In
questo periodo storico stiamo assistendo a un ritorno di vecchie glorie del
Progressive Rock Italiano, non soltanto di grandi nomi, ma anche di band cosi
dette allora “minori”, non certo per la qualità del prodotto realizzato, bensì
per una meno fortunata produzione e distribuzione.
Per
esempio stiamo per godere della musica dei Semiramis, autori di quel “Dedicato A
Frazz” che molto è stato apprezzato, e oggi è la volta del L’Uovo Di Colombo.
Dopo
cinquant’anni dall’uscita del disco omonimo, la band di Elio Volpini (chitarra,
basso e voce, unico componente originale rimasto) si presenta con quest’album
composto di dieci canzoni, fra inediti e rivisitazioni.
Con
lui suonano Stefano Vicarelli (Tastiere), Sabrina Scriva (Basso) e Lucrezio De
Seta (Batteria), mentre fanno apparizione anche importanti special guest
dell’ambito come Antonio e Agostino Marangolo, Carlo Pennisi, Fabio Cerrone,
Pino Ballarini, Luciano Regoli e tanti altri ancora.
Come
narrato nell’album del 1973, L’Uovo Di Colombo tratta della nascita di una
nuova vita, un’esistenza che pone speranza per un futuro migliore, questo è
analizzato tramite testi graffianti e misteri, ma poi tutto volge al termine,
dove noi siamo gli artefici del nostro destino. Ma sarà veramente la fine? Il
disco mi lascia con il dubbio, è stato uno “Scherzo” come ci racconta l’ultimo
brano. Il tempo ha saputo valorizzare questo lavoro Rock al momento non
apprezzato a dovere, così oggi ritorna in parte con una nuova veste, ben
registrato e arrangiato, ma tranquilli, trattasi sempre di Rock Progressivo
DOC.
“Sorvolando
l'Arabia Saudita” sono otto minuti abbondanti di musica ricercata ma non
logorroica o esageratamente sperimentale, le linee iniziali seguono un percorso
nato con il Jazz e una ritmica sofisticata mentre la chitarra elettrica disegna
le melodie basi da seguire a occhi chiusi. Il sax di Antonio Marangolo (Flea,
Goblin) completa l’opera.
Personalmente
già sono appagato dall’ascolto dello strumentale, questo per sottolineare la
qualità eccelsa della composizione mentre nella mia memoria si rivelano gruppi
come Perigeo, Bella Band, Agorà, Arti & Mestieri e altri.
Tratto
dal debutto giunge uno dei momenti più belli dell’album, “Anja”, con un tappeto
di tastiere che faranno scorrere i brividi sulla pelle dei vecchi nostalgici di
questa musica intramontabile. Tanta storia all’interno, un testimone passato di
mano in mano dopo cinque decenni. Molto dolce l’andamento e comunque ricco di
cambi umorali con un finale imperioso al confine del Neo Prog.
Ancora
Jazz Prog strumentale sopraffino, a tratti adiacente al mondo Area quello
dell’inedito “Beneath The Geyser”. Un altro classico s’intitola “Io”, un
equilibrato dosaggio fra Rock e Jazz, con un cantato coinvolgente, qui
nuovamente le tastiere si lanciano in scale ripide e giocose.
“I
Want Your Wife” strizza l’occhio al mercato internazionale e non soltanto per la
lingua inglese, piuttosto per l’andamento opportunamente orecchiabile.
Un
caldo suono di basso dialoga con la chitarra acustica in “French Picadores”
morbido esempio di come si può apprezzare il Jazz senza estremismi attraverso
la melodia. Altro movimento Rock ricercato s’intitola “Amazzone A Piedi”,
questo ha tutte le caratteristiche del sound L’Uovo Di Colombo oltre che la
splendida voce di Luciano Regoli (Raccomandata Ricevuta Ritorno). Altro momento
emozionante giunge da “L’Indecisione”, brano apripista del disco omonimo. Rimangono
l’apparentemente improvvisata “South East Wind”, e “L’Ultimo Volo” con Marcello
Sirignano ospite al violino.
“Schiavi
Del Tempo” è una bella considerazione da parte di Elio Volpini & company,
in effetti probabilmente o inconsciamente lo sono pure io, soprattutto dopo
aver ricevuto certezze come dall’ascolto di quest’album che sicuramente già si
fa spazio fra le migliori uscite di questo 2024. Musica fatta con cuore e
mente, ma soprattutto… Sapienza. Bentornati! MS

In this historical period we are witnessing a return
of old glories of Italian Progressive Rock, not only of big names, but also of
so called then "minor" bands, certainly not because of the quality of
the product made, but rather because of a less fortunate production and distribution.
For example, we are about to enjoy the music of
Semiramis, authors of that much appreciated "Dedicated To Frazz", and
today it is the turn of L'Uovo Di Colombo.
Fifty years after the release of the album of the same
name, Elio Volpini's band (guitar, bass and vocals, the only remaining original
member) comes up with this album consisting of ten songs, including unreleased
and revisited.
Playing with him are Stefano Vicarelli (Keyboards),
Sabrina Scriva (Bass) and Lucrezio De Seta (Drums), while important special
guests of the field such as Antonio and Agostino Marangolo, Carlo Pennisi,
Fabio Cerrone, Pino Ballarini, Luciano Regoli and many others also make
appearances.
As narrated in the 1973 album, L'Uovo Di Colombo deals
with the birth of a new life, an existence that poses hope for a better future,
this is analyzed through scratchy lyrics and mysteries, but then it all comes
to an end, where we are the architects of our own destiny. But
will it really be the end?
"Sorvolando l'Arabia Saudita" is a good
eight minutes of music that is researched but not logorrheic or overly
experimental, the opening lines follow a path born with Jazz and sophisticated
rhythm while the electric guitar draws the basic melodies to follow with eyes
closed. The sax of Antonio Marangolo (Flea, Goblin) completes the work.
Personally I am already gratified by listening to the
instrumental, this is to emphasize the sublime quality of the composition while
in my memory bands such as Perigeo, Bella Band, Agora, Arti & Mestieri and
others are revealed.
Taken from the debut comes one of the album's finest
moments, "Anja", with a carpet of keyboards that will send shivers
down the skin of old nostalgics of this timeless music. So much history inside,
a baton passed from hand to hand after five decades. Very smooth going and
still full of mood changes with an imperious ending bordering on Neo Prog.
More over-the-top instrumental Jazz Prog, at times
adjacent to the Area world that of the unreleased "Beneath The Geyser".
Another classic is entitled "Io", a balanced
dosage of Rock and Jazz, with an engaging vocal, here again the keyboards
launch into steep and playful scales.
"I Want Your Wife" winks at the international
market, and not only because of the English language, rather because of the
appropriately catchy progression.
A warm bass sound dialogues with acoustic guitar in
"French Picadores" soft example of how to appreciate Jazz without
extremism through melody. Another sought-after Rock movement is entitled
"Amazzone A Piedi", this one has all the characteristics of the
L'Uovo Di Colombo sound as well as the splendid voice of Luciano Regoli
(Raccomandata Ricevuta Ritorno). Another exciting moment comes from
"L'Indecisione", the album's self-titled opener. That leaves the
seemingly improvised "South East Wind", and "L'Ultimo Volo"
with Marcello Sirignano guesting on violin.
"Slaves Of Time" is a fine consideration
from Elio Volpini & company, in fact I probably or unconsciously am as
well, especially after receiving certainty as from listening to this album that
surely already makes its place among the best releases of this 2024. Music made
with heart and mind, but above all... Wisdom. Welcome back! MS
