Diciamoci subito la verità, chi durante i primi passi con il proprio strumento nel tempo non si è divertito a registrare le composizioni? Magari le ha custodite gelosamente per il solo piacere di farlo, e c’è chi invece ha realizzato demo tapes da proporre a qualche casa discografica con la speranza di essere arruolato e distribuito. Negli anni ’80, per esempio, giravano le famigerate cassette, se queste poi sono appartenute a qualche band che ha successivamente sfondato, potevano considerarsi dei veri e propri cimeli.
Ricordi messi in un cassetto, prove che nel tempo sono state ampliate e modificate, oppure semplicemente dimenticate, queste operazioni chi suona musica le conosce a menadito. Capita a volte che esistono brani davvero riusciti che però non hanno avuto la fortuna di essere apprezzati, probabilmente perché il genere suonato in quel momento non era di moda, e quindi rifiutato da molti addetti ai lavori. Solo il tempo può rendere loro giustizia, e questo è ciò che è anche accaduto al cantautore torinese Davide Riccio, in arte DeaЯ.
A quattordici anni comincia a comporre musica e testi, così nel 1981 decide di registrare le prime idee, questo sino al 1990, nel frattempo Riccio milita in differenti band locali quali Canned Music, Bluest, Off Beat e Individua Vaga. Ho avuto il piacere di apprezzare la sua musica solista sin dal 2021 grazie alla romana Music Force che produce tre album, "Out Of Africa”, “Mon Turin” (2022) e “Dear Me!” (2023), a questo punto non resta che dare giusta vita anche a tutte quelle realizzazioni che sono rimaste in cantina, o meglio in cassetta. Capite voi che in tanti anni le registrazioni sono davvero numerose, così ecco il motivo del triplo cd intitolato “DeaR Tapes”. Brani rielaborati in fase di digitalizzazione, a volte anche velati dalle imperfezioni del tempo, ma questo poco importa, ciò che conta è la documentazione che rende eterne queste composizioni altrimenti perse nei meandri.
Il primo cd s’intitola “Music Was First” e contiene venti brani registrati dal 1981 al 1984. Si sente subito la voglia di emergere, il cantato in inglese sta a dimostrarlo. Le canzoni rispecchiano a pieno il sound di quegli anni ma non lo stile che aleggia nel cantautorato. L’elettronica spesso viene a supporto, come in “Death Watch”, “Jean Paul’s Dream” oppure in “The Weighing Of The Heart”, mentre in generale la voce profonda di Riccio non tenta mai strade impervie. Non mancano fughe nella ricerca come nella giocosa “Ideal Future”. Voci femminili spesso fanno da supporto ai brani. Passaggi nella psichedelia in “She Is Far From From The Land”, un poema di Thomas Moore, mentre chi avesse voglia di ballare può farlo sopra le note di “Bossa Rossa”.
Il secondo disco va dal 1985 al 1988, e s’intitola “To Keep 37 Years”. Già dalle prime note di “Me And Ufo” si coglie una crescita caratteriale dell’artista, il brano strumentale è del 1987 ed è particolarmente ricercato nelle sonorità psichedeliche. A seguire un insieme di stili che vanno dal sound southern alla disco, tuttavia generalmente la musica di Dear ha sempre uno sfondo di allegria e positività, oltre che d’ironia. Il terzo disco s’intitola “Daimon” e tratta il periodo fine anni ’80 e primi ’90. Interessante “Man Loves One day On Hearth” con incluso “A dream Within A Dream” di Edgard Allan Poe. In questo periodo della carriera Dear propende maggiormente verso la psichedelia con maggiori interventi di chitarra elettrica a sostegno.
Questo triplo è una testimonianza di chi ama la musica e non vuol perdere neppure un attimo della sua esistenza, un regalo per se stesso ma anche per noi, ovviamente rivolto a chi sa apprezzare. MS

Let's face it, who during their first steps with an instrument over time has not enjoyed recording their own compositions? Maybe you jealously guarded them for the sheer pleasure of it, and there are those who instead made demo tapes to propose to some record company with the hope of being enlisted and distributed. In the 1980s, for example, the infamous cassette tapes were going around; if these then belonged to some band that later broke through, they could be considered true heirlooms.
Memories put in a drawer, rehearsals that were expanded and modified over time, or simply forgotten, these operations those who play music know them inside out. It sometimes happens that there are really successful pieces that, however, have not had the luck to be appreciated, probably because the genre played at the time was not fashionable, and therefore rejected by many insiders. Only time can do them justice, and this is what also happened to Turin-based singer-songwriter Davide Riccio, aka DeaЯ.
At the age of fourteen he began to compose music and lyrics, so in 1981 he decided to record his first ideas, this until 1990, in the meantime Riccio played in different local bands such as Canned Music, Bluest, Off Beat and Individua Vaga. I have had the pleasure of appreciating his solo music since 2021 thanks to the Roman Music Force that produces three albums, "Out Of Africa," "Mon Turin" (2022) and "Dear Me!" (2023), at this point it only remains to give right life also to all those realizations that remained in the basement, or rather in cassette. You understand that in so many years the recordings are really numerous, so here is the reason for the triple CD entitled "DeaR Tapes." Songs reworked during digitization, sometimes even veiled by the imperfections of time, but that matters little, what matters is the documentation that makes these otherwise lost compositions eternal in the meanders.
The first CD is titled "Music Was First" and contains twenty tracks recorded from 1981 to 1984. One can immediately hear the desire to emerge; the English vocals stand to prove it. The songs fully reflect the sound of those years but not the style that hovers in songwriting.
Electronics often come in support, as in "Death Watch," "Jean Paul's Dream" or "The Weighing Of The Heart," while in general Riccio deep voice never attempts impassable paths. There is no shortage of escapes in the quest as in the playful "Ideal Future." Female voices often back up the tracks. Steps into psychedelia in "She Is Far From The Land," a Thomas Moore poem, while those who feel like dancing can do so over the notes of "Bossa Rossa."
The second record runs from 1985 to 1988, and is entitled "To Keep 37 Years." Already from the first notes of "Me And Ufo" one can grasp a character growth of the artist; the instrumental track is from 1987 and is particularly searching in its psychedelic sounds. This is followed by a mix of styles ranging from southern sound to disco, however generally Dear's music always has a background of cheerfulness and positivity, as well as irony. The third disc is titled "Daimon" and covers the late 1980s and early 1990s period. Interesting "Man Loves One day On Hearth" with Edgard Allan Poe's "A Dream Within A Dream" included. During this period of his career Dear leans more toward psychedelia with more electric guitar interventions in support.
This triple is a testament to those who love music and do not want to miss a single moment of its existence, a gift to themselves but also to us, obviously aimed at those who can appreciate. MS
