IFSOUNDS – MMXX
Melodic Revolution Records
Genere: Progressive Rock
Supporto: Digitale – cd – 2023
I
a Petacciato nell’ormai lontano 1993 come IF poi solo successivamente Ifsounds,
oggi è composto da Lino Mesina (batteria), Runal (voce), Italo Miscione (basso),
Ilaria Carlucci (voce, cori) e appunto Dario Lastella.
riferimenti medievali.
anni ’70, Orme, Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso e Goblin su tutti.
In “Kandinsky's
MS

Molise's Ifsounds do not stop anymore, they have an
enviable creative streak and even for them the pandemic was a moment of further
reflection. "MMXX" is the ninth studio album and is a conceptual
work, focused on the dramas of contemporaneity, precisely referring to the pandemic
and beyond.
The group of leader Dario Lastella (guitar, bass,
keyboards, synths and vocals) formed in Petacciato in the now distant 1993 as
IF then only later Ifsounds, today is composed of Lino Mesina (drums), Runal
(vocals), Italo Miscione (bass), Ilaria Carlucci (vocals, backing vocals) and
precisely Dario Lastella. Finished the social health restriction, there is a
desire to return to talk and relate again between people, a desire to come out
of the closet that brings back to the meaning of life, all this is put into
notes, which are slightly detached from those past relegated mainly to
Progressive Rock, here there is also a look at the past and polyphonic
choruses, an ambitious work that is evident since the opening suite
"MMXX". It is the choruses that open the album, and they marry well
with the album's imagery by Laura Meffe. Church-like a cappella chants give way
to psychedelic undertones overlaid by a towering organ. The tempo picks up as
in Lucio Dalla's "Nuvolari", and alternates between researched
situations and easily acquired melodies as well as medieval references. There
is no lack of mid tempo and references to 1970s Italian Prog, Orme, Banco Del
Mutuo Soccorso and Goblin above all.
For the success of the suite, Ifsounds enlists the collaboration
of Claudio Lapenna, Mariano Gramegna, Nadezhda Chalykh and Giovanni Liberatore
on vocals. The keyboards fill the mother role; it takes careful listening to
enjoy the sounds to the fullest. Good guitar solo and also the little Jazz
grafts that actually never hurt in a suite.
The second track is titled "The Collector", has a sustained and simple rhythm that could take you back to the 1980s, while
the singing this time is in English. Here Prog has slapdash to do with it,
rather it is a pop song, although it possesses long synth phases and the
ever-present tempo change that slows down the ride.
A passage into the world of David Bowie through the
sympathetic "Stendhal Syndrome", simple, straightforward and
pandering to the right point in the chorus. In "Kandinsky's Sky"
Claudio Lapenna returns, this time on piano, a delicate ballad with a Neo Prog
scent.
The conclusion belongs to "MMXXII", a
nine-minute mini-suite of diverse music, where styles intertwine with each
other like strings of lianas, a showcase for the instrumental qualities of the
musicians in question. A finale to be applauded.
Ifsounds have by now accustomed us to fine
accomplishments, but here they attempt something more and different, almost as
if the term Progressive Rock is a narrow one for them. No matter how to
classify this music, the fact remains that it is excellent companion for
repeated listening, because I am sure that this album will spin quite often in
my player, I hope in yours as well. MS

Le Orme
LE ORME – Le Orme & Friends
Ma.Ra.Cash Records
Genere: Rock Progressivo Italiano
Supporto: Digital – cd – 2lp
Certi
nei Genesis, eppure come ha saputo dire Freddy Mercury “The Show Must Go On”,
davvero fatto sanguinare i fans.
La Storia New Trolls, “Felona E Sorona 2016” (2016 – Love Music) e “Classic
Orme” (2017 – Love Music).
Oggi
Vallis, i Trip, Sezione Frenante, Le Folli Arie, Moongarden, Monkey Diet, Alex
Carpani, Francesco Sartori, Tal Neunder, Jimmi Spitaleri, ma soprattutto gli
storici Tony Pagliuca e Tolo Marton. Un’operazione quantomeno grandiosa.
Tutto
MS

Some myths are difficult to criticize objectively, but
with modesty I will try. Some historic bands in the course of their long
existence have suffered heavy defections, as in the case of Francesco Di
Giacomo's departure for Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso, or simple dropouts, as
happened to Peter Gabriel in Genesis, yet as Freddy Mercury was able to say,
"The Show Must Go On," even if the old fans of some bands to whom the
misdeed happened, were not satisfied. In the case of Genesis, however, sales
have told the exact opposite, this is to say that in truth events must be
analyzed on a case-by-case basis, and it is not possible to lump them all
together.
Of course, the fact of the Laguna-based Le Orme is
really hard to digest, as Aldo Tagliapietra with his voice did not put a
qualitative seal on the band's style, but a real boulder, which is why the
split really made fans bleed. Over the years Le Orme continued in Progressive
Rock by replacing the vocalist bassist with Jimmy Spitaleri (Metamorfosi),
another great artist in the field, so Michi Dei Rossi (drummer and owner of the
Orme trademark) and Michele Bon (keyboards) took over the reins of the band and
continued without upsetting the historical style too much. They have not made
memorable albums but certainly of good interest, "La Via Della Seta"
(Love Music 2011) and "Sulle Ali Di Un Sogno" (2019 - Sony Music) are
decent works that time will decide whether they will be remembered as classics,
I believe, however, that they will not reach the splendor of "Felona E
Sorona" or "Uomo Di Pezza." In fact, to stay welded to the fans,
they also record three albums related in some way to the past, "Le Orme
Prognight Live 2013" featuring La Storia New Trolls, "Felona E Sorona
2016" (2016 - Love Music) and "Classic Orme" (2017 - Love
Music).
Today with "Le Orme & Friends" there is
to emphasize the creative effort of the band that wants to shout to the world
"This is us!", so they group together so many well-known artists in
the field, from Nico Di Palo (New Trolls), Osanna, Mangala Vallis, Trip,
Sezione Frenante, Le Folli Arie, Moongarden, Monkey Diet, Alex Carpani,
Francesco Sartori, Tal Neunder, Jimmi Spitaleri, but above all the historical
Tony Pagliuca and Tolo Marton. A great operation, to say the least.
All this happens for the fifty-seven years of the
band's existence, which at the beginning of the year starts with a crowdfunding
to reach its goal.
"Le Orme & Friends" is thus a choral
work but Aldo did not want to participate, feeling in this case "a guest
in his own house," this confirming the irremediable break. A tour in
Legnano anticipates the album, which according to the artists themselves,
should also be the last of their splendid career. On this I have strong doubts,
those who love music and especially those who live in it, it is true that maybe
they throw themselves heart and soul into new projects, but sooner or later
history tells us that they will have an inevitable fallout.
For that...We'll see, meanwhile the double lp
consisting of twenty-seven songs will be spinning often in my stereo system,
not because of nostalgia (a little of that too, I confess), but because of the
good quality of the compositions. The professionals almost never fail. A
tribute made up of unreleased songs with more highs than lows, a choral way of
embracing this lagoon model never to be missed again, but I am also sure that
none of this is needed to embed Orme in history, they already reside there on
merit... And what merit! Tagliapietra therefore has the right to eclipse, just
as The Orme has the right to achieve. However myths, and the world thanks you!

Raffaele Matta Trio
RAFFAELE
MATTA TRIO – Branda West
Isulafactory
/ Lizard Open Mind
Genere: Jazz contemporaneo –
Progressive Rock
Supporto: cd – 2024
Quante
sempre in primo piano.
In
MS

Isulafactory / Lizard Open Mind
Genre: Contemporary Jazz - Progressive Rock
Support: cd - 2024
How many times have we thought of escaping from
everyday life, maybe with a nice trip, to regenerate body and mind by visiting
places and situations, I think this is in the will of all of us. If it is then
an artist who does it, it certainly does not come without a nice sonic
travelogue, as it happened to Raffaele Matta, a musician by now of long
standing with an experience behind him that sees his first steps take place in
2005 thanks to the Wide Quintet and then achieve in a solo and collaborative
career.
Today, the Sardinian guitarist is assisted by the
participation of two co-regionals, Andrea Parodo (bass) and Nicola Vacca
(drums), to immerse himself in the idea of modifying the rhythmic nature of
Indian music through modern contaminations. This comes about thanks to the
realization of a long journey starting in Sardinia and then landing in India,
Vietnam, Thailand, with a long break in Mumbai; not coincidentally, the album
title "Bandra West" is precisely the name of a local neighborhood where
the trio often performed (and musically contaminated).
The record, containing eight tracks and a hardback
package, is the result of the synergy between two realities at opposite ends of
Italy, the Sicilian label Isulafactory and Treviso-based Lizard Records.
And it is with "Delhi" that the trio
immediately presents its own refined and rhythmic world, the research not
replacing the pleasure of melody, which still remains in the foreground. The
sound is warm thanks to the use of the bass outlining harmonic turns that are
easy to grip. The world of Progressive Rock is not distant either.
In "Japan" there is a change of register,
open to contaminations, it is a set of sounds that range in a wide-ranging
sensationalistic combination. Here the notes are more reasoned, leaving room
for the final electronics as well.
Special "1012" is a kind of Prog ballad in
which the staff is written with a fountain pen, careful about commas and
beautiful calligraphy. Certain passages are reminiscent of a certain kind of
Nordic Prog in the Landberk style.
The focus on rhythm becomes even more evident in
"Floor Scrubbers", close to Funk, where the bass and guitar seem to
be able to speak the same language perfectly. Here it is Canada's Uzeb that
comes back into my memory. The longest track on the album is titled "Hanoi",
a window into the place where the gaze sweeps over the surrounding
pastel-colored landscape through the sound of the 1970s, thanks to the arpeggio
of Matta's guitar, always gentle and introspective. The sonic crescendo is
highly engaging and functional, a showcase for the ballistic qualities of the
individual musicians.
A bass turn opens "Chiang Mai" an excerpt
from a journey into the world of Progressive Jazz, followed by the reasoned
"The Music Book" and "UAE", more like a goodbye to soon
rather than an end to an experience.
"Bandra West" is the summary of an
experience lived among friends and art, repository of a visceral love for that
music that never allows itself to be contaminated by banality, between research
and improvisation, all supported by technique and taste for harmony never left
aside, indeed, often protagonist. When you hear "music for the mind,"
this is one of those cases. MS

Clan Aldo Pinelli
CLAN
ALDO PINELLI – Nordiska Vatten
Open
Mind – Lizard Records
Distribuzione: Micio Poldo Edizioni
Musicali
Genere: Progressive Rock – Etnico
Supporto: cd – 2024
In
VICC (Visby International Centre For Composers) risulta galeotta.
Assieme a Pinelli suonano Roberto Sambrizzi (ex
I
melodie, sempre delicate come solo certa musica “dotta” sa disegnare.
Pinelli in tutti i suoi progetti.
Seguono
“Giochi
D’Azzardo (Parte 1,2,3,4 & 5) A New Mix” mette molta carne sul fuoco
protagoniste indiscusse.
l’ascolto in cuffia.
risultato. MS

Genre: Progressive Rock - Ethnic
Support: cd - 2024
In recent times Aldo Pinelli is experiencing a fervent
creative period, fresh from the record "Live At Spring Prog Fest"
(2023) of the project Invernalia, he now tries his hand with Clan Aldo Pinelli
at his second release after "Patagonia" of the year 2017.
His name is known not only in the Progressive Rock
sphere, because his passion for music makes him range in different contexts
that can vary from Ambient to Celtic, passing through Classical and Folk. This
time, however, the Buenos Aires-based guitarist and singer explores new shores,
influenced by the Nordic landscapes of Sweden, where attendance at the VICC
(Visby International Centre For Composers) residences turns out to be galleyed.
A look at New Age Progressive with orchestrated parts, leads to a pleasing
result especially for Mike Oldfiled lovers. The fully instrumental album
entitled "Nordiska Vatten" consists of nine tracks and comes in a
hardback edition with a cover by Oscar Bitz (1993) with strong references to
the world of Salvador Dali. Playing along with Pinelli are Roberto Sambrizzi
(formerly Hábitat) on drums, Silvia Pratolongo on percussion, Carlos Bignani on
additional keyboards and Paula Dolcera on flute.
The opening three minutes of "Volando Con Il
Drago" immediately show Pinelli's love for the electric prog of post-1980s
King Crimson, the more nervous-sounding ones. The journey proper begins with
the fifteen-minute suite "Nordiska Vatten", where music replaces
words to describe gray-colored moors and scenery, only occasionally riven by
rays of sunshine. The artist's background and the love he has for music in a
general sense is readily apparent. Symphonisms and effects embellish the
melodies, always delicate as only certain "learned" music can draw.
One is as if ahead of a documentary, amidst excellent stereo effects, unfailing
changes of mood, rhythm and transitions into the 1970s. I feel like comparing
this music to classical, and not just because of certain immersions in the
context, but because of the always rich and changing approach to composition.
The piece in question can be taken nicely as a summary of Pinelli's artistic
career in all his projects.
Two minutes of bubble-wrapped sound sensations follow
in the track "Eolofonia", here the experimental side is laid bare.
"Games Of Chance (Part 1,2,3,4 & 5) A New
Mix" puts a lot of meat on the fire of electronics, psychedelia, 70s
Genesian Prog and even an almost pastoral passage thanks to Paula Dolcera's
flute. The sonic quest also passes through the minute-long "Studio 6"
and then glides into airy spaces through "Baltic - A New Mix" where
keyboards are the undisputed protagonists. This piece was originally contained
on 2012's "Rainy Season".
"A Ritual Voice" has an eerie beginning,
where the pounding sounds instill suggestion, much like a horror movie
soundtrack. The good recording enhances the result; listening with headphones
is highly recommended for this track. "Open" plays with sounds and
leads to the concluding "Medarp Alilui", the most rhythmic song on
the entire album.
If you believe that music is also a means to estrange
yourself from the world, this one by Clan Aldo Pinelli will not disappoint,
especially if you are open-minded. Never stop at the logical, keep your mind's
door open to fully enjoy the result. MS

Merging Cluster
MERGING
CLUSTER - Peak Of Ephemeral Light
Lizard
Records
Genere:
Neo Prog / Post Prog Moderno
Supporto: cd – 2024
rinascere avviene grazie a band come Marillion, IQ e Pendragon in primis, e porta
i Pink Floyd.
I
aggressivo s’intitola “Planning The Renaissance”, “Land Of The Wait” è una
carezza all’anima, mentre la conclusiva “Over [You]” chiude il cerchio con “Dysrationalia”.
Intrigante. MS

MERGING CLUSTER - Peak Of Ephemeral Light
Lizard Records
Genre: Neo Prog / Modern Post Prog
Support: cd - 2024
Rock over time has branched out in an impressive way,
so much so that today it is very difficult to disentangle the sounds and names
in which certain types of sounds, what we commonly call genres, are relegated.
In the more symphonic side of Rock we know well that Progressive Rock made
history through the use of keyboards, assisting the electric guitar until the
1960s, the undisputed protagonist of this music. Heavy Metal towards the end of
the 1970s opened a new scenario, initially opposed to Prog, as was also the
case with Punk, only to convoy weddedly with the success of Dream Theater into
what we will officially call in the 1980s Progressive Metal. In the same period
the classic Progressive Rock, slumbered in the late 1970s by the new fashions
of disco, New Wave and precisely Punk, was resurrected; this revival took place
thanks to bands such as Marillion, IQ and Pendragon in primis, and bore the
name Neo Prog. If you want to learn more about it, I have written about it for
arcane editions in a book called "Neo Prog – Storia E Discografia".
Landmarks for this stylnovo are Camel, Genesis, and
Pink Floyd. Now I ask you, is it possible to merge Metal with Neo Prog? Of
course it is, then the result may not please everyone, but it is certainly part
of the natural evolution of music with artists who just love to play it,
without restrictive stakes.
This is how the Tuscan band Merging Cluster, which was
founded as far back as 2010, works. The proposed genre varies through arpeggios
and riffs in the style of Queensryche (another fundamental band for Metal
Prog), to classic Neo Prog, a combination certainly fascinating for those who
like me want from music to be amazed, but always with melody in the cathedra,
in simple words not through a boorish experimenting with complex sounds or compositions
without head or tail. At the end of listening in the head must always remain
something pleasant. The band consists of Gabriele Marconcini (Biofonia, Raven
Sad) on vocals, Marco Casalini (Trigono, Profilo, Underskin) on drums, Roberto
Manzani on bass, Gianfilippo Innocenti (Chaos Venture) on guitar and Emiliano
Galli (Esterhazy, Bifonia) on keyboards.
We could call "Peak Of Ephemeral Light"
their debut record, although in fact this sees light in ep format as early as
2014, it takes care of the attentive Lizard Records to give new life to this
work.
The ten-plus minutes of "Dysrationalia"
immediately plunges the listener into the softer terrain of Queensryche. An
optimal search for arrangements brings out the vocal qualities of Marconcini
and of the composition in a general sense, where keyboards take center stage at
times as does Innocenti's guitar, which engages in gritty riffs and thoughtful
solos. The progression is highly harmonic.
"Peak Of Ephemeral Light" delves into a
mixed path between Neo Prog and Metal Prog, for a result that is meticulous in
its details. In this case good rhythmic bass and drum work and when the
electric guitar launches, it is chills on the skin. Among the best tracks I emphasize
"Subjective Doubles Syndrome" because here Merging Cluster dares
more, coming even closer to Marillion period Fish (for the singing) and IQ for
the music.
With "Gift Undeserved" the discourse is
similar to the first track, while for "The Shadow Line" introspection
takes over, where every sound is thoughtful and wrapped in the tissue of past
history, including that of early 2000s Porcupine Tree. The most aggressive
track is titled "Planning The Renaissance", "Land Of The
Wait" is a caress to the soul, while the concluding "Over [You]"
closes the circle with "Dysrationalia".
The album is conspicuous in length at around
sixty-seven minutes, yet there are no real tired moments, at least for those
who love this genre that never stops making you think while listening, after
all, that is what music is all about. Intriguing. MS

NAGUAL
- And Once The Storm Is Over…
Orzorock Music
Genere: Hard Rock / Grunge
Supporto: cd / vinile / Digital
In
e oggi ritornano con “And Once The Storm Is Over…”.
Dopo
(chitarra), Giulio Armanetti (basso), Claudio Bianchi (batteria), G. Fabrizio
Defacqz (tastiere e voce), e Sara Battisteri (voce).
Il
Sabbath e molte altre ancora.
“And Once The Storm Is Over…”
Battisteri. “Too Far Gone!”
l’accoppiata Armanetti/Bianchi lavora all’unisono mentre le tastiere in stile AOR,
riempiono il suono rendendolo maggiormente accattivante. Ci si può scatenare in
“Life Kills You”, canzone perfetta per le esibizioni dal vivo con un riff
irresistibile. Fra i brani che maggiormente ho apprezzato, nomino “Where
suono moderno, ciò porta freschezza all’insieme che defluisce con estremo
piacere. Un disco da ascoltare in tutti i luoghi, specialmente in auto durante
un bel viaggio. MS

NAGUAL - And Once The Storm Is Over...
Orzorock Music
Genre: Hard Rock / Grunge

Good old Hard Rock never betrays, and it is a
pleasure, even in our times, to meet bands dedicated to this kind of sound, as
a sign of continuity after half a century of survival.
In Italy, one of the most recurring names is Nagual, a
formation from the province of Piacenza and active since 2006. They release
seven albums over time and today they return with "And Once The Storm Is

After several lineup changes in the path of their

Davide Belfiglio (guitar), Giulio Armanetti (bass), Claudio Bianchi (drums), G.
Fabrizio Defacqz (keyboards and vocals), and Sara Battisteri (vocals).
Nagual is a spirit guide, according to Aztec mythology
it is a totemic spirit, the name also fits perfectly with the Rock cause, the
band in fact leads us like a Cicerone to a journey in Hard Rock music, the
fundamental one that bands like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and
many others have handed down to us. However, their sound is also contaminated
by the Grunge genre.
So water under the bridge has passed since the birth
of the project, this suggests considerable preparation and experience behind
it, dictated mainly by the numerous live dates and the primordial passion to
perform covers of historical bands, all of which forges the band and compacts
it in all departments making it a unique war machine. "And Once The Storm
Is Over..." features eight tracks starting with the very short title track
that serves as the intro.
"Going Nowhere" presents their present-day
understanding of this style, also soiled with a brushstroke of Punk. The
guitars launch into short, lightning-fast solos, but basically it is the catchy
tune that dominates the listening. Sabia's vocal performance is excellent.
"Fading Away" is the gentler side of the sound, a vigorous as well as
classy ballad enhanced by Battisteri's choruses. "Too Far Gone!" is
pandering to the point, like a cat rubbing up against your legs that can buy
you in a heartbeat. The rhythm is clean, the Armanetti/Bianchi pairing working
in unison while the AOR-style keyboards, fill out the sound making it more catchy.
One can go wild in "Life Kills You", a song perfect for live
performances with an irresistible riff. Among the tracks I enjoyed the most, I
nominate "Where Memories Are Blind", either for that vintage hint,
but also for more care in intriguing passages and then... The guitar...
Full of energy with "Wildfire", here it is
the 80s that become apparent, while the concluding "Waterwall" with
its abundant six minutes shows the instrumental talents of the components
between tempo changes and delicate vocal interventions.
This music bears the witness of an indelible past that
we should never forget, but Nagual do it with personality through a look at the
modern sound, this brings freshness to the whole that flows with extreme pleasure.
A record to listen to in all places, especially in the car on a good trip. MS
