Quando si leggono riviste musicali, oppure ci s’imbatte in qualche recensione su internet, molto spesso il termine Progressive Rock, oppure Neo Prog o Post Prog Moderno, preoccupano l’ignaro lettore che evita l’artista trattato in quanto a suo modo di pensare, sono termini che lasciano presagire musica articolata o logorroica. Questa è una degna conclusione di una persona superficiale che non ha avuto modo (o non ha voluto) di approfondire veramente l’argomento.
Esistono band e band, non tutte dedicano la loro passione alla tecnica e basta, ad esempio nel genere Neo Prog, nato nei primi anni ’80 grazie a gruppi come Marillion, IQ, Pendragon, Pallas e Twelfth Night per fare alcuni nomi, c’è molta ricerca per la melodia. I punti di riferimento di queste band sono generalmente i Genesis, i Pink Floyd e i Camel, comunque sia tutti gruppi inglesi.
Questo stile riesce a sopravvivere grazie oltre ai nomi citati e ancora in attività, a realtà come gli Arena, Sylvan, Galahad e molte altre ancora.
L’Olanda è un altro paese europeo molto attento al fenomeno, gruppi come Ahmshere, Argo, Egdon Heath, Flamborough Head, Knight Area, Like Wandy, Cliffhanger, Autumn, PB II, Ricocher, Triangle etc., tengono alta la bandiera.
Suonare oggi un genere che già nel 1980 a sua volta si basava su sonorità anni ’70 ha davvero del penalizzante, specialmente in una società dedita solamente a musica mordi e fuggi. A suo favore c’è da dire che comunque sia possiede un insieme di seguaci che attendono quotidianamente nuove uscite, in parole povere pochi ma buoni.
Se andiamo a leggere un debutto come questo degli olandesi The Foundation (da non confondere con il gruppo svedese), tocchiamo con mano quanto analizzato nel prologo di questa recensione.
La band si forma nel 1996 per volere del tastierista Ron Lammers in collaborazione con Sietse Dijkstra e Marcel Kerkdijk, ma le vicissitudini personali di alcuni componenti presto portano a congelare il progetto che riprende vita soltanto nel 2020.
Rom si circonda di buoni artisti, come ad esempio il cantante dei Knight Area, Mark Smit, Rinie Huigen (chitarra) e Gijs Koopman (basso) dei Cliffhanger. La band Autumn apporta al progetto un notevole contributo con i propri musicisti, Jens Van Der Valk (chitarra), Jan Grijpstra (batteria), e Jan Munnik (tastiere)
“Mask” è un concept album di stampo autobiografico che narra delle vicissitudini quotidiane e delle esperienze che l’uomo accumula nella vita.
Apre il disco “Before The Down”, pezzo strumentale atmosferico dall’alto livello emotivo in stile Pendragon, con tastiere e chitarra elettrica in evidenza. Pieno stile Neo Prog. Altro strumentale è la successiva “Birth”, dove la melodia si stampa facilmente nella memoria dell’ascoltatore. Rinie Huigen apporta con la chitarra un assolo Pinkfloydiano che ci lancia in alto con la fantasia.
“Climbing Mountain” parla del mondo lavorativo e dell’arrivismo professionale, il ritmo sale e la voce di Mark Smit è un valore aggiunto al brano. Irresistibile il ritornello.
Più riflessiva “Blind To Reality”, mentre la strumentale “Despair” fa capolino nel mondo del Metal Progressive seppure in maniera velata. Il brano trainante dell’album è la title track, piccola suite, dove all’interno risiedono tutti gli ingredienti giusti del genere. Un delicato suono di pianoforte apre “Renewall”, successivamente raggiunto da tutte le altre strumentazioni. Altro buon assolo di chitarra elettrica a condire il tutto.
“Unconditional” è una canzone d’amore di Ron per Betty, vera e propria canzone Pop ruffiana al punto giusto e comunque sia molto gradevole. “Mask” si conclude con la riflessiva “Future”, uno sguardo positivo verso il futuro da parte dell’autore che con questo disco ha voluto mettere a nudo la propria anima.
I The Foundation sono una nuova realtà che guarda più al passato che al presente, incurante delle mode e soprattutto amante delle belle canzoni anche da canticchiare. La musica è spesso sostenuta da una ritmica perfetta mentre le chitarre elettriche sono spesso il fulcro del brano. Il Neo Prog può dormire sonni tranquilli se anche nel 2023 ci sono sostenitori come questi, io apprezzo e applaudo. MS

When one reads music magazines, or comes across some reviews on the internet, very often the term Progressive Rock, or Neo Prog or Modern Post Prog, preoccupy the unsuspecting reader who avoids the artist being treated since to his way of thinking, they are terms that portend articulate or logorrheic music. This is a worthy conclusion of a shallow person who has not had a chance (or has not wanted) to really delve into the subject. There are bands and there are bands, not all of them devote their passion to technique and that's it, for example in the Neo Prog genre, which was born in the early 1980s thanks to bands like Marillion, IQ, Pendragon, Pallas and Twelfth Night to name a few, there is a lot of search for melody. The reference points of these bands are generally Genesis, Pink Floyd, and Camel, however all English bands.This style manages to survive thanks in addition to the names mentioned and still active, to such entities as Arena, Sylvan, Galahad, and many others. Holland is another European country that is very attentive to the phenomenon; groups such as Ahmshere, Argo, Egdon Heath, Flamborough Head, Knight Area, Like Wandy, Cliffhanger, Autumn, PB II, Ricocher, Triangle etc., hold the flag high.
To play today a genre that back in 1980 in turn was already based on 1970s sounds really has penalties, especially in a society devoted only to biting music. The band was formed in 1996 at the behest of keyboardist Ron Lammers in collaboration with Sietse Dijkstra and Marcel Kerkdijk, but the personal vicissitudes of some of the members soon led to a freeze on the project, which only revived in 2020.
Rom surrounds himself with good artists, such as Knight Area singer Mark Smit, Rinie Huigen (guitar), and Gijs Koopman (bass) from Cliffhanger. The band Autumn makes a notable contribution to the project with their own musicians, Jens Van Der Valk (guitar), Jan Grijpstra (drums), and Jan Munnik (keyboards)
"Mask" is an autobiographical concept album about the daily vicissitudes and experiences that humans accumulate in life.
Opening the album is "Before The Down," an atmospheric instrumental piece with a high emotional Pendragon style, with keyboards and electric guitar in evidence. Full Neo Prog style. Another instrumental is the following "Birth," where the melody easily prints itself in the listener's memory. Rinie Huigen contributes a Pinkfloydian solo on guitar that launches us high with imagination.
"Climbing Mountain" is about the working world and professional careerism, the beat picks up and Mark Smit's vocals add value to the track. Irresistible is the chorus.
More reflective "Blind To Reality," while the instrumental "Despair" peeps into the world of Progressive Metal albeit in a veiled way. The album's driving track is the title track, a small suite, where all the right ingredients of the genre reside within. A delicate piano sound opens "Renewall," later joined by all the other instrumentation. Another good electric guitar solo seasons the whole thing.
"Unconditional" is a love song by Ron for Betty, real Pop song pandering to the right point and still very enjoyable. "Mask" concludes with the reflective "Future," a positive look into the future from the author who wanted to bare his soul with this record.
The Foundation is a new reality that looks more to the past than to the present, heedless of fashions and especially fond of good songs even to hum. The music is often sustained by perfect rhythmics while electric guitars are often the focus of the song. Neo Prog can sleep soundly if even in 2023 there are supporters like these, I appreciate and applaud. MS
