La storia del genere musicale A.O.R. ha radici lontane, piantate negli anni ’60 in America quando certi brani cominciano ad avere una durata maggiore rispetto ai 45 giri in voga in quel periodo. E’ un formato prettamente radiofonico e da qui deriva l’abbreviazione in A.O.R. (Album Oriented Radio). Generalmente queste canzoni stazionano dunque nei più capienti 33 giri e in concomitanza con l’uso sempre maggiore della FM radiofonica al posto dell’AM, in America prende piede in maniera importante. Con il passare degli anni sempre nel grande continente, band come Toto, Journey, Rush, Boston prendono maggiormente campo miscelando l’Hard Rock con il Progressive, ed ecco che il Rock diventa sempre più elegante, anche con una punta di Glam. Ed è per questo che il termine A.O.R. può anche significare Adult Oriented Rock. Resta il fatto che la musica proposta generalmente è tanto orecchiabile, seppure dotata di buona tecnica da parte degli strumentisti in azione. Non a caso c’è chi definisce il genere “Hard Pop”.
Anche nel 2023 escono buone realizzazioni da parte di chi comunque nella musica ha militato con professionalità, come nel caso dello svedese Thomas Lassar. Amante ed esecutore delle tastiere sin da bambino Lassar vive la scena svedese facendo parte di alcune band locali, per poi approdare a una delle formazioni più interessanti dell’A.O.R., i Crystal Blue. Purtroppo la band si scioglie presto, e il nostro cantante e tastierista inizia la carriera di turnista collaborando con band anche famose nel panorama in questione come per esempio i Last Autumn’s Dream e i Charming Grace. Con la concomitanza della pandemia, l’artista si chiude in studio per creare il suo primo risultato da solista: “From Now On”.
Il disco contiene un bel libretto per opera di Antonella “Aeglos” Astori con fotografie di Pavel Koubek, mentre le note introduttive sono scritte da Jörg Bonszkowski (Rock It! Magazine, Rock Avenue Radio Show). In esso sono contenuti i testi oltre che i credits brano per brano. Dieci le canzoni e il singolo apripista s’intitola “Whatever I Do”, un pezzo che mostra tutto lo splendore di questo genere, sonorità ampie esaltate da una buona registrazione effettuata al Basement Studio di Orebro in Svezia. Le tastiere ricoprono ovviamente il ruolo di prima donna oltre alla bella voce di Lassar, tuttavia non possono mancare i brevi assolo di chitarra elettrica prerogativa dell’A.O.R. in questo caso effettuato da Rob Marcello. Con l’artista suonano il batterista dei Crystal Blue Fredrik Akermo, il chitarrista degli AMOK Fredrik Fernlund, il bassista Ake Jennstig e il chitarrista ospite Rob Marcello (Defiants) che appunto dona la sua arte in tre tracce.
Non mancano ripetutamente i deja vu, ma poco interessa quando l’energia elargita è pulita oltre che corroborante, “When My Ship Comes In” la sa lunga al riguardo. “Losing Faith” rallenta il ritmo ma non l’intensità, le coralità con cui è composta tendono infatti a farci cantare assieme a loro.
Altra caratteristica dell’A.O.R. sono le ballate, quelle dritte al cuore, senza fare ostaggi come nel caso di “Back Where I Started” o della conclusiva e pianistica “From Now On”. Esistono brani più ricercati ad esempio “In Control”, una semi ballata aperta dalla chitarra acustica oppure “Turn Back Time”, fra le mie preferite. Per il resto tutto gradevole, ben arrangiato e nella norma.
Thomas Lassar rilascia un debutto elegante fatto per chi sa apprezzare la musica in tutte le sue sfaccettature, ma soprattutto tengo a sottolineare che è scritto con il cuore, e si sente! MS

The history of the A.O.R. music genre has distant roots, planted in the 1960s in America when certain tracks began to be longer than the 45 rpm records in vogue at the time. It is a purely radio format and hence the abbreviation in A.O.R. (Album Oriented Radio). Generally, these songs therefore stayed in the larger 33 rpm's and in conjunction with the increasing use of FM radio in place of AM, in America it took off in a big way. As the years went by, still on the great continent, bands like Toto, Journey, Rush, Boston took the field more, mixing Hard Rock with Progressive, and Rock became more and more elegant, even with a hint of Glam. And that is why the term A.O.R. can also stand for Adult Oriented Rock. The fact remains that the music on offer is generally very catchy, albeit with good technique on the part of the instrumentalists in action. It is no coincidence that some call the genre Hard Pop'.
Even in 2023, good achievements come out from those who have been professionally involved in music, as in the case of Swede Thomas Lassar. A lover and performer of keyboards since childhood, Lassar experienced the Swedish scene by being part of a few local bands, before joining one of the most interesting A.O.R. formations, the Crystal Blue. Unfortunately, the band soon broke up, and our singer and keyboard player began a career as a session player, collaborating with bands that were also famous in the scene in question, such as Last Autumn's Dream and Charming Grace. With the concomitance of the pandemic, the artist closes himself in the studio to create his first solo output “From Now On”.
The disc contains a beautiful booklet by Antonella “Aeglos” Astori with photographs by Pavel Koubek, while the introductory notes are written by Jörg Bonszkowski (Rock It! Magazine, Rock Avenue Radio Show). It contains the lyrics as well as track-by-track credits. There are ten songs and the lead single is entitled Whatever I Do', a track that shows all the splendour of this genre, wide sounds enhanced by a good recording made at the Basement Studio in Orebro, Sweden. The keyboards obviously play the role of prima donna in addition to Lassar's beautiful voice, but there is no shortage of short electric guitar solos prerogative of A.OR. in this case performed by Rob Marcello. Playing with the artist are Crystal Blue drummer Fredrik Akermo, AMOK guitarist Fredrik Fernlund, bassist Ake Jenn stig and guest guitarist Rob Marcello (Defiants), who lends his artistry on three tracks.
There is no shortage of deja vu repeatedly, but it matters little when the energy bestowed is clean as well as invigorating. When My Ship Comes In' knows a lot about that. "Losing Faith" slows the pace but not the intensity, the chorality with which it is composed tends to make us sing along. Another characteristic of A.O.R. are the ballads, those straight to the heart, without making hostages as in the case of Back Where I Started or the concluding, piano-driven From Now On'. There are more sophisticated tracks such as In Control, a semi-ballad opened by the acoustic guitar, or Tum Back Time, one of my favourites. Otherwise everything is pleasant, well arranged and within the norm. MS
Thomas Lasser releases an elegant debut made for those who know how to appreciate music in all its facets, but above all I would like to emphasise that it is written from the heart, and it can be heard! MS
