Quando l’esperienza è annosa, e quindi la band fra gli elementi si conosce da anni, il risultato sonoro è generalmente buono. Lo si è costatato in migliaia di band che hanno realizzato nel tempo dischi di buona fattura, il genere Metal Progressive non si discosta da quest’atteggiamento il quale potrebbe addirittura avvicinare nuovi proseliti al genere.
Ascoltare oggi un disco come questo dei tedeschi Ricochet è piacevole perché si possono estrapolare diverse sensazioni e intuizioni che fanno presagire a un approccio sia vintage sia moderno fra le note. Ecco dunque l’esperienza a cui faccio fede, unire differenti sonorità sotto la bandiera della formula canzone dalla facile assimilazione, porta spesso a risultati piacevoli.
La band di Amburgo si compone nei primi anni ’90 e realizza il debutto “Among The Elements” nel 1996. Sin dall’esordio s’intuisce a dovere il piacere che hanno nel proporre Metal Progressive melodico, tanto da farli entrare immediatamente nei cuori degli estimatori del genere. Restando su elevati criteri di produzione, i Ricochet danno vita a “Zarah - A Teartown Story” nel 2005 dopo un lungo stop. Oggi la band è composta da Michael Keuter (voce), Heiko Holler (chitarra), Hans Strenge (basso), Björn Tiemann (tastiere), e Jan Keimer (batteria).
Il disco “Kazakhstan” è registrato nei studio Art Of Music sotto le dita e le orecchie esperte di Jens Lück (Single Celled Organism) ed è formato da nove canzoni tutte della media durata di sei minuti, poco più o poco meno. Lo stile della band è riconoscibile in quanto riesce a fondere facili melodie ad assoli di buona tecnica strumentale, il tutto questa volta sotto una sfumatura psichedelica e in ambientazioni alquanto oscure. Non che il disco sia triste, anzi, tempi ritmati sono la maggioranza, vedi “King Of The Tales”, anche l’iniziale “The Custodians” ci mette in guardia sull’andamento del disco. La voce del nuovo cantante Keuter è quantomeno ottima, un mix di stili fra i quali nei frangenti più alti ricorda quella di Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden). Il vocalist ha militato nella band cover dei Uriah Heep, Easy Livin’ e ha partecipato a dischi di componenti della band sempre tedesca e storica Helloween. Fra rassegnazione e speranza, i testi narrano di comportamenti umani alquanto discutibili in questa era, ciò però non compone un vero e proprio album concept.
“Farewell” della durata di nove minuti abbondanti, alza il tiro e ci fa entrare con i piedi e tutto nel mondo Progressive dei Ricochet, fatto appunto di strumentali tecnici e sorprese melodiche. Qui risiede tutto il piacere di ascoltare Metal Progressive.
Altro pezzo che mi convince molto s’intitola “Waiting From The Storm” tanto per rimanere su certi livelli emotivi. Nei movimenti più pacati emergono riferimenti a band storiche come ad esempio gli americani Queensryche, il tutto senza fare il verso alla band di Seattle, bensì con la suddetta personalità che li contraddistingue.
Non voglio questa volta privare le sorprese dell’ascolto spoilerando tutto l’album, tuttavia tengo a sottolineare la conclusiva title track “Kazakhstan” che ha incorporata in se le radici di certa musica del luogo, fascino annesso.
Per dirla tutta è un disco che consiglio a tutti, non solamente a chi ascolta Metal Progressive, questo è un buon anello mancante fra Prog e Metal Prog, realizzato con indiscutibile professionalità. Ascoltatelo, non ve ne pentirete. MS

When the experience is long-standing, and thus the band among the elements has known each other for years, the sonic result is generally good. This has been observed in thousands of bands that have made good records over time, the Metal Progressive genre does not deviate from this attitude which may even bring new proselytes to the genre.
Listening today to a record such as this one by the Germans Ricochet is enjoyable because one can extrapolate various sensations and insights that hint at both a vintage and modern approach among the notes. Here, then, is the experience to which I put my faith, uniting different sounds under the banner of the easily assimilated song formula often leads to pleasing results.
The Hamburg-based band was formed in the early 1990s and released their debut "Among The Elements" in 1996. Right from the debut, one can properly sense the pleasure they have in offering melodic Progressive Metal, so much so that they immediately enter the hearts of admirers of the genre. Remaining on high production standards, Ricochet gave birth to "Zarah - A Teartown Story" in 2005 after a long stop. Today the band consists of Michael Keuter (vocals), Heiko Holler (guitar), Hans Strenge (bass), Björn Tiemann (keyboards), and Jan Keimer (drums).
The album "Kazakhstan" is recorded in the Art Of Music studios under the expert fingers and ears of Jens Lück (Single Celled Organism) and consists of nine songs all averaging six minutes in length, a little more or a little less. The band's style is recognizable in that it manages to blend easy melodies with solos of good instrumental technique, all this time under a psychedelic tinge and in rather dark settings. Not that the record is gloomy, on the contrary, rhythmic tempos are the majority, see "King Of The Tales," even the opening "The Custodians" warns us about the record's progression. New vocalist Keuter's voice is at the very least excellent, a mix of styles among which in the highest bangs is reminiscent of that of Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden). The vocalist played in Uriah Heep's cover band, Easy Livin', and has participated in records by members of the also German and historical band Helloween. Between resignation and hope, the lyrics tell of rather questionable human behavior in this era, this however does not compose a true concept album.
"Farewell" lasting a good nine minutes, raises the bar and makes us enter with feet and all into the Progressive world of Ricochet, made precisely of technical instrumentals and melodic surprises. Herein lies the whole pleasure of listening to Progressive Metal.
Another piece that really convinces me is entitled "Waiting From The Storm" just to stay on certain emotional levels. In the more sedate movements, references to historical bands such as the American Queensryche emerge, all without making the Seattle band sound like that, but rather with the aforementioned personality that sets them apart.
I do not want to deprive listening surprises this time by spoiling the whole album, however I would like to emphasize the concluding title track "Kazakhstan" which has embedded in it the roots of certain local music, charm attached.
To put it bluntly, this is an album I recommend to everyone, not only to Progressive Metal listeners, this is a good missing link between Prog and Metal Prog, made with unquestionable professionalism. Give it a listen, you will not regret it. MS
