La storia del Rock Progressivo Italiano è disseminata di casi incomprensibili, non è la prima volta che un ascoltatore s’imbatte in un disco dalle qualità altissime ma che poi lo relega nel dimenticatoio. Se parliamo di questo genere i nomi che potete leggere in ogni enciclopedia, oppure rivista, sono sempre i soliti, Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso, Le Orme e Premiata Forneria Marconi, meritatamente intendiamoci, ma sorge un dubbio, come il Prog può essere arrivato ai giorni nostri ancora in salute? Di certo non bastano tre band per permettere tutto questo, se poi consideriamo che due di queste abbiano subito negli anni un pesante stop. Ciò sta significando che qualcun altro ha lavorato per loro, come un salmone controcorrente, specialmente negli anni ’80, quando il genere è dato per finito. Grazie ad alcune di queste band, la musica si è tramandata e ancora oggi anche i grandi nomi possono ancora suonare.
In Italia una di queste formazioni storiche porta il nome di Goad, la band toscana del polistrumentista Maurilio Rossi. Per i cinquant’anni di carriera pubblicano “Titania”, doppio cd o doppio lp, narrante la storia della regina delle fate Titania tratta dal romanzo di William Shakespeare “Sogno Di Una Notte Di Mezza Estate”. Il secondo disco invece contiene estratti live dei loro migliori successi registrati a Genova nel 2006 e a Firenze nel 2022.
Il sound dei Goad è sempre stato rispettoso del passato, soprattutto verso quello dei Van Der Graaf Generator, in realtà gode di una grandissima personalità ben riconducibile alla band già da pochi ascolti. In questo caso la produzione di Max Cirone dona a “Titania” un fascino aggiunto, quel velo d’oscurità ricco di particolari molto appetibile.
Il concept si divide in quattordici tracce, mentre l’artwork è affidato a Hans Trasid. Con Rossi suonano Paolo Carniani (batteria), Gianni Rossi (chitarra), Francesco Diddi (chitarra, sax, flauto),
Alessandro Bruno (chitarra, violino, oboe), e Martino Rossi (tastiere, basso).
Un organo apre “Upon A Little Hill”, movimento cadenzato nel proseguimento di facile memorizzazione. La voce graffiante, a tratti acida, è interprete dei testi cantati e recitati in lingua inglese.
Un velo di tristezza traspare dalle prime note di piano in “Let Fly To The Sun”, una ballata intimistica supportata da buoni arrangiamenti. La musica dei Goad ha del visionario, pur rimanendo molto vicino alla formula canzone. Difficilmente in “Titania” si fa la voce grossa, gli standard sono rivolti al quieto piuttosto che al gridato, fra i pezzi più ritmati c’è “Who Sent Me Some Roses”. Peter Hammill è di sicuro un punto di riferimento importante per Rossi, il quale anche nel cantato ne richiama la cadenza. Interessante la suite “Beauty Is Truth” suddivisa in sei parti.
Come anticipato, il secondo cd di dodici canzoni è registrato dal vivo con i successi passati e s’intitola “Live”.
Di certo i Goad in cinquant’anni di carriera hanno dato molto al genere grazie alla realizzazione di dieci album in studio, questo palesa l’amore per la musica da parte di Maurilio Rossi. Lo stile è rivolto a un pubblico specifico e preparato, ma si sa, all’interno del Prog ce n’è per tutti i gusti. MS

The history of Italian Progressive Rock is littered with incomprehensible cases, it is not the first time that a listener comes across a record with very high qualities but then relegates it to oblivion. If we talk about this genre, the names you can read in any encyclopedia, or magazine, are always the usual ones, Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso, Le Orme and Premiata Forneria Marconi, deservedly so, mind you, but a question arises, how can Prog have arrived in our days still healthy? Surely three bands are not enough to enable this, if we then consider that two of them have suffered heavy stops over the years. This is meaning that someone else worked for them, like a salmon against the tide, especially in the 1980s, when the genre was given up for dead. Thanks to some of these bands, the music has been passed on and even today big names can still play.
In Italy, one of these historic ensembles bears the name Goad, the Tuscan band of multi-instrumentalist Maurilio Rossi. For their 50-year career they release "Titania," a double CD or double lp, telling the story of the fairy queen Titania from William Shakespeare's novel "A Midsummer Night's Dream." The second disc, on the other hand, contains live excerpts of their best hits recorded in Genoa in 2006 and Florence in 2022.
Goad's sound has always been respectful of the past, especially towards that of Van Der Graaf Generator, it actually enjoys a great personality well traceable to the band from just a few listens. In this case Max Cirone's production gives "Titania" an added charm, that veil of darkness full of very palatable details.
The concept is divided into fourteen tracks, while the artwork is entrusted to Hans Trasid. Playing with Rossi are Paolo Carniani (drums), Gianni Rossi (guitar), Francesco Diddi (guitar, sax, flute),
Alessandro Bruno (guitar, violin, oboe), and Martino Rossi (keyboards, bass).
An organ opens "Upon A Little Hill," a cadenced movement in the easy-to-remember continuation. Scratchy, sometimes acidic vocals interpret the lyrics sung and recited in English.
A veil of sadness shines through from the first piano notes in "Let Fly To The Sun," an intimate ballad supported by good arrangements. Goad's music has the visionary, while remaining very close to the song formula. Hardly vocal in "Titania," the standards are aimed at the quiet rather than the shouty; among the more rhythmic pieces is "Who Sent Me Some Roses." Peter Hammill is certainly a major reference point for Rossi, who even in his singing recalls his cadence. The suite "Beauty Is Truth" divided into six parts is interesting.
As anticipated, the second 12-song CD is recorded live with past hits and is titled "Live."
Certainly the Goads in their fifty-year career have given a lot to the genre through the release of ten studio albums, this pales Maurilio Rossi's love for music. The style is aimed at a specific and prepared audience, but you know, within Prog there is something for everyone. MS
