Nella vita non amo gli addii, piuttosto preferisco gli arrivederci, specialmente nella musica, sapendo bene che un artista può passare un periodo sabbatico. Chi ama suonare prima o poi ci ricade, questo mi insegna l’esperienza. Un esempio lo abbiamo avuto abbastanza recentemente con Steven Wilson, che ha passato gli anni a dire che i Porcupine Tree sarebbero finiti nel 2009 e non sarebbero più ritornati; e invece eccoli anche oggi a dire nuovamente la loro. Con questo auspicio, mi appresto all’ascolto del sesto album in studio della band Hard Prog romana Graal, dal preoccupante titolo “Swan Song” (Il canto del cigno). Dopo oltre venti anni di buona musica, i Graal pensano di tirare le somme con questi dodici brani lasciati come suggello della loro carriera.
“I cigni, sacri ad Apollo, al termine dei loro giorni, prevedendo il bene che troveranno nel ricongiungersi al loro Dio, si rallegrano”, così postano nella loro pagina Facebook. La leggenda narra che, prima di scomparire, il cigno esprima la sua gioia con canti ancor più belli e melodiosi di quelli di tutta la vita precedente.
Personalmente, ho molto apprezzato il loro stile sonoro avvinghiato ai tempi che furono, quell’Hard Prog non tanto rappresentato nel corso della sua esistenza da moltissime band, piuttosto da poche ma di ottima qualità. Il problema probabilmente è speculare a quello del Metal Prog, ossia chi ama il genere Rock “colto” (come lo si definisce) non apprezza l’innesto del grezzo Metal o Hard Rock; quelle chitarre distorte non sono proprio digeribili al Prog fan più radicato alle origini.
I Graal sono stati nel tempo degni rappresentanti italici; specialmente ho molto apprezzato “Regenerate” del 2023, un album che anche oggi vi consiglio di andare a rispolverare.
Andrea Ciccomartino (voce, chitarra), Francesco Zagarese (chitarra), Michele Raspanti (basso), Dario Gargano (batteria), e Danilo Petrelli (tastiere) aprono l’album con “To The Lake (Intro)”, il classico interludio che accompagna alla musica vera e propria; qui rappresentato con vento e tastiere a simulare voci femminili. “Land Of Truth” mette in luce il proprio vigore che contraddistingue il genere, un incedere ritmico che mi rimanda ai primi Saxon, per poi virare verso gli immortali Deep Purple. Tanta storia ma anche personalità; i Graal la sanno lunga, impossibile restare fermi durante l’ascolto.
Il ritmo rallenta e diventa mid tempo, accompagnato dal riff magnifico di “Life Goes On”, un pezzo che si accosta maggiormente alla formula canzone e a quella mediterraneità che ci contraddistingue. L’aspetto Progressive è più marcato in “The Best Is Yet To Come”, movimento d’atmosfera in versione ballata con un ritornello dall’ampio respiro. Attimi di Rock sudista prevalgono l’ascolto.
L’Hammond accompagna “Tears Of Rain”, canzone in bilico fra schiaffo e bacio, per poi tornare a graffiare attraverso “Freedom For Sale”, canzone sicuramente adatta per una serata live.
Non esulano canzoni più ricercate e addirittura vicine alla formula Folk, come nel caso dell’ottima “Galway Road”, strumentale che mette in cattedra le chitarre elettriche.
“Wrong Or Right” è un ottimo esempio di Hard Prog raffinato, mentre “Sabba (Le Streghe)” è un avvicendamento Folk; qui le streghe sorvolano sul lago e il cantato in italiano mette in evidenza i testi e una voce perfettamente inserita nel contesto. Questo è uno dei brani che ho maggiormente apprezzato, per varietà, tecnica e soluzioni strumentali; trascinante e coinvolgente.
“Northern Winds” si apre con la chitarra acustica, oscura e introversa come certe ballate dei Jethro Tull della metà degli anni ’70.
Se non andiamo a considerare l’outro conclusivo, “I Want Your Fire” è l’ultima canzone dell’album con la quale i Graal si congedano; un ruvido Hard Prog come diamine deve essere fatto!
“Swan Song” non fa altro che testimoniare la validità di questa band in possesso di tecnica e gusto per la composizione. Un disco da avere, con l’auspicio sincero che sia soltanto un arrivederci… Ragazzi, non fate scherzi! MS.

In life, I don't like goodbyes; I prefer see you laters, especially in music, knowing that an artist can take a sabbatical. Those who love playing eventually come back to it, that's what experience teaches me. A recent example is Steven Wilson, who spent years saying that Porcupine Tree would end in 2009 and never return; and yet, here they are today, having their say again. With this in mind, I'm looking forward to listening to the sixth studio album by the Roman Hard Prog band Graal, with the worrying title “Swan Song”. After over twenty years of good music, Graal thinks it's time to wrap up their career with these twelve tracks left as a testament to their legacy.
"Swans, sacred to Apollo, at the end of their days, anticipating the good they will find in reuniting with their God, rejoice", they post on their Facebook page. Legend has it that, before disappearing, the swan expresses its joy with songs even more beautiful and melodious than those of its entire previous life.
Personally, I've greatly appreciated their sound style, which is reminiscent of the past, that Hard Prog genre not represented by many bands over the years, but rather by a few of high quality. The problem is probably similar to that of Metal Prog, where those who love "cultivated" Rock (as some like to call it) don't appreciate the addition of raw Metal or Hard Rock; those distorted guitars are just not digestible for the most rooted Prog fans.
Graal has been a worthy Italian representative over time; I especially appreciated “Regenerate” from 2023, an album that I still recommend you dig out and listen to.
Andrea Ciccomartino (vocals, guitar), Francesco Zagarese (guitar), Michele Raspanti (bass), Dario Gargano (drums), and Danilo Petrelli (keyboards) open the album with “To The Lake (Intro)”, the classic interlude that leads into the actual music; here represented with wind and keyboards simulating female voices. “Land Of Truth” showcases the band's vigor that defines the genre, a rhythmic pace that reminds me of early Saxon, then shifting towards the immortal Deep Purple. A lot of history, but also personality; Graal knows their stuff, impossible to sit still while listening.
The rhythm slows down and becomes mid-tempo, accompanied by the magnificent riff of “Life Goes On”, a piece that leans more towards the song formula and that Mediterranean-ness that defines us. The Progressive aspect is more pronounced in “The Best Is Yet To Come”, an atmospheric movement in ballad form with a wide-ranging chorus. Moments of Southern Rock prevail in the listening experience.
The Hammond accompanies “Tears Of Rain”, a song balancing between slap and kiss, then returning to scratch through “Freedom For Sale”, a song definitely suitable for a live show.
There are also more refined songs, even close to the Folk formula, like the excellent “Galway Road”, an instrumental that showcases the electric guitars.
“Wrong Or Right” is a great example of refined Hard Prog, while “Sabba (Le Streghe)” is a Folk interlude; here, the witches soar over the lake, and the Italian lyrics highlight the lyrics and a voice perfectly integrated into the context. This is one of the tracks I appreciated the most, for its variety, technique, and instrumental solutions; captivating and engaging.
“Northern Winds” opens with acoustic guitar, dark and introverted like some Jethro Tull ballads from the mid-1970s.
If we don't consider the concluding outro, “I Want Your Fire” is the last song on the album with which Graal says goodbye; a rough Hard Prog, just like it's supposed to be!
“Swan Song” is a testament to the validity of this band, which possesses technique and taste for composition. A must-have album, with the sincere hope that it's just a see you later... Guys, don't joke about it! MS.
