Anche se potrebbe sembrare strano, il genere Rock Psichedelico ha al proprio interno differenti ramificazioni, non tutto è sempre riconducibile al periodo storico dei mitici Hawkwind, tanto per fare un solo esempio. Nel tempo il genere si è evoluto fino giungere ai nostri giorni attraverso innesti di Porcupine Tree (sempre loro), Post Rock, e perché no anche del Doom Metal e del Prog. Il risultato è ovviamente per un pubblico di nicchia che comunque ama lasciarsi trasportare da sonorità spesso ipnotiche.
Un nome nuovo nell’ambito italiano è quello dei romani Nautha, trio che si forma nel 2016 a oggi composto da Antonio Montellanico (voce, basso, chitarra), Pierpaolo Cianca (chitarra) e Giorgio Pinnen (batteria, sintetizzatore). Esordiscono con “Metempsychosis”, quest’album formato da sette canzoni registrate ai Bloom Recording Studios a Montecelio, mixato da Matteo Andolina e masterizzato da Claudio Pisi Gruer Pisi ai Mastering Studio Community Page.
Viste le premesse, posso andare anche nello specifico consigliando l’ascolto di questo lavoro agli amanti oltre che dei Porcupine Tree anche a quelli di Motorpsycho, Riverside e Beardfish, vista la natura delle sonorità espresse.
L’ampiezza dei suoni si contrae fra Psichedelia e Metal sin dall’iniziale “Heracleion” dove in quasi dieci minuti mettono in pratica tutto ciò che si è detto, mentre la voce di Montellanico oltre che gradevole è bene inserita nel contesto che alterna ariosità a ruvidità. Questo genere pone il meglio di se soprattutto durante i trip strumentali, quelli che attendono con ansia gli amanti di questa musica. Il suono ovviamente è elettrico ma ogni tanto si posa su territori pacati rendendo l’ascolto molto fruibile. Proprio arpeggi di chitarra aprono “Laguna” per poi addentrarsi nella psichedelia elettrica attraverso riff dalla facile memorizzazione. “Kteis” mantiene il gusto per le melodie, arma che ritengo vincente per la riuscita, oltre che il gusto per la potenza sonora. Con “Kata Kumbas” il suono si fa improvvisamente introspettivo, morbido, supportato da una ritmica leggera in mid tempo spezzato, un alito sussurrato alle orecchie. Questo stile risulterà familiare agli estimatori dei polacchi Riverside. La breve title track di un minuto e mezzo invece attraverso il pianoforte di Giorgio Pinnen in stile Anathema accompagna all’ascolto di “Cerbero”, altro pezzo studiato nei particolari e non scontato, fatto di cambi di tempo e ruvidità. Breve ma incisivo l’assolo di chitarra a graffiare ulteriormente l’udito. Chiude l’album “Samat”, canzone molto Rock Progressive vetrina per le capacità compositive dei Nautha.
In definitiva “Metempsychosis” è un album pieno di buone idee, scorrevole e già maturo malgrado si tratti di un esordio. Per chi vi scrive, è una bella sorpresa, solo il tempo saprà dire quanto validi siano i Nautha che comunque al momento si presentano già con un asso di briscola nelle mani. MS

Although it might seem strange, the Psychedelic Rock genre has within it different ramifications, not everything can always be traced back to the historical period of the legendary Hawkwind, just to give just one example. Over time the genre has evolved to the present day through grafts of Porcupine Tree (also them), Post Rock, and why not even Doom Metal and Prog. The result is obviously for a niche audience that nonetheless likes to be carried away by often hypnotic sounds.
A new name in the Italian sphere is the Roman Nautha, a trio formed in 2016 to date consisting of Antonio Montellanico (vocals, bass, guitar), Pierpaolo Cianca (guitar) and Giorgio Pinnen (drums, synthesizer). They debut with "Metempsychosis," this album consisting of seven songs recorded at Bloom Recording Studios in Montecelio, mixed by Matteo Andolina and mastered by Claudio Pisi Gruer Pisi at Community Page Mastering Studio.
Given the premises, I can also go into specifics by recommending listening to this work to lovers in addition to Porcupine Tree also those of Motorpsycho, Riverside and Beardfish, given the nature of the sounds expressed.
The breadth of the sounds contracts between Psychedelia and Metal since the opening "Heracleion" where in almost ten minutes they put into practice all that has been said, while Montellanico's voice as well as pleasant is well inserted in the context that alternates airiness and roughness. This genre puts its best foot forward especially during the instrumental trips, the ones that eagerly await lovers of this music. The sound is obviously electric but occasionally settles into quiet territories making it a very enjoyable listen.
Just guitar arpeggios open "Laguna" and then delve into electric psychedelia through easily memorized riffs. "Kteis" retains the taste for melodies, a weapon that I think is a winner for success, as well as a taste for sonic power. With "Kata Kumbas," the sound suddenly becomes introspective, soft, supported by a light rhythm in broken mid tempo, a whispered breath to the ears. This style will be familiar to admirers of Poland's Riverside. The short one-and-a-half minute title track, on the other hand, through Giorgio Pinnen's Anathema-esque piano, accompanies the listening to "Cerberus," another studied in detail and not predictable piece of tempo changes and roughness. Short but incisive guitar solo further scratches the ear. Closing the album is "Samat," a very Rock Progressive song showcasing Nautha's compositional skills.
All in all, "Metempsychosis" is an album full of good ideas, smooth flowing and already mature despite being a debut. For the writer, it is a nice surprise, only time will tell how good Nautha are, who in any case at the moment already present themselves with a trump card in their hands. MS
