E’ noto che l’esperienza insegna, il tempo e la gavetta forgiano spesso gli artisti i quali, grazie alla loro personalità, donano al puzzle della musica sempre un tassello nuovo da aggiungere. In Germania, Fabio Trentini (Orme), polistrumentista ed esperto produttore musicale, fonda il progetto Moonbound nel 2007, un vero e proprio supergruppo formato da componenti delle band  Orme e Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso. La musica che propone è un mix fra Pop Rock anni ’80 e Rock Progressive spesso velato di atmosfere malinconiche.
Le collaborazioni in cui va incontro negli anni, lo portano a costruire tre album, "Confession & Release" (2009), "Peak Of Eternal Light" (2011) e "Uncomfortable News From The Moon" (2017), con i quali si ritaglia un posto di tutto rispetto nell’ambito musicale, tanto da iniziare anche collaborazioni con artisti del calibro di Pat Mastelotto, Dave Gregory, Tim Pierce e Tony Levin, e scusate se è poco!
Trentini suona con Le Orme tra il 2009 e il 2017, ma è nel 2022 che la carriera giunge a un vero mutamento, il metodo solista passa la staffetta a una propria band, Moonbound si stabilizza in formazione tipo. Con lui si aggiungono nomi già noti nella storia del Prog italiano, come Alessandro Papotto al sassofono, clarinetto, flauto e tastiere (anche con Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso), Maurizio Masi alla batteria (Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso) e Matteo Ballarin (Aldo Tagliapietra) alle chitarre elettriche e acustiche. Questa nuova attitudine promette davvero bene, basta ascoltare questo EP dal titolo “Back To Square Four” per creare grandi attese nel nuovo album che probabilmente vedrà la luce questa estate del 2024.
Quattro i brani contenuti a partire da “If I Were (Let’s Make It Real)”, il quale attraverso una buona registrazione avvenuta agli Art Music Studio di Diego Piotto, mostra una professionalità che immediatamente si percepisce a pelle. La melodia di fondo è gradevole, specialmente nel ritornello molto Spock’s Beard style del periodo Neal Morse. I fiati sono la chicca vera e propria del sound Moondbound, facendo sia da collante attraverso assolo piacevoli, che da arrangiamento.
In “That's The Truth”, il Pop anni ’80 è ancora più marcato, ma in veste del tutto rimodernata soprattutto nel suono e in qualche influenza più recente che di certo in quegli anni non si era ancora palesata. Buono anche l’uso delle coralità di fondo.
“Twenty Years” è una ballata delicata con altrettante aperture soavi e un cantato piacevolmente emotivo. Il ritornello è ancora una volta diretto, facile da memorizzare, tanto che vi ritroverete a cantare assieme a Trentini. La parte strumentale del brano mostra un approccio decisamente più attuale, grazie agli innesti di matrice Porcupine Tree e a un uso della batteria ricercato. Il crescendo sonoro è altamente emozionante.
La chiusura spetta a “What Will Be Left”.
“Back To Square Four” è dunque un EP che mostra la nuova band intenta a crearsi un proprio DNA, una finestra nel nuovo mondo del Rock Progressivo che di questi tempi si presta a nuove sonorità e innesti, anche se vogliamo più commerciali nel senso buono del termine. Ciò che fa la differenza è la classe e la preparazione, quella che di certo non manca ai Moondbound, e sono certo che ne sentiremo parlare più approfonditamente. MS

It is well known that experience teaches, time and the grind often forges artists who, thanks to their personality, always give the puzzle of music a new piece to add. In Germany, Fabio Trentini, a multi-instrumentalist and experienced music producer, founded the Moonbound project in 2007. The music he offers is a mix of 80s Pop Rock and Progressive Rock often veiled in melancholic atmospheres.
The collaborations in which he goes into over the years lead him to build three albums, "Confession & Release" (2009), "Peak Of Eternal Light" (2011) and "Uncomfortable News From The Moon" (2017), with which he carves out a respectable place for himself in the musical sphere, so much so that he also starts collaborations with the likes of Pat Mastelotto, Dave Gregory, Tim Pierce and Tony Levin, and excuse me if that's not enough!
Trentini plays with Le Orme between 2009 and 2017, but it is in 2022 that the career comes to a real change, the solo method passes the relay to his own band, Moonbound settles into a type formation.Joining him are names already well-known in the history of Italian Prog, such as Alessandro Papotto on saxophone, clarinet, flute and keyboards (also with Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso), Maurizio Masi (Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso) on drums and Matteo Ballarin (Aldo Tagliapietra) on electric and acoustic guitars. This new attitude is really promising, just listening to this EP titled "Back To Square Four" is enough to create great expectations in the new album that will probably see the light of day this summer of 2024.
Four tracks are contained starting with "If I Were (Let's Make It Real)", which through a good recording that took place at Diego Piotto's Art Music Studio, shows a professionalism that is immediately noticeable on the skin. The underlying melody is pleasant, especially in the very Spock's Beard style refrain of the Neal Morse period. The horns are the real gem of the Moondbound sound, acting both as a glue through pleasant solos and as an arrangement.
In "That's The Truth", the 80s Pop is even more pronounced, but in a completely modernized guise especially in sound and some newer influences that certainly had not yet become apparent in those years. The use of background choruses is also good.
"Twenty Years" is a delicate ballad with just as many dulcet openings and pleasantly emotive singing. The refrain is once again direct, easy to memorize, so much so that you will find yourself singing along with Trentini. The instrumental part of the song shows a decidedly more up-to-date approach, thanks to Porcupine Tree-esque grafts and a sophisticated use of drums. The sonic crescendo is highly exciting.
Closure falls to "What Will Be Left".
"Back To Square Four" is thus an EP that shows the new band intent on creating its own DNA, a window into the new world of Progressive Rock that these days lends itself to new sounds and graft, even if we want more commercial in the good sense of the word. What makes the difference is class and preparation, that which Moondbound certainly does not lack, and I am sure we will hear more from them. MS
