Dai tempi dei tempi che l’uomo resta affascinato dalle tematiche dell’occulto, tutto ciò che non comprendiamo o che ci spaventa è incanalato nel sottosuolo, dove attribuiamo la dimora del solfureo diavolo. Alcuni ci scendono a patti (o almeno credono), altri lo ripudiano ma entrambi, comunque sia, riconducono certe circostanze a lui.
La musica è stata spesso da supporto alle questioni, così il cinema, la letteratura e la pittura. Molti i film storici da attribuire al male, in Italia per esempio come non ricordare “Profondo Rosso” con la colonna sonora a dir poco perfetta dei Goblin.
Probabilmente la paura ci fa sentire vivi, resta il fatto che è un argomento comune all’umanità.
Una storia giunge da Manhattan (New York), precisamente da un’idea del batterista dei Black Sun Ensemble, Bryan Kohl (alias Otto Terrorist) e da Eric Johnson, suo compagno nella band. Quest’ultimo risiede da molto tempo a Tucson, in Arizona, e registra sotto il nome di Action Figures.
L’intento è di creare un progetto di film e colonna sonora che potesse illustrare un viaggio audiovisivo riguardo alla nascita di New York. Nella musica di Eric Johnson, c’è teatralità che narra la grandiosità e la bellezza enigmatica dei movimenti occulti del diciannovesimo e ventesimo secolo, il disco s’intitola “Mystery Babylon”. Undici sono i movimenti che compongono la doppia opera sia visiva che sonora, infatti, nell’artwork interno del disco potrete leggere il link su cui andare a visionare il filmato completo della colonna sonora.
E’ un motivo lento e malinconico suonato da un pianoforte ad aprire “The Hierophant”, primo brano di “Mystery Babylon”. Un suono di violoncello e di mellotron rendono l’atmosfera greve, quasi in bianco e nero, ma è soltanto l’inizio, “Eight Of Wands Or Swiftness” spinge l’acceleratore sul Dark, immaginate i Pink Floyd dei primi anni ’70 intristirsi oltremodo.
Perfetto il connubio immagine/suoni anche per “The Lovers”, qui l’elettronica si propone prepotentemente nell’intro iniziale. La musica di Ation Figures si plasma secondo le esigenze non risparmiando nessun genere musicale, anche se soventemente si avvicina al mondo dei Goblin. Numerose quindi anche le strumentazioni che vanno dai fiati alle tastiere, chitarra, batteria proprio per indicare un accostamento al Progressive Rock non tanto per le sonorità quanto per l’attitudine di ricerca.
Sexy il sax di “Princess Of Cups”, i più afferrati di voi avranno già notato a questo punto che tutti i nomi dei titoli sono ispirati dal mazzo dei tarocchi "The Book Of Thoth" di Aleister Crowley, se così non fosse, ora lo sapete. “Six Of Swords Or Science” è ancora una volta piano e sax, così via sino all’arrangiamento dell’inno ortodosso russo con “In The Dark Night”. La delicatezza di certi passaggi lasciano l’ascoltatore concentrato sulle melodie, vera arma di questa colonna sonora. Il filmato e la musica si concludono nuovamente immersi nel mondo del Dark Rock, sempre con uno sguardo ai suddetti Pink Floyd.
Consigliato vivamente la visione e l’ascolto contemporaneo, anche se la musica resta gradevole già da sola.
“Mystery Babylon” è un lavoro sopra le righe, di carattere, attento ai particolari, in parole povere una piccola opera d’arte da gustare nel tempo. MS

From the earliest times man has been fascinated by occult themes, everything we do not understand or that frightens us is channeled underground, where we attribute the dwelling place of the sulfurous devil. Some come to terms with it (or at least believe), others repudiate it but both, whatever the case, trace certain circumstances back to him.
Music has often been supportive of the issues, so have film, literature, and painting. Many historical films to be attributed to evil, in Italy for example how can we not remember "Profondo Rosso" with the Goblin's soundtrack, to say the least, perfect.
Probably fear makes us feel alive, the fact remains that it is a common theme of humanity.
One story comes from Manhattan (New York), specifically from an idea of Black Sun Ensemble drummer Bryan Kohl (aka Otto Terrorist) and Eric Johnson, his bandmate. The latter is a longtime resident of Tucson, Arizona, and records under the name Action Figures.
The intent is to create a film and soundtrack project that could illustrate an audiovisual journey regarding the birth of New York City. In Eric Johnson's music, there is theatricality that narrates the grandeur and enigmatic beauty of the occult movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the record is titled "Mystery Babylon." Eleven are the movements that make up the double work both visual and sonic, in fact, in the disc's interior artwork you can read the link on which to go to view the full soundtrack film.
It is a slow, melancholy tune played by a piano that opens "The Hierophant," the first track of "Mystery Babylon." A cello and mellotron sound make the atmosphere heavy, almost black-and-white, but that's just the beginning, "Eight Of Wands Or Swiftness" pushes the throttle on Dark, imagine early 1970s Pink Floyd getting sad beyond belief.
The combination of image/sounds is also perfect for "The Lovers," here the electronics come forward powerfully in the opening intro. The music of Ation Figures molds itself according to needs, sparing no musical genre, although it often approaches the world of Goblin. Numerous therefore also the instrumentations ranging from woodwinds to keyboards, guitar, drums just to indicate a juxtaposition to Progressive Rock not so much for the sonorities as for the research attitude.
Sexy sax on "Princess Of Cups," the more grasping of you may have noticed by now that all the title names are inspired by Aleister Crowley's tarot deck "The Book Of Thoth," if not, now you know. "Six Of Swords Or Science" is again piano and sax, so on until the arrangement of the Russian Orthodox hymn with "In The Dark Night." The delicacy of certain passages leave the listener focused on the melodies, the true weapon of this soundtrack. The film and music conclude again immersed in the world of Dark Rock, again with a glance at the aforementioned Pink Floyd.
Highly recommended viewing and contemporary listening, although the music remains enjoyable on its own.
"Mystery Babylon" is an over-the-top, characterful, detail-oriented work, simply put, a small work of art to be enjoyed over time. MS
