Sarà capitato anche a voi di dire o avere ascoltato la classica frase “Oggi la musica non è più quella di una volta”, un vecchio classico che si tramanda di padre in figlio da sempre. Questa cosa personalmente mi fa sorridere, perché la buona musica è sempre esistita in ogni momento dell’esistenza umana, piuttosto per pigrizia e reminiscenza giovanile, siamo noi che restiamo relegati alla musica che ci ricorda il periodo migliore della nostra vita.
La tecnologia poi ha reso la ricerca della buona musica ancora più complessa, in quanto le uscite settimanali sono davvero troppe rispetto a decenni fa, obnubilando anche il buon materiale che invece esiste sempre.
Il mondo del Progressive Rock è davvero sconfinato al riguardo e ricco di numerose sorprese, un evolvere il genere continuo che apporta freschezza oltre che a nuove emozioni. La difficoltà risiede nel trovare in mezzo a milioni di uscite, questo qualcosa di nuovo che possa soddisfare le nostre esigenze, qui subentra il lavoro di un recensore che ascolta materiale il più possibile per chi si vuole informare. Internet aiuta molto per la distribuzione e l’informazione, resta tuttavia un’arma a doppio taglio che meriterebbe un articolo da procrastinare a parte per spiegarne approfonditamente le duplici capacità.
Una bella sorpresa sonora oggi proviene da Nizza, i Nine Skies, che poi tanto più sorpresa non è, visto che sono giunti al quarto album e anche personalmente ne ho già parlato in questa sede. Propongono un Neo Prog ricco di soluzioni non sempre stereotipate, questo soprattutto grazie alla cultura musicale dei singoli componenti che oggi sono formati da Anne-Claire Rallo (tastiere), Alexandre Lamia (chitarra e pianoforte), David Darnaud (chitarra), Alexis Bietti (basso) e Johnny Marter (batteria).
Il nuovo disco s’intitola “The Lightmaker” e giunge purtroppo dopo la prematura scomparsa dell’anno scorso di Eric Bouillette, marito della leader Anne-Claire Rallo per cancro. Le atmosfere sonore dedicate a lui sono inevitabilmente contemplative e toccanti, in un concept meditabondo riguardante l'introspezione umana incentrata sulle reincarnazioni del personaggio Rudy.
Otto tracce che prendono forma dall’introduttivo “An Fanai”, pezzo spazzato dal vento su un bel giro d’accordi di chitarra. La lista di partecipanti è arricchita dalla presenza di alcuni musicisti famosi nell’ambito progressivo, in “The Explorer” troviamo il tastierista e cantante della Steve Rothery Band, Riccardo Romano. La voce pacata e ricercata narra la storia del personaggio intento nel viaggio attraverso la sua transitoria esistenza di esploratore, un frangente riflessivo a ricordare le precedenti vite. Inevitabili gli accostamenti con il gruppo Marillion.
In “The Dreamer” invece il canto è affidato a Martin Wilson (The Room), gli arrangiamenti prendono una forma più consistente grazie all’uso degli archi. Lo stile diventa dinamico ed elettrico come gli inglesi Arena spesso hanno saputo realizzare. Altri cantanti rendono il pezzo ancora più interessante con dialoghi recitati da Laura Piazzai (anche Clive Nolan) e Arnaud Quevado.
E a proposito di grandi nomi in “The Lost” troviamo quello di Kristoffer Gildenlöw, bassista dei Pain Of Salvation. Il movimento è minaccioso, oscuro e inquietante, ma le sorprese non finiscono qui, come nei fuochi d’artificio il meglio giunge nel finale, due mini suite intitolate “The Haunted” e “The Architect” lasciano l’ascoltatore saziato da un’overdose di emozioni sonore. La musica diventa dunque sempre più articolata, impreziosita ulteriormente dalla qualità ritmica di Marco Minnemann, altro maestro del campo. E a proposito di Arena, da godere a pieno gli interventi chitarristici di John Mitchell. In “The Haunted” aleggia lo spirito di Eric Bouillette, incastonato nell’eternità esistenziale.
In conclusione, “The Lightmaker” dei francesi Nine Skies va inevitabilmente sul podio delle nuove realizzazioni dell’anno corrente, almeno per quello che riguarda il mio gusto personale, si trova come minimo al terzo posto di gradimento, un disco curato nei particolari, ben eseguito con melodie gradevoli alternate con altrettanti assolo strumentali. Si, la buona musica esiste sempre, cerchiamo di aprire la mente e di uscire da questa bolla temporale creata dai nostri limitati ricordi. “The Lightmaker” è semplicemente da possedere! MS

It must have happened to you too to say or have heard the classic phrase "Today's music is not what it used to be," an old classic that has been handed down from father to son since time immemorial. This personally makes me smile, because good music has always existed in every moment of human existence, rather out of laziness and youthful reminiscence, it is we who remain relegated to the music that reminds us of the best period of our lives.
Technology then has made the search for good music even more complex, as there are far too many weekly releases compared to decades ago, obnubilating even the good material that always exists instead.
The world of Progressive Rock is truly boundless in this regard and full of numerous surprises, a continuous evolving of the genre that brings freshness as well as new excitement. The difficulty lies in finding in the midst of millions of releases, this something new that can satisfy our needs, here takes over the work of a reviewer who listens to material as much as possible for those who want to be informed. The Internet helps a great deal for distribution and information, however, it remains a double-edged sword that would deserve a separate procrastination article to explain its dual capabilities in depth.
A nice sonic surprise today comes from Nice, the Nine SkIes, which then are not so much more of a surprise, since they have reached their fourth album and also personally I have already talked about them here. They offer a Neo Prog full of solutions that are not always stereotyped, this is mainly thanks to the musical culture of the individual members who now consist of Anne-Claire Rallo (keyboards), Alexandre Lamia (guitar and piano), David Darnaud (guitar), Alexis Bietti (bass) and Johnny Marter (drums).
The new record is titled "The Lightmaker" and comes sadly after the untimely death last year of Eric Bouillette, husband of leader Anne-Claire Rallo from cancer. The sound atmospheres dedicated to him are inevitably contemplative and touching, in a brooding concept concerning human introspection centered on the reincarnations of the character Rudy.
Eight tracks that take shape from the introductory "An Fanai," a wind-swept piece over a beautiful guitar chord loop. The list of participants is enriched by the presence of some famous musicians in the progressive sphere, in "The Explorer" we find the keyboardist and singer of the Steve Rothery Band, Riccardo Romano. The quiet, searching voice tells the story of the character intent on the journey through his transitory existence as an explorer, a reflective juncture reminiscent of previous lives. Inevitable are the juxtapositions with the band Marillion.
In "The Dreamer," on the other hand, the singing is done by Martin Wilson (The Room), and the arrangements take a more consistent form through the use of strings. The style becomes as dynamic and electric as the British Arena often achieved. Other singers make the piece even more interesting with dialogue recited by Laura Piazzai (also Clive Nolan) and Arnaud Quevado.
And speaking of big names in "The Lost" we find that of Kristoffer Gildenlöw, bassist of Pain Of Salvation. The movement is ominous, dark and disturbing, but the surprises do not end there, as in fireworks the best comes in the finale, two mini suites entitled "The Haunted" and "The Architect" leave the listener satiated by an 'overdose of sound emotions. The music then becomes increasingly articulate, further enhanced by the rhythmic quality of Marco Minnemann, another master of the field.
And speaking of Arena, John Mitchell's guitar interventions are to be thoroughly enjoyed. In "The Haunted" hovers the spirit of Eric Bouillette, embedded in existential eternity.
In conclusion, "The Lightmaker" by France's Nine SkIes inevitably goes on the podium of the current year's new achievements, at least as far as my personal taste is concerned it ranks at least third in liking, a record with attention to detail, well executed with pleasing melodies alternating with as many instrumental solos. Yes, good music always exists, let us try to open our minds and get out of this time bubble created by our limited memories. "The Lightmaker" is simply to be owned! MS
