Spesso diciamo che chi fa da se fa per tre, ma la stessa frase vale anche per la musica? In alcuni casi si, anche se di certo possono venir meno certe intese strumentali che spesso sanno fare la differenza fra un buon disco e un capolavoro. E’ anche vero che chi si dedica a tutti gli strumenti nutre una passione a dir poco smisurata per la musica. Un caso è quello del veneziano Alvise Forcellini, che presenta il progetto A Red Idea.
L’album nella discografia dell’autore è il secondo e s’intitola “A Second I Will Forget”, nove canzoni ispirate da un cantautorato di certo non scontato perché nelle composizioni aleggia sia il Folk che il Progressive Rock, quest’ultimo scaturito dal suono del Mellotron, spesso adoperato per donare al tutto un tocco d’enfasi retrò. Il primo album è “Bed Sea Walks” del 2019. Le strumentazioni usate sono molteplici, dalle chitarre al basso, sassofoni, a vecchi synth analogici per un buon risultato prodotto in studio da Andrea Liuzza.
Dice Alvise “Sono canzoni nate in momenti e luoghi diversi, dove il filo conduttore è il tentativo di cercare nuove soluzioni sonore. Non m’interessa rifare la stessa cosa due volte. Per questo non si assomigliano granché.”. Questo, in effetti, è lo spirito di chi ama anche il Rock Progressivo in tutte le sue sfaccettature. Il disco si presenta con un artwork semplice e cartonato mentre l’incisione è pulita e soddisfacente.
Nell’iniziale “Above You” l’artista immagina di volare, fra chitarra e voce scorrono immagini eteree sopra un cantato a doppia voce, maschile e femminile, dove un goccio di psichedelia impreziosisce il sound. Adeguato anche qualche effetto eco e brevi riferimenti (non so se sono consapevoli o meno) ai Beatles. Così accade per l’intro di “In The Sunshine” per poi lasciare campo alla vera formula canzone dove il ritornello è inevitabilmente il frangente più bello. La musica di A Red Idea è sempre gentile e delicata, si evince pure dall’ascolto dell’allegra “Keep Cuming” con i suoi “oh, oh, oh”, un passaggio nel Folk in bilico con il sound degli anni ’80. "Life Was Only" racchiude i versi che danno il titolo al disco: "Cosa m'importa, la vita è solo un incubo dentro a un sogno, un secondo che dimenticherò". Qui il suono gode di sfumature Punk / Psichedeliche.
Resto piacevolmente colpito da “Waiting For A Sign”, canzone che mi riporta ai Porcupine Tree più sognanti periodo di mezzo. In “I Wander” si resta attorno al mondo di Steven Wilson, questa volta però quello del progetto Blackfield, mentre la chitarra elettrica verso il finale dona un piacevole seppur breve assolo. Sale il ritmo attraverso “Your Beauty Is So”, semplice e diretta mentre “For You And I” ha un’anima gentile come in certe ballate dei Coldlplay, tuttavia gode da se di buon carattere grazie ad un’ottima strofa. La conclusione è affidata a “Episode 1”, strumentale Prog coinvolgente che fa da vetrina alle capacità esecutive dell’autore, questo per me è fra i momenti più alti dell’intero lavoro.
Alvise è un artista completo e maturo oltre che arguto, la sua musica è proprio come ha descritto lui, mai ripetitiva e aggiungo io anche bene arrangiata. “A Second I Will Forget” è d’ascoltare con tranquillità senza troppi impegni, adatta sicuramente per tutti i gusti. MS

We often say that do-it-yourself makes three, but does the same phrase apply to music? In some cases yes, although certainly certain instrumental understandings that can often make the difference between a good record and a masterpiece can be missed. It is also true that those who are dedicated to all instruments harbor a passion for music that is nothing short of boundless. A case in point is Venetian Alvise Forcellini, who presents the project A Red Idea.
The album in the author's discography is the second and is titled "A Second I Will Forget," nine songs inspired by a songwriting that is certainly not obvious because in the compositions hovers both Folk and Progressive Rock, the latter arising from the sound of the Mellotron, often used to give the whole a touch of retro emphasis. The first album is 2019's "Bed Sea Walks." The instrumentations used are many, from guitars to bass, saxophones, to old analog synths for a good result produced in the studio by Andrea Liuzza.
Says Alvise "These are songs born at different times and places, where the common thread is the attempt to search for new sonic solutions. I'm not interested in redoing the same thing twice. That's why they don't sound much alike." This, indeed, is the spirit of those who also love Progressive Rock in all its facets. The record comes with simple, hardback artwork while the recording is clean and satisfying.
In the opening "Above You," the artist imagines flying, between guitar and vocals ethereal images flow over a dual-voiced male-female vocal where a dash of psychedelia embellishes the sound. Appropriate also some echo effects and brief references (not sure if they are conscious or not) to the Beatles.
So it is with the intro of "In The Sunshine" and then leaves room for the real song formula where the chorus is inevitably the most beautiful juncture. The music of A Red Idea is always gentle and delicate, which is also evident when listening to the upbeat "Keep Cuming" with its "oh, oh, oh," a passage into Folk poised with the sound of the 1980s. "Life Was Only" encapsulates the album's title lines, "What do I care, life is just a nightmare inside a dream, a second I'll forget." Here the sound enjoys Punk / Psychedelic overtones.
I am pleasantly impressed by "Waiting For A Sign," a song that brings me back to the more dreamy Porcupine Tree middle period. In "I Wander" we stay around the world of Steven Wilson, this time however that of the Blackfield project, while the electric guitar toward the end gives a pleasant if brief solo. The pace rises through "Your Beauty Is So," simple and straightforward while "For You And I" has a gentle soul as in certain Coldlplay ballads, yet enjoys good character on its own thanks to an excellent verse. The conclusion is entrusted to "Episode 1," an engaging Prog instrumental that showcases the author's performing skills, this for me is among the highest moments of the entire work.
Alvise is a complete and mature artist as well as witty, his music is just as he described, never repetitive and I would add also well arranged. "A Second I Will Forget" is worth listening to quietly without too much effort, definitely suitable for all tastes. MS
