Mi ricordo negli anni ’80, quando leggevo le recensioni delle riviste specializzate in musica, che molti addetti ai lavori si basavano sulla legge (non scritta) del terzo album per un artista, dicendo che è quello della prova definitiva: o si vola o si cade. Ho pensato, in effetti, da allora ai più grandi nomi, e ho riscontrato qualche veridicità al riguardo, anche se non sempre nella realtà ciò è accaduto. Posso tuttavia affermare che nella maggior parte dei casi la legge del terzo album è confermata.
Curioso quindi di riscontrare il tutto anche per il chitarrista Daniele Mammarella, mi accingo all’ascolto di “Wild Universe”, nuova fatica suddivisa in dodici brani. Ho lasciato l’artista con l’album “Moonshine” (Music Force – 2021) con grandi aspettative, chiudendo la recensione in maniera più che positiva, nel frattempo accresce notevolmente il proprio background, apre il concerto ad Antonio Onorato, è ospite dei Modena City Ramblers, è finalista al “Premio ADGPA Chitarrista Emergente 2021” e viene chiamato in causa come giudice nel concorso Fingerstyle cinese “The Star Of Magic”. A seguire viene inserito nella top ten dei migliori chitarristi acustici al mondo secondo il sito inglese Musicradar.com, piazzandosi al terzo posto dietro a Tommy Emmanuel e Mike Dawes. Le date live forgiano ulteriormente il carattere stilistico del chitarrista, da annoverare il tour in Lettonia e Lituania. Sempre in sede live sottolineo la collaborazione con Bandabardò & Cisco e Ron.
La musica di Mammarella sposa a pieno la natura, proprio come le fotografie che accompagnano l’album sanno testimoniare, tutto grazie ai differenti stili musicali adoperati, che vanno dal Blues al Rock, il Folk e il Country. La tecnica è sempre sopraffina, si passa dallo Slide (collo di bottiglia) al Fingerpicking, pennata alternata, Sweep Picking al tocco volante e l’immancabile Tapping.
Ma ascoltando “Wild Universe” mi accorgo di qualcosa di differente rispetto al passato, ossia della crescita artistica del pescarese in fase compositiva oltre che esecutiva.
Si vola in America con “Wake Up (Early In The Morning)”, un allegro Blues, dove la storia sembra essersi cristallizzata fra le corde della chitarra acustica. Con l’ospite Mario Sehtl al violino si passa al Country di “Silent Fields”, provate qui a tenere a bada il vostro corpo durante l’ascolto, la vedo dura. Le canzoni sono dirette, apparentemente semplici, in realtà hanno di base una difficoltà esecutiva non indifferente. Le dita battono il ritmo sulla chitarra nell’allegra “Clio”, altro esempio di come la giusta melodia possa raggiungere le corde del cuore dell’ascoltatore. “The Meadow” con Christian Mascetta, è una scappata nel Folk nordico liberante nella mente diapositive bucoliche, ma per giungere a un frangente maggiormente riflessivo bisogna attendere “Moonflow”, vetrina per le qualità esecutive di Mammarella.
Le esecuzioni superano difficilmente i tre minuti, a conferma della volontà di ricerca dell’artista non applicata a inutili elucubrazioni. Intensa “Universe”, segue l’atmosferica “Moonlight West”, nomen omen. In “Sky River” l’ospite Reinis Juanais accompagna a sua volta con la chitarra una dolce ballata dall’animo gentile. “Light Leaves” propone un andamento cantautoriale, una divagazione dal Blues di fondo. “Windy Pt.2” si concede allegre armonie, quasi giocose, “The Last Odyssey” ha quell’energia che solo un certo tipo di Folk sa regalarti. Il disco si chiude in allegria con il mandolino di “Thank You!”, anche se in realtà sono io che ringrazio Daniele Mammarella per questo nuovo album che sprigiona serenità. La prova del terzo disco? I remember back in the 1980s, when I used to read reviews in music magazines, that many insiders relied on the (unwritten) law of the third album for an artist, saying that it is that of the ultimate test: either you fly or you fall. I have actually thought about the biggest names since then, and have found some truth in this regard, although this has not always been the case in reality. However, I can say that in most cases the law of the third album is confirmed.
Curious, therefore, to find this out for guitarist Daniele Mammarella as well, I set out to listen to “Wild Universe”, a new effort divided into twelve tracks. I left the artist with the album “Moonshine” (Music Force - 2021) with high expectations, closing the review in a more than positive way, in the meantime he greatly increases his background, opens the concert to Antonio Onorato, is a guest of the Modena City Ramblers, is a finalist in the “ADGPA Emerging Guitarist Award 2021” and is called upon as a judge in the Chinese Fingerstyle competition “The Star Of Magic”.
Next he is listed in the top ten best acoustic guitarists in the world according to the British website Musicradar.com, placing third behind Tommy Emmanuel and Mike Dawes. Live dates further forge the guitarist's stylistic character, to be counted the tour of Latvia and Lithuania. Also in the live arena I emphasize the collaboration with Bandabardò & Cisco and Ron.
Mammarella's music fully marries nature, just as the photographs accompanying the album can testify, all thanks to the different musical styles employed, ranging from Blues to Rock, Folk and Country. The technique is always over the top, ranging from Slide (bottleneck) to Fingerpicking, alternating fingerpicking, Sweep Picking to flying touch and the ever-present Tapping.
But listening to “Wild Universe”, I notice something different than in the past, namely, the artistic growth of the Pescara native in composition as well as performance.
We fly to America with “Wake Up (Early In The Morning)”, an upbeat Blues, where history seems to have crystallized between the strings of the acoustic guitar. With guest Mario Sehtl on fiddle we move on to the Country of “Silent Fields”, try here to keep your body at bay while listening, it's a tough one. The songs are straightforward, seemingly simple, in reality they have a not inconsiderable difficulty of execution at their base.
Fingers tap the rhythm on the guitar in the upbeat “Clio”, another example of how the right melody can reach the listener's heartstrings. “The Meadow”, featuring Christian Mascetta, is an escape into Nordic Folk releasing bucolic slides in the mind, but to reach a more reflective juncture one must wait for “Moonflow”, a showcase for Mammarella's performing qualities.
Performances hardly exceed three minutes, confirming the artist's willingness to research not applied to useless lucubration. Intense “Universe”, is followed by the atmospheric “Moonlight West”, nomen omen. In “Sky River”, guest Reinis Juanais in turn accompanies a gentle soulful ballad on guitar. “Light Leaves” offers a songwriting progression, a digression from the underlying Blues. “Windy Pt.2” indulges in cheerful, almost playful harmonies; “The Last Odyssey” has that energy that only a certain kind of Folk can give you. The record closes on a happy note with the mandolin of “Thank You!”, although it is really I who am thanking Daniele Mammarella for this new album that exudes serenity. The test of the third record?
