Il Progressive Rock svedese ha vissuto una scena rigogliosa negli anni ’70, con band interessanti come Kaipa, Trettioariga Kriget, Radiomobel, per fare tre nomi, ma ha vissuto il periodo maggiormente influente nei ’90 con il successo di artisti come The Flower Kings, Anglagard, Anekdoten, Landberk e altri ancora che hanno dato nuova linfa e stimolo al genere attraverso influenze Genesis e King Crimson.
Mi ricordo con piacere che fui colpito nel 1997 dall’uscita di un disco a nome di una band che non conoscevo, i The New Grove Project e il lavoro in questione portava il titolo “Fool's Journey”. Ignorando il tutto, acquistai ugualmente il disco visto che della scena svedese qualitativamente tutto era affidabile, e con sorpresa notai fra gli strumentisti il nome di Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings, Kaipa, Transatlantic). Vedendo la fotografia interna, notai un giovanissimo Roine, la cosa m’incuriosì particolarmente tanto da farmi documentare a ritroso. Il periodo è quello degli anni ’70, il disco esce in origine in 300 copie stampate e il creatore del progetto porta il nome del batterista Ingemar Hjertqvist. “Fool's Journey” pur essendo un disco interessante, infarcito di sonorità Genesis e King Crimson, non ebbe un grande successo commerciale, tuttavia in seguito, negli anni ’90, la volontà di perseguire il cammino li conduce in Svizzera con musicisti della zona di Bienne-Friburgo. Fanno parte anche nomi importanti come quello del tastierista Pär Lindh e nel 2005 è la volta di “Brill”, altro disco interessante ma a sua volta non di grande successo. Il progetto vede un lungo stop per poi farsi nuovamente vivo dopo venti anni e questa volta senza i grandi nomi succitati. Ingemar Hjertqvist (batteria, voce) si coadiuva di artisti come André Schornoz (basso), Lennart Olsson (batteria), Tim Carlstedt (chitarra), Mats Sjögren (chitarra), Rikard Mathisson (tastiere), Robert Webb (tastiere), e Hanna Mattsson (voce).
Qualcosa cambia nello stile, non è più il Prog pregno di sonorità pomose, ma strizza l’occhio al Folk e alle composizioni più brevi e dirette. Oggi i The New Grove Project badano più alla sostanza componendo musiche vicine alla formula canzone pur mantenendo quell’affascinante velo di vintage, una volta ricordando i Pink Floyd (“Where Would You Be”), altre il classico Folk e Blues (“Mental Disillusion Game” e “Happy Land”).
L’influenza dei Moody Blues per Hjertqvist si palesa di tanto in tanto nelle composizioni, come nel caso di “The Ocean Is My Home”, il primo amore non si scorda mai. Bella la voce di Hanna, si può apprezzare soprattutto nella lenta “At The Ocean”. Il disco in senso generale è pregno di anni ‘60/’70, palese in “Far With My Car”, soprattutto nei dieci minuti conclusivi di “Circle Point” dove i Genesis di Peter Gabriel fuoriescono allo scoperto in maniera sfacciata nelle fasi strumentali.
In definitiva “Assorted Affections” è un disco dal quale non ci si deve attendere genialità o ricerche nel campo, è semplicemente un contenitore di canzoni dalle belle melodie e suonato con ottima tecnica strumentale. La volontà di tenere alta la bandiera degli anni che furono è tanta, la memoria giustamente va mantenuta, forse i più legati di voi al Prog classico troveranno l’album insipido, chi invece ascolta la musica senza paletti restrittivi di sorta, troverà in “Assorted Affections” più di un momento di soddisfazione. Swedish Progressive Rock experienced a thriving scene in the 1970s, with interesting bands like Kaipa, Trettioariga Kriget, Radiomobel, to name three, but it experienced its most influential period in the 1990s with the success of artists like The Flower Kings, Anglagard, Anekdoten, Landberk and others who breathed new life and stimulus into the genre through Genesis and King Crimson influences.
I recall with pleasure that I was struck in 1997 by the release of a record under the name of a band I did not know, The New Grove Project, and the work in question bore the title "Fool's Journey". Ignoring it, I bought the record anyway since of the Swedish scene qualitatively everything was reliable, and to my surprise I noticed among the instrumentalists the name of Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings, Kaipa, Transatlantic). Seeing the photograph inside, I noticed a very young Roine, which made me particularly curious enough to document backwards.
The period is the 1970s, the record was originally released in 300 pressed copies, and the creator of the project bears the name of drummer Ingemar Hjertqvist. "Fool's Journey" while an interesting record, infused with Genesis and King Crimson sounds, was not a great commercial success, however later in the 1990s, the desire to pursue the path leads them to Switzerland with musicians from the Biel-Fribourg area. Important names such as keyboardist Pär Lindh are also part of it, and in 2005 it was the turn of "Brill", another interesting but in turn not very successful record. The project sees a long stop only to come alive again after twenty years and this time without the big names mentioned above. Ingemar Hjertqvist (drums, vocals) is assisted by such artists as André Schornoz (bass), Lennart Olsson (drums), Tim Carlstedt (guitar), Mats Sjögren (guitar), Rikard Mathisson (keyboards), Robert Webb (keyboards), and Hanna Mattsson (vocals).
Something changes in the style; it is no longer Prog steeped in pomose sounds, but winks at Folk and shorter, more direct compositions.
Today The New Grove Project cares more about substance by composing music close to the song formula while retaining that charming veil of vintage, sometimes recalling Pink Floyd ("Where Would You Be"), others classic Folk and Blues ("Mental Disillusion Game" and "Happy Land").
The influence of the Moody Blues for Hjertqvist is evident from time to time in the compositions, as in the case of "The Ocean Is My Home"-you never forget your first love. Hanna's vocals are beautiful and can be appreciated especially in the slow "At The Ocean". The record in a general sense is steeped in the '60s/'70s, blatant in "Far With My Car", especially in the concluding ten minutes of "Circle Point" where Peter Gabriel's Genesis comes out unabashedly in the instrumental stages.
Ultimately "Assorted Affections" is a record from which one should not expect genius or research in the field, it is simply a container of songs with beautiful melodies and played with excellent instrumental technique. The desire to hold high the flag of the years that were, memory rightly must be maintained, perhaps those of you more attached to classic Prog will find the album bland, those who instead listen to music without restrictive stakes of any kind, will find in "Assorted Affections" more than one moment of satisfaction.
