La nostra nazione ha avuto nel tempo degni rappresentanti dello strumento chitarra elettrica, alcuni anche ottimamente dotati di tecnica sopraffina, un esempio recente è quello di Matteo Mancuso. Certo chi si cimenta in una prova completamente strumentale è già consapevole di non registrare un album hit, piuttosto ha il piacere di comunicare la propria musica e farsi notare da più artisti e ascoltatori possibili. Il mercato non regala grandi soddisfazioni a chi si mette in gioco in questa maniera, tuttavia sono pur sempre un’ottima vetrina nel mondo.
Un caso recente di chitarrista virtuoso italiano è questo di Edoardo Castellano, giovane pescarese nato nel 1991 e amante dello strumento sin dalla giovane età di tredici anni. Prende lezioni di pianoforte, ma si dedica allo studio della chitarra con il maestro Paolo Giordano che lo porta subito a suonare nei locali abruzzesi, per poi essere ammesso al prestigioso Berklee College of Music di Boston, dove si trasferisce a gennaio del 2012. Conseguita la laurea con lode in “Guitar Performance”, nel maggio 2015 rientra in Italia l’anno seguente per poi laurearsi al Conservatorio Luisa D’Annunzio di Pescara in “chitarra pop/rock” nel Marzo 2021, con la votazione di 110 lode e menzione d’onore. A questo punto, con cotanto bagaglio culturale, iniziano le esperienze assieme ad artisti vari come gli Ummo, con i quali registra un album e partecipa alla finale di Arezzo Wave Festival, RaiRadio1, concerto Primo Maggio a Pescara, oppure con il cantautore Francesco Moscardi.
La musica proposta in quest’album d’esordio intitolato “Primal Instinct” è colma di riff Heavy Rock con chiari riferimenti a miti come Steve Morse, Joe Satriani, e Richie Kotzen. Fra le note non mancano nemmeno richiami al Pop e al Blues.
Dieci sono i movimenti contenuti in quest’opera strumentale, dove le qualità di Castellano escono tutte allo scoperto. Il brano singolo tratto dall’album è “Guess What?” e su You Tube potete apprezzarne anche il video. Al basso suona Roberto Pace, mentre alla batteria c’è Andrea Giovannoli. Il pezzo è trascinante e pregno di storia del genere, mentre le dita di Castellano volano sulle corde della chitarra Fender Stratocaster American Standard, oltre che nella Gibson SG del 2005.
“1991” apre delicatamente con stile questo insieme di brani registrati all’Hologram Studios. Le melodie restano facilmente impresse nella mente, intelligentemente l’artista mette sulla bilancia sia la tecnica che la musica da ricordare, non un banale modo di mostrare i muscoli. Fra le composizioni che ho maggiormente gradito, ci metto la sostenuta e Heavy “Hello World”, la ballata dal sapore Blues “A Secret To Keep”, l’Hard Prog di “Naughty Boy”, la title track e la raffinata “I’ll Be Fine At The End”, piccola coccola per l’anima.
Un esordio di questo calibro va annotato per tenere sott’occhio un nostro nuovo talento che sono sicuro, riuscirà a far parlare molto di se.
Edoardo Castellano ha molte carte da giocare, e lo fa già oggi registrando questo variegato disco di canzoni mai banali, con l’intento di farsi spazio in questo mondo sonoro troppo spesso avvinghiato nella banalità delle soluzioni. Decisamente apprezzabile. MS

Our nation has over time had worthy representatives of the electric guitar instrument, some even excellently endowed with superfine technique, a recent example being that of Matteo Mancuso. Of course, whoever tries his hand at a completely instrumental is already aware that he is not recording a hit album, rather he has the pleasure of communicating his music and getting noticed by as many artists and listeners as possible. The market does not give great satisfaction to those who put themselves out in this way, yet they are still a great showcase in the world.
A recent case of an Italian virtuoso guitarist is this one of Edoardo Castellano, a young man from Pescara born in 1991 and a lover of the instrument since the young age of thirteen. He took piano lessons, but devoted himself to studying guitar with maestro Paolo Giordano, who immediately brought him to play in Abruzzo clubs, and then he was admitted to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he transferred in January 2012.
Having graduated with honors in "Guitar Performance," in May 2015 he returned to Italy the following year and then graduated from the Luisa D'Annunzio Conservatory of Pescara in "pop/rock guitar" in March 2021, with a grade of 110 cum laude and honorable mention. At this point, with such a cultural background, experiences begin together with artists as varied as Ummo, with whom he records an album and participates in the final of Arezzo Wave Festival, RaiRadio1, concert Primo Maggio in Pescara, or with singer-songwriter Francesco Moscardi.
The music offered in this debut album entitled "Primal Instinct" is filled with heavy rock riffs with clear references to such legends as Steve Morse, Joe Satriani, and Richie Kotzen. There is also no shortage of references to Pop and Blues among the notes.
Ten movements are contained in this instrumental work, where Castellano's qualities all come out. The single track taken from the album is "Guess What?" and you can also appreciate its video on You Tube. On bass guitar is Roberto Pace, while on drums is Andrea Giovannoli. The track is driving and steeped in the history of the genre, as Castellano's fingers fly over the strings of the Fender Stratocaster American Standard guitar, as well as in the 2005 Gibson SG.
"1991" gently opens in style this set of tracks recorded at Hologram Studios. The melodies easily stick in the mind, cleverly the artist puts both technique and music to remember on the scales, not a trivial way of showing muscle. Among the compositions I enjoyed the most, I put the sustained and Heavy "Hello World," the Blues-flavored ballad "A Secret To Keep," the Hard Prog of "Naughty Boy," the title track and the refined "I'll Be Fine At The End," a little pampering for the soul.
A debut of this caliber should be noted to keep an eye on a new talent of ours who I am sure, will manage to make a lot of noise.
Edoardo Castellano has a lot of cards to play, and he already does so by recording this varied record of songs that are never trivial, with the intention of making room for himself in this world of sound too often wrapped in the banality of solutions. Definitely appreciable. MS
