Il Jazz dalla sua nascita, riconducibile agli inizi del ventesimo secolo, ha condotto la musica a intraprendere numerose strade. Nel tempo si è saputo modificare, reinventare e oltretutto ha influenzato una numerosa lista di generi sonori, basti pensare che negli anni ’50 si sia dovuto necessariamente attribuire il termine “Progressive” al suo fianco, proprio per identificare una musica in evoluzione. L’aggettivo poi negli anni ’70 sarà accostato al Rock. Lo ritroviamo ancora oggi a fianco dello stesso, per gruppi come Perigeo, Arti & Mestieri, Bella Band, Agorà etc. per fare alcuni nomi italiani.
Il progetto milanese Aether (da non confondere con quello polacco di Death Metal o brasiliano sempre dedito al Progressive Rock) nasce alla fine del 2021, ed esordisce con l’album omonimo anticipato dall’uscita dei due singoli “Preassure” e “Crimson Fondant”. Una musica che unisce molti stili e colori, le ritmiche ricercate rimandano al Progressive Rock soprattutto dei King Crimson, con base Jazz e Ambient. Autori di questo esordio così ricco di attese sono Andrea Ferrari (chitarra e tastiere), Andrea Grumelli (basso, chapman stick), Andrea Serino (Fender Rhodes e tastiere) e Matteo Ravelli (batteria ed elettronica). Ho già avuto modo in passato di apprezzare Grumelli nel progetto sperimentale NichelOdeon di Claudio Milano.
Il nome Aether si sposa bene alla causa musicale, l’etere è colui che aleggia nello spazio e unisce i quattro elementi di base, il fuoco, la terra, l’acqua e l’aria, se vogliamo approfondire, potrebbe essere anche un’antica sostanza anestetica. L’insieme di questi fattori fotografa a pieno la musica contenuta in questo debutto composto di undici brani. Il cd è contenuto in un packaging cartonato.
La preparazione tecnica degli elementi si manifesta immediatamente nelle dinamiche di “Echo Chamber”, dove il Jazz caldo e soffuso incontra il suono nervoso della chitarra in stile Robert Fripp.
Con “Radiance” le atmosfere si addolciscono in una carezza sonora su base arpeggiata di chitarra e un ottimo assolo di Fender Rhodes. Un ascolto da intraprendere a occhi chiusi avanti ad un buon impianto stereo, grazie alla buona qualità sonora delle registrazioni effettuate presso Il Guscio Recording Studios, Caminett Studio, XLR Studio e mixato nei Distant Zombie Warning nell’estate del 2022. La chitarra di Andrea Ferrari in “Thin Air” sonda un terreno vintage, dove negli anni ’70 i Genesis hanno costruito una mirabile carriera, un gran bel ascoltare. “Gray Halo” in due minuti e mezzo immerge l’ascoltatore in un suono di chitarra fluido, dove il musicista sembra ragionare su ogni nota scaturita con grande sentimento. Ed è la volta del singolo “Preassure”, questo è il brano che rappresenta al meglio il concetto della band, ossia la pressione dell’etere che influenza il movimento dei corpi, ispirato dalle teorie di Jacques Bernoulli della fine 1600. Qui tanto Jazz ma anche molto Progressive Rock che avvicinerei anche alla Scuola di Canterbury. Fra i brani che ho apprezzato di più, c’è “A Gasp Of Wind”, lieve e malinconico come certo Prog nordico ci ha insegnato, ottima vetrina per le qualità balistiche dei musicisti.
L’Ambient così come la succitata ricerca strutturale dei brani, si manifesta nei suoni di “The Shores Of Bolinas”, un contatto con l’etere espressamente tangibile. In un periodo dove la tecnologia e nella fattispecie il computer spopola nella musica, il progetto Aether scommette sull’uomo e lo fa con passione, il risultato è creativo, oltre che congegnato attraverso il calore umano.
Questo esordio strumentale pone ancora una volta sotto i riflettori, la qualità delle band italiane del settore, seconde a nessuno. Qui c’è della sinestesia, almeno io ne colgo i colori associandoli alle note mai banali e ricercate. Un disco sopra le righe da possedere senza ombra di dubbio. MS

Jazz since its birth, which can be traced back to the early 20th century, has led music down numerous paths. Over time it has been able to modify, reinvent and moreover has influenced a numerous list of sound genres, suffice it to say that in the 1950s the term "Progressive" necessarily had to be attributed alongside it, precisely to identify an evolving music. The adjective then in the 1970s would be juxtaposed with Rock. We still find it alongside it today, for groups such as Perigeo, Arti & Mestieri, Bella Band, Agorà etc. to name a few Italian names.
The Milanese project Aether (not to be confused with the Polish Death Metal or Brazilian one always devoted to Progressive Rock) was born in late 2021, and debuted with the self-titled album anticipated by the release of the two singles "Preassure" and "Crimson Fondant." A music that combines many styles and colors, the refined rhythms refer to Progressive Rock especially of King Crimson, with Jazz and Ambient base. Authors of this debut so full of expectations are Andrea Ferrari (guitar and keyboards), Andrea Grumelli (bass, chapman stick), Andrea Serino (Fender Rhodes and keyboards) and Matteo Ravelli (drums and electronics). I have previously enjoyed Grumelli in Claudio Milano's experimental project NichelOdeon.
The name Aether goes well with the musical cause; Aether is the one who hovers in space and unites the four basic elements, fire, earth, water and air; if we want to go deeper, it could also be an ancient anesthetic substance.
The combination of these factors fully photographs the music contained in this debut consisting of eleven tracks. The CD is contained in hardback packaging.
The technical preparation of the elements is immediately apparent in the dynamics of "Echo Chamber," where warm, muted jazz meets nervous Robert Fripp-style guitar playing.
With "Radiance," the atmospheres soften into a sonic caress on an arpeggiated guitar base and an excellent Fender Rhodes solo. A listen to be undertaken with eyes closed ahead of a good stereo system, thanks to the good sound quality of the recordings made at Il Guscio Recording Studios, Caminett Studio, XLR Studio and mixed at Distant Zombie Warning in the summer of 2022. Andrea Ferrari's guitar on "Thin Air" probes vintage terrain where Genesis built an admirable career in the 1970s, a great listen. "Gray Halo" in two and a half minutes immerses the listener in a fluid guitar sound, where the musician seems to reason over every note sprung with great feeling.
And it's the turn of the single "Preassure," this is the song that best represents the band's concept, which is ether pressure affecting the movement of bodies, inspired by Jacques Bernoulli's theories of the late 1600s. A lot of Jazz here but also a lot of Progressive Rock that I would also bring closer to the Canterbury School. Among the tracks I enjoyed most is "A Gasp Of Wind," light and melancholy as certain Nordic Prog has taught us, an excellent showcase for the ballistic qualities of the musicians.
The Ambient as well as the aforementioned structural research of the songs manifests itself in the sounds of "The Shores Of Bolinas," an expressly tangible contact with the ether. In a time where technology and in this case the computer is depopulated in music, the Aether project bets on man and does so with passion, the result is creative as well as contrived through human warmth.
This instrumental debut once again puts in the spotlight, the quality of Italian bands in the field, second to none. There is synesthesia here, at least I catch the colors by associating them with the never trivial and researched notes. An over-the-top record to own without a shadow of a doubt. MS
