Mi capita raramente di rimanere interdetto, non so se con Il Fedelissimo Bracco Branco sia il caso di ridere per il nome scelto che ricorda chiaramente il mitico cartone animato degli anni ’70 Bracco Baldo di Hannah e Barbera, oppure restare basito all’ascolto di questo EP “A Maze Of Mist And Waves”. Ho detto diverse volte in altrettante sedi che oggi fare musica strumentale è quantomeno coraggioso, ma in fondo se si tratta di Rock Progressivo va anche bene così. Se poi andiamo a vedere che in Italia il problema maggiore per le band resta proprio il cantato, forse la scelta è da considerarsi adeguata.
Ma chi sono questi simpatici artisti? Federico Panighel (tastiere), Loris Ceccato (basso), e Guido Morossi (batteria) mettono assieme il gruppo a Motta Di Livenza (Treviso) nel 2013. Iniziano come Hard Rock trio senza il chitarrista Stefano Crovato che li raggiunge soltanto nell’agosto del 2014. Nel 2017 autoproducono l’album d’esordio “Appunti Di Navigazione” destando subito l’interesse del Prog fans. Oggi ritornano con questo EP composto di un solo brano di quasi diciotto minuti suddiviso in quattro parti.
Resto immediatamente colpito dalla potenza del suono e dalle articolate elucubrazioni strumentali che si alternano fra pacatezza ed energia pura, specie quando l’unisono alza il volume con annesso assolo di chitarra supportato dalle reboanti tastiere di sottofondo, qui ammutolisco. Ascoltate il finale per credere. Ma andiamo con ordine, prima di tutto la musica suonata è un caleidoscopio sonoro, ogni movimento cambia forma e colore, passando dagli anni ’70 delle Orme al più moderno Hard Prog dei primi Spock’s Beard, ma citare band credetemi è veramente riduttivo. I ragazzi mostrano una grande padronanza strumentale e altrettanta cultura sul genere, nulla qui è dato al caso, tutto è al posto giusto al momento giusto e credetemi se vi dico che non può essere solo un caso.
La ritmica formata da batteria, e basso è perfettamente sincronizzata, e si sa che quando in un gruppo funziona il motore, la musica viaggia a cento l’ora, è anche il caso de Il Fedelissimo Bracco Branco. Arpeggi di chitarra ipnotici aprono il brano colloquiando con il pianoforte per poi inserire batteria e basso in un contesto a cavallo fra il passato e il presente. Ovviamente i cambi di tempo sono all’ordine del momento, tutto si modifica fra stop & go, la band riesce a fare tutto ciò senza fuorviare l’ascoltatore, questo la dice lunga sulla qualità della composizione. La batteria nel finale del primo movimento intitolato “Exodus”, fa i numeri nel puro senso della parola. Il secondo intitolato “Revelation” mostra ulteriormente i muscoli grazie soprattutto al ruggire dell’Hammond ed anche ai richiami Neo Prog. E subito adiacente giunge “Contact” che in tre minuti e poco più getta l’ascoltatore in un mondo psichedelico fatto di nebbia dove aleggiano nubi proprio come quelle rappresentate nella copertina. Ritorna l’ipnotico riff iniziale nella conclusiva “Synthesis” per poi fare esplodere il brano come nei fuochi d’artificio nel finale. Tante Orme soprattutto nel tocco del piano ma altrettanta personalità dimostrata in questi diciassette minuti.
Cari addetti ai lavori, vedo che Il Fedelissimo Bracco Branco si autoproducono, io non me li farei sfuggire per nessun motivo perché la materia è trattata con classe ed eleganza, tanto da farmi mettere questo EP fra le prime migliori uscite italiane di questo 2023. Ho detto tutto. MS

I am seldom baffled, not sure whether with Il Fedelissimo Bracco Branco it's a case of laughing at the chosen name clearly reminiscent of Hannah and Barbera's mythical 1970s cartoon Bracco Baldo, or being stunned upon listening to this EP "A Maze Of Mist And Waves." I have said several times in as many venues that making instrumental music today is at least brave, but at the end of the day if it is Progressive Rock it is also okay. If we then go and see that in Italy the biggest problem for bands remains just singing, perhaps the choice is to be considered appropriate.
But who are these nice artists? Federico Panighel (keyboards), Loris Ceccato (bass), and Guido Morossi (drums) put the band together in Motta Di Livenza (Treviso) in 2013. They began as a Hard Rock trio without guitarist Stefano Crovato, who joined them only in August 2014. In 2017 they self-produced their debut album "Appunti Di Navigazione" immediately arousing the interest of Prog fans. Today they return with this EP consisting of a single track of almost eighteen minutes divided into four parts.
I am immediately struck by the power of the sound and the articulate instrumental lucubrations that alternate between calmness and pure energy, especially when the unison turns up the volume with attached guitar solo supported by the rebooming keyboards in the background, here I am dumbfounded. Listen to the finale to believe. But let's go in order, first of all the music played is a sonic kaleidoscope, every movement changes shape and color, going from the 70s of Orme to the more modern Hard Prog of early Spock's Beard, but mentioning bands believe me is really reductive. The guys show great instrumental mastery and just as much culture about the genre, nothing here is given to chance, everything is in the right place at the right time, and believe me when I tell you that it cannot be just a coincidence.
The rhythm section formed by drums, and bass is perfectly synchronized, and it is known that when the engine works in a group, the music travels at a hundred an hour, which is also the case with Il Fedelissimo Bracco Branco. Hypnotic guitar arpeggios open the song by conversing with the piano and then insert drums and bass in a context that straddles the past and the present. Obviously tempo changes are the order of the moment, everything changes between stop & go, the band manages to do this without misleading the listener, this says a lot about the quality of the composition. The drums in the finale of the first movement entitled "Exodus," do the numbers in the pure sense of the word. The second titled "Revelation" further shows its muscles thanks mainly to the roaring Hammond and also to the Neo Prog references. And immediately adjacent comes "Contact" which in three minutes and a little more throws the listener into a psychedelic world made of fog where clouds hover just like those depicted on the cover. The hypnotic opening riff returns in the concluding "Synthesis" and then makes the song explode like fireworks in the finale. Lots of Orme especially in the piano touch but just as much personality demonstrated in these seventeen minutes.
Dear insiders, I see that Il Fedelissimo Bracco Branco is self-producing, I would not let them pass me by for any reason because the subject matter is handled with class and elegance, so much so that I put this EP among the first best Italian releases of this 2023. I've said it all. MS
