Una delle carte vincenti della vita è la perseveranza. Se ti dedichi con passione in quello che fai insistendo nel tempo, alla fine i risultati giungono inevitabilmente. C’è una nazione nel mondo che per sua forte personalità riesce spesso a stupire, anche nella musica, questa si chiama Canada. Dal Quebec giungono i Mystery, band oramai molto nota a tutti gli amanti del Neo Prog essendo attiva discograficamente dal 1996, quando escono con l’album “Theatre Of The Mind”. Passano gli anni, le realizzazioni diventano otto e l’esperienza sia live che in studio forgia la band che con la suddetta insistenza naviga in acque Neo Prog. Conoscete già bene quel suono energico, supportato da reboanti tastiere e chitarre elettriche, come ad esempio hanno saputo fare i Marillion, gli IQ, i Pendragon… Bene, oggi proviamo questo attraverso gli Arena di Clive Nolan e Mike Pointer, rispettivamente tastierista dei Pendragon e batterista dei Marillion. Nella musica dei Mystery tuttavia c’è molto di più, oltre la sinfonia si presentano piccole fughe sonore di stampo Hard Rock ma sono così ben camuffate da non infastidire gli ascoltatori del puro Prog.
I testi, come hanno scritto le band di questo genere nel tempo, variano dalla salvezza dell’anima alla difficile pubertà oltre che ai soliti amori controversi. Il gruppo composto da Jean Pageau (voce), Antoine Michaud (tastiere), François Fournier (basso, tastiere), Jean-Sébastien Goyette (batteria), Sylvain Moineau (chitarre) e Michel St-Pere (chitarre, tastiere) dimostra un’intesa invidiabile, brano dopo brano. Una maturazione raggiunta e invidiabile fuoriesce da ognuno dei otto brani proposti, per una chilometrica durata di oltre settantaquattro minuti di musica.
Subito i padiglioni auricolari sono deliziati dalle note di “Behind The Mirror”, la splendida voce di Jean Pageau è subito in cattedra, così come le chitarre e le tastiere del leader Michel St-Pere. Già da questo pezzo si può intuire cosa ci attende durante il viaggio sonoro. Ed è la title track “Redemption” a convincermi che il passato assimilato è bene amalgamato con la personalità della band. Arpeggi anni ’80 introducono all’ascolto in un riff ipnotico velato da una specie di nostalgia che non guasta mai, carta vincente di molte band. Questa è una sorta di ballata, anche se la parte centrale riesce a fare la voce grande grazie sempre alle chitarre elettriche. Mi ripeto, qui siamo in ambiti Arena e questo certamente non mi dispiace. La strofa resta impressa inevitabilmente.
“The Beauty And The Least” sono quasi dieci minuti di Prog variegato, qui la ritmica lascia trapelare l’intesa mentre le parti acustiche sono ancora una volta da pelle d’oca, soprattutto quando parte la chitarra elettrica. Ma non voglio dire tutto, lascio a voi il piacere di scoprire le piccole gemme nascoste in quest’album, tuttavia non mi posso esimere dal rilevare la brillantezza della suite finale intitolata “Is This How The Story Ends?”, un titolo che mi spaventa, speriamo non sia la fine della favola!
No, al momento in questo 2023 non ce n’è per nessuno, pur essendo il Neo prog, un genere facile da ascoltare non troppo caro ai stessi cultori di quello più puro degli anni ’70. “Redemption” ruggisce, è il re della foresta, con personalità, tecnica, melodia, rispetto per il passato, e chi più ne ha più ne metta. Gli amanti dei suoni pieni troveranno come me quest’album eccellente, tanto da farmelo mettere sin da ora al primo posto della mia classifica personale degli album dell’anno. La vedo dura scavalcarlo, anche se vi anticipo che l’ultimo degli immortali Yes mi ha colpito favorevolmente e inaspettatamente, ma una cosa per volta, intanto godetevi questo immenso “Redemption” che vorrei non finisse mai. One of life's trump cards is perseverance. If you devote yourself passionately to what you do by persisting over time, results will inevitably come eventually. There is one nation in the world that by its strong personality often manages to amaze, even in music, this is called Canada. From Quebec come Mystery, a band now well known to all lovers of Neo Prog being active discographically since 1996, when they came out with the album "Theatre Of The Mind." Years go by, the releases become eight and the experience both live and in the studio forges the band that with the aforementioned insistence navigates Neo Prog waters. You are already familiar with that energetic sound, backed by reboosting keyboards and electric guitars, such as Marillion, IQ, Pendragon were able to do... Well, today we experience this through the Arena of Clive Nolan and Mike Pointer, Pendragon's keyboardist and Marillion's drummer respectively. There is much more to Mystery's music however, beyond the symphony there are small Hard Rock-like sonic escapes but they are so well disguised as not to bother listeners of pure Prog.The lyrics, as bands of this genre have written over time, vary from the salvation of the soul to difficult puberty as well as the usual controversial loves. The group composed of Jean Pageau (vocals), Antoine Michaud (keyboards), François Fournier (bass, keyboards), Jean-Sébastien Goyette (drums), Sylvain Moineau (guitars) and Michel St-Pere (guitars, keyboards) demonstrates an enviable understanding, track after track. An achieved and enviable maturity flows out of each of the eight tracks on offer, for a mile-long duration of more than seventy-four minutes of music.
Immediately the earbuds are delighted by the notes of "Behind The Mirror," the splendid voice
of Jean Pageau is immediately on point, as are the guitars and keyboards of leader Michel St-Pere. Already from this track one can guess what awaits us on the sonic journey. And it is the title track "Redemption" that convinces me that the assimilated past is well blended with the band's personality. 80s arpeggios introduce the listening in a hypnotic riff veiled by a kind of nostalgia that never hurts, a trump card of many bands. This is a ballad of sorts, although the middle part manages to be the big voice thanks again to the electric guitars. I repeat myself, we are in Arena circles here and I certainly don't mind that. The verse inevitably sticks out.
"The Beauty And The Least" is almost ten minutes of varied Prog, here the rhythm section lets the understanding seep out while the acoustic parts are once again goosebumpy, especially when the electric guitar starts. But I don't want to say everything, I'll leave it to you to discover the little gems hidden in this album, however, I cannot refrain from noting the brilliance of the final suite titled "Is This How The Story Ends?", a title that scares me, let's hope it's not the end of the fairy tale!
No, at the moment in this 2023 there is none for anyone, despite being Neo prog, an easy listening genre not too dear to the same devotees of the purest 70s prog. "Redemption" roars, it is king of the forest, with personality, technique, melody, respect for the past, and you name it. Lovers of full sounds will find this album as excellent as I do, so much so that I'm putting it as of now at the top of my personal album of the year list. I see it hard to overtake it, although I anticipate that the last of the immortal Yes impressed me favorably and unexpectedly, but one thing at a time, meanwhile enjoy this immense "Redemption" that I wish would never end.
