Nella scena moderna del Rock Progressivo Italiano ci sono già nomi radicati che fanno capire come il tempo scorra così in fretta. I nuovi classici, o come li vogliamo chiamare. Sembra passato poco tempo da quando nel 1978 si diceva che il Prog sarebbe morto. Sappiamo poi com’è andata a finire, nuove leve hanno saputo tenere alta la bandiera, ad esempio uno dei nomi più interessanti e professionali post anno ‘2000 è sempre stato quello dei Daal.
Si fondano a Bergamo nel 2008 da un’idea di due grandi artisti nel campo, Davide Guidoni (batteria con Taproban, The Far Side, Gallant Farm, Nuova Era, Ozone Player e altri), e Alfio Costa (tastiere con (Tilion, Prowlers, Colossus Project, Dark Session). Le iniziali dei loro nomi vanno a comporre quello del progetto: Daal.
Li ho sempre seguiti sin dagli esordi discografici che iniziano nel 2009 grazie all’album “Disorganicorigami”, da subito il duo non ha mai espresso nella propria musica un servile copiaticcio nei confronti dei tempi che furono, tutt’altro hanno mostrato una grandissima personalità, così hanno sempre saputo comporre colonne sonore per la mente, fra viaggi psichedelici e meno. Parola d’ordine è sperimentare, anno dopo anno si evolvono pur mantenendo uno stile ben preciso, spiazzando a volte i propri fans i quali però sanno bene che artisti come loro hanno bisogno di mutare spesso la pelle per rimanere sempre splendenti.
Dopo sei album in studio, diversi live, raccolte ed EP, nel 2022 ritornano con “Daedalus”, accompagnati da due altri grandi nomi del settore, Ettore Salati alla chitarra e Bobo Aiofi al basso. Il suono è pieno, avvolgente e ben registrato nelle sei composizioni dell’album, questo fa piacere perché malgrado ci troviamo oggi al massimo della tecnologia, questa non sempre viene adoperata al meglio. Come tradizione Daal, l’artwork che accompagna il disco è curato e descrittivo della musica contenuta all’interno, le immagini create dallo stesso Davide Guidoni rendono giustizia all’intero reparto. Di certo la banalità non risiede in questo combo il quale si diverte a ricercare fra le note a partire da “Journey Trought The Spiral Mind part.1”, suite di quattordici minuti e brano più lungo dell’album. L’apertura psichedelica è d’effetto, fra suoni e rumori nell’oscurità ci rapisce, per poi lasciare spazio alla chitarra e alle tastiere. Sembra una colonna sonora dei Goblin, ma ancora è solamente l’intro. La musica proposta veste il nostro stato d’animo fino a farlo concentrare sui suoni che a mano a mano diventano vera e propria ipnosi. Alcuni di voi potrebbero trovare alcune analogie con il modus operandi di “Metanoia” dei Porcupine Tree, questo lo dico per far capire al meglio in che territorio aleggia più o meno questa musica. Nel finale sono chiamati in causa i Pink Floyd degli anni ’70, ma loro sono i Daal e riescono con maestria a fare proprio tutto il pacchetto. Sale l’intensità nel successivo “Icarus Dream”, pezzo Prog preso anche come singolo dell’album. Il Prog è sinfonia? E’ cambio d’umore? E’ lanciarsi in assolo importanti? Bene, qui questi ingredienti sono contenuti nei sette minuti e mezzo della durata. Raffinato e allo stesso tempo robusto è “Labyrinth 66”, altra composizione articolata da ascoltare con estrema attenzione. Il momento più breve del disco s’intitola “In My Time Of Shadow” ed è anche il più dolce, dove addirittura un mellotron viene a coccolarci l’anima. La melodia si stampa nella mente e rimanda a ricordi lontani, quando la musica aveva una valenza molto più importante che nei giorni d’oggi. Per chi vi scrive questo brano è strepitoso. La conclusione viene affidata come nei fuochi d’artificio allo sfoggio di tutto l’armamentario, ecco che dunque “Journey Trought The Spiral Mind Part.2” stupisce per ampiezza di sonorità e suggestioni. In conclusione “Daedalus” è un disco eccellente, un palmo sopra la banalità. Fra i miei dischi preferiti dell’anno 2022. MS

In the modern Italian Progressive Rock scene, there are already entrenched names that make you realize how time goes by so fast. The new classics, or whatever we want to call them. It seems little time has passed since 1978 when it was said that Prog would die. We then know how it turned out, new recruits have been able to hold the flag high, for example one of the most interesting and professional post-2000 names has always been Daal.
They were founded in Bergamo in 2008 by an idea of two great artists in the field, Davide Guidoni (drums with Taproban, The Far Side, Gallant Farm, Nuova Era, Ozone Player and others), and Alfio Costa (keyboards with (Tilion, Prowlers, Colossus Project, Dark Session). The initials of their names go to make up that of the project: Daal.
I have always followed them since their discographic beginnings beginning in 2009 thanks to the album "Disorganicorigami", from the beginning the duo has never expressed in their music a slavish copying towards the times that were, far from it they have shown a great personality, so they have always known how to compose soundtracks for the mind, between psychedelic journeys and less. The watchword is to experiment, year after year they evolve while maintaining a distinct style, sometimes displacing their fans who, however, know well that artists like them need to change their skin often in order to remain always resplendent.
After six studio albums, several live shows, collections and EPs, they return in 2022 with "Daedalus", accompanied by two other big names in the industry, Ettore Salati on guitar and Bobo Aiofi on bass. The sound is full, enveloping and well-recorded in the album's six compositions, which is pleasing because despite the fact that we are at the cutting edge of technology today, it is not always put to good use. In keeping with Daal tradition, the artwork accompanying the album is neat and descriptive of the music contained within, the images created by Davide Guidoni himself doing justice to the whole department. Certainly banality does not reside in this combo, which enjoys searching through the notes starting with "Journey Trought The Spiral Mind part.1", a fourteen-minute suite and the longest track on the album. The psychedelic opening is impressive, amidst sounds and noises in the darkness it enraptures us, then gives way to guitar and keyboards. It sounds like a Goblin soundtrack, but still it is only the intro. The proposed music clothes our state of mind until it focuses on the sounds that gradually become true hypnosis. Some of you may find some similarities with the modus operandi of Porcupine Tree's "Metanoia", this I say to give the best understanding of what territory this music more or less hovers in. In the finale, 1970s Pink Floyd is called upon, but they are Daal and they masterfully pull off the whole package.
The intensity goes up in the next "Icarus Dream", a Prog piece also taken as the album's single. Is Prog a symphony? Is it changing moods? Is it launching into important solos? Well, here these ingredients are contained in the seven and a half minute duration. Refined and at the same time robust is "Labyrinth 66", another articulate composition to be listened to very carefully. The shortest moment of the record is titled "In My Time Of Shadow" and it is also the sweetest, where even a mellotron comes to cuddle our soul. The melody prints itself in the mind and harkens back to distant memories, when music had much more significance than in today's days. For the writer, this track is resounding. The conclusion is entrusted as in fireworks to the display of all the paraphernalia, so here is "Journey Trought The Spiral Mind Part.2" astonishing in its breadth of sonority and suggestion. In conclusion, "Daedalus" is an excellent record, a palm above banality. Among my favorite records of the year 2022. MS
