side Of The Moon” senza il suo bel gatefoold creato da quel genio di Storm Thorgerson, e non lo dico per nostalgia, ma per dato di fatto. Avere un libretto in mano da leggere durante l’ascolto, toccare il disco, è un rito che i più appassionati arricchiscono anche con l’olfatto, un poco come si fa quando si compra un libro nuovo, confessiamo, chi non ne ha mai odorato le pagine? Non voglio entrare poi nel discorso della qualità sonora altrimenti non se ne esce più.
Questo preambolo solo per dire che è un peccato che un bel disco come “Iceblink del trio catanese Notturno, non goda del supporto necessario che lo avrebbe di certo esaltato oltremodo.
La copertina poi è molto bella, vero specchio della musica proposta in questo lavoro composto di nove brani. E’ anche vero che così facendo le spese si abbattono, e quindi si ha la possibilità di proporsi al mondo intero grazie ai noti canali digitali a disposizione. Forse va anche bene così, ma ascoltare musica su un buon impianto stereo piuttosto che in un pc o in un telefonino è a mio avviso ben altra cosa.
Detto questo (che non vuole essere una critica nei confronti dei Notturno, bensì un fotografare una scena collettiva che oggi si muove in codesta maniera all’unisono), veniamo alla band composta da Claudia Caudullo (chitarra, voce), Riccardo Liberti (basso e programmazione), e Francesco Cucinotta (synth), quest’ultimo giunto per ultimo nel progetto che promuove una musica sia malinconica che d’effetto.
Di certo Steven Wilson assieme ai Porcupine Tree e band come Anathema, o i più acustici Opeth, hanno fatto davvero una nutrita serie di proseliti, anche nel suolo italico. Da sottolineare che tutti questi nomi fanno comunque riferimento a un'unica band del passato, i Pink Floyd. Le canzoni sono per lo più strumentali, con un cantato sporadico, quindi i Notturno puntano tutto sulla qualità delle melodie e su certi assolo che strappano l’anima. Per realizzare “Iceblink” si avvalgono anche del supporto di una decina di special guest, la cura per i particolari dunque è ricercata.
“Beyond The Stars” apre con un arpeggio incessante, mentre l’ingresso delle altre strumentazioni ritmiche accrescono il patos del momento. In questa musica si possono estrapolare differenti generi dal Post Rock al Prog passando per la Psichedelia, tutti ingredienti che conducono al termine Post Prog Moderno. La chitarra elettrica quando parte in  pompa magna fa scorrere sulla pelle più di un brivido, ed è davvero un piacere ritrovarsi ad ascoltare a occhi chiusi ciondolando il capo nell’aria. “Echoes And Dust” riconduce a quello che suggerivo in precedenza, ossia certi Opeth acustici hanno lasciato il segno anche nei cuori dei Notturno. Il velo di malinconia svolazza sopra le nostre menti, tuttavia siamo sempre mediterranei, è inevitabile che alcune schiarite di sole giungano di tanto in tanto.
“Starless” è un titolo importante che riconduce inevitabilmente al capolavoro assoluto dei King Crimson, ma qui non trattasi di cover, piuttosto di stile Anathema periodo “Alternative 4” o
“Judgement”, quindi anni 1998 e 1999. Le chitarre si alternano fra arpeggi e graffianti riff metallici. La soave voce di Claudia Caudullo è la ciliegina sulla torta. La breve “The Sudden Glow” è un effettato momento di sintetizzatori che conducono alla title track “Iceblink”, canzone che riesce a unire presente e passato grazie a vocalità Folk su basi ancora una volta alternanti frangenti acustici ed elettrici. Per il mio gusto personale è uno dei momenti maggiormente interessanti dell’intero album. E’ la volta di “Remnants (Reprise)”, qui i Notturno diventano grevi, massicci, mentre la voce richiama il cadenzare di Vincent Cavanagh, ancora una volta Anathema.
“Circles Of Confusion” è una perla sonora con un finale di chitarra elettrica di matrice Pink Floyd, vera bomba emotiva che colloca questo brano al primo posto della mia graduatoria personale. “The Invisible Caress” è un lento d’effetto, mentre la chiusura è affidata a “Interception Of The Night Sky”, dove gli effetti psichedelici sono la spina dorsale del contesto sonoro.
Agli appassionati di questo genere non mi resta che consigliare l’ascolto di “Iceblink” nelle piattaforme suggerite nei titoli iniziali o qui nel blog, e di sottolineare il fatto che anche noi in Italia abbiamo diversi buoni rappresentanti, uno di questi si chiama Notturno, nomen omen. MS

In the new millennium we are increasingly distancing ourselves from supported music and moving toward liquid music, and that is a shame, because we lose physical contact with it. It is true that there is a return to vinyl today, however it is always the nice boomers who hoard those copies, as they say, one swallow doesn't make a summer. This is all unfortunate, because just imagine what "The Dark Side Of The Moon" would have been without its beautiful gatefoold created by that genius Storm Thorgerson, and I am not saying this out of nostalgia, but as a matter of fact. Having a booklet in hand to read while listening, touching the record, is a ritual that most fans also enrich with the sense of smell, a little like one does when buying a new book, let's confess, who has never smelled its pages? Then I do not want to go into the discussion of sound quality otherwise it will not come out. This preamble only to say that it is a pity that a beautiful record like "Iceblink by the Catania trio Notturno, does not enjoy the necessary support that would certainly have enhanced it beyond measure.The cover then is very beautiful, a true mirror of the music proposed in this work composed of nine tracks. It is also true that by doing so, expenses are lowered, and then you have the opportunity to present yourself to the whole world through the well-known digital channels at your disposal. Perhaps this is also fine, but listening to music on a good stereo system rather than in a pc or cell phone is in my opinion quite another thing.
Having said that (which is not meant to be a criticism of Notturno, but rather a snapshot of a collective scene that today is moving in unison in such a manner), let us come to the band composed of Claudia Caudullo (guitar, vocals), Riccardo Liberti (bass and programming), and Francesco Cucinotta (synth), the latter coming last in the project that promotes music both melancholic and impressive.
Certainly Steven Wilson together with Porcupine Tree and bands such as Anathema, or the more acoustic Opeth, have indeed made a large number of proselytes, even on Italian soil. It should be noted that all these names still refer to one band from the past, Pink Floyd. The songs are mostly instrumental, with sporadic singing, so Notturno stakes everything on the quality of the melodies and certain soul-ripping solos. To make "Iceblink" they also enlist the support of a dozen or so special guests, the attention to detail therefore is sought after.
"Beyond The Stars" opens with a relentless arpeggio, while the entrance of other rhythmic instrumentation heightens the pathos of the moment. Different genres can be extrapolated in this music from Post Rock to Prog via Psychedelia, all ingredients leading to the term Modern Post Prog.
. The electric guitar when it starts off on a high note sends more than a chill through the skin, and it is indeed a pleasure to find oneself listening with eyes closed, dangling one's head in the air. "Echoes And Dust" leads back to what I was suggesting earlier, which is that certain acoustic Opeth have also left their mark on the hearts of Nocturne. The veil of melancholy flutters over our minds, yet we are still Mediterraneans; it is inevitable that some sunshine will come from time to time.
"Starless" is an important title that inevitably leads back to King Crimson's absolute masterpiece, but here we are not dealing with covers, rather with Anathema period style "Alternative 4" or
"Judgement," so 1998 and 1999 years. The guitars alternate between arpeggios and scratchy metal riffs. Claudia Caudullo's suave vocals are the icing on the cake. The brief "The Sudden Glow" is an effected moment of synthesizers leading to the title track "Iceblink," a song that manages to unite present and past thanks to Folk vocals on bases once again alternating acoustic and electric bangs. For my personal taste it is one of the most interesting moments of the whole album. It's the turn of "Remnants (Reprise)," here Nocturno becomes raw, massive, while the vocals recall the cadence of Vincent Cavanagh, again Anathema.
"Circles Of Confusion" is a sonic gem with a Pink Floyd-esque electric guitar finale, a true emotional bombshell that places this track at the top of my personal ranking. "The Invisible Caress" is a slow effect, while the closing is given to "Interception Of The Night Sky," where psychedelic effects are the backbone of the soundscape.
To fans of this genre, all that remains is for me to recommend listening to "Iceblink" on the platforms suggested in the opening titles and to emphasize the fact that we in Italy have several good representatives as well, one of which is called Notturno, nomen omen. MS
