PURE REASON REVOLUTION - Terrifying Angels
InsideOut Music
Genere: Crossover Prog / Heavy Prog
Supporto: LP / CD / Bandcamp – 2026

MS

Versione Inglese:

PURE REASON REVOLUTION - Terrifying Angels
InsideOut Music
Genre: Crossover Prog / Heavy Prog
Format: LP / CD / Bandcamp – 2026

At this point, Pure Reason Revolution can truly be considered a historic name in Crossover Prog in every respect.
Formed in London in the early 2000s on the initiative of frontman and multi-instrumentalist Jon Courtney and guitarist Greg Jong, later joined by bassist and vocalist Chloë Alper, they became famous right from their debut masterpiece “The Dark Third” (2006) for their blend of Progressive Rock, Shoegaze, Alternative Rock, and Electronica. They have distinguished themselves in the Crossover Prog scene through their celebrated male/female polyphonic vocal harmonies and a dynamic use of heavy guitar riffs combined with modern synths and beats. After a hiatus lasting nearly a decade (from 2011 to 2019), the group reformed, releasing a series of acclaimed albums for the InsideOut Music label (“Eupnea”, “Above Cirrus”, “Coming Up To Consciousness”).
This seventh studio album was mixed by Bruce Soord of The Pineapple Thief and, unlike its predecessor “Coming Up To Consciousness”, marks a return to distinctly heavier, darker, and more aggressive sounds. Jon Courtney describes the conceptual inspiration linked to the biblical/mythological figure of the angel: not harmless cherubs, but overwhelming and fearsome entities. Joining Jon Courtney, Greg Jong, and vocalist Annicke Shireen on the record are exceptional guests such as Mariusz Duda (Riverside / Lunatic Soul) and Kristoffer Gildenlöw on bass, Paul Mullen on guitar, and Ravi Kesavaram on drums.
The album addresses the paradox of transformation: the very forces that save or transform us are often those that hurt and destroy us.
“Spin Like Fire” is immediately uptempo and direct, joining aggressive guitar riffs with a driving electronic pulse. The tension grows constantly through the contrast between ethereal vocals and a heavy rhythm section. It explores a sense of frenzy and loss of control. The metaphor of spinning like fire evokes the feeling of consuming oneself rapidly in high-pressure situations or emotional turmoil.
Highly progressive in structure comes “Black-Arrow Acrobats”, which alternates dreamy, suspended moments with heavy, almost Stoner/Alternative Metal explosions. This has now become part of the band's DNA, as have their catchy and engaging choruses. The lyrics reflect on the fragility of mental and relational balance ("acrobats"), where a single mistake or a "black arrow" can bring down the emotional structure that has been built.
“Haywire Heart”, short and rhythmic, serves as an interlude to the suite title track “Terrifying Angels”, an epic Prog piece fusing sprawling dynamics, majestic riffs, and interwoven vocals. The structure shifts the listener from delicate soundscapes to crescendos that remain carefully measured throughout. Here PRR explore the boundary between salvation and destruction, and how the things we perceive as protective can turn out to be overwhelming.
“Rumination Ruin” returns to dark, syncopated territory, anchored by a driving bassline and distorted guitars that explode in the chorus. "Rumination" refers to the obsessive cycle of negative thoughts. The lyrics analyze how constantly dwelling on the same mistakes can lead to psychological and emotional ruin.
At this point, the album shifts course toward a delightful emotional crescendo with two outstanding tracks to say the least: the first, “Below Radiance”, is an atmospheric piece that bridges the gap toward the work's conclusion, focusing on vocal textures and enveloping keyboards. It introduces the nearly fifteen-minute suite entitled “Hold Your Wrath”, a long, dramatic progression featuring emotional solos and an imposing finale. The track explores forgiveness, anger management, and the attempt to restrain destructiveness before it is too late.
“Terrifying Angels” is not an easy or comforting listen, nor does it intend to be. With this work, Pure Reason Revolution deliver one of the darkest, most complex, and emotionally dense chapters of their career, proving that their signature formula—built on violent contrasts between ethereal aesthetics and relentless riffs—has far from exhausted itself, finding instead a new and more conscious maturity. Jon Courtney and company abandon the reassuring geometries of recent Synth Prog to venture into rugged territory, where beauty wounds and redemption inevitably passes through turmoil. An imposing, at times visceral album that reconfirms the band at the absolute pinnacle of contemporary Progressive Rock. MS

Come sempre Max,recensione ottima e puntuale
