Quante volte abbiamo rivolto lo sguardo al cielo e abbiamo pensato di non essere soli. Questa vastità riesce a incuterci timore e spesso a farci sentire piccoli oltre che inutili. L’uomo ha subito nei millenni il fascino del creato, spesso affibbiandogli un significato spirituale, perché dove la mente non concepisce, subentra sempre qualcosa di soprannaturale. L’argomento è spesso trattato in composizioni musicali, specie nel Rock e anche in quello Progressivo, basti pensare alle Orme di “Felona E Sorona”, oppure ai dischi dell’Olandese Lucassen con il progetto Ayreon, Star One e Ambeon, agli Yes, e poi viaggi lisergici veri e propri attraverso band come Pink Floyd o Hawkwind e molti altri ancora. Generalmente sono composti concept album veri e propri, come nel caso dell’esordio della band di Parma Cubo Di Rubik. Grazie ad una campagna di Crowdfunding, il progetto vede prendere forma lentamente nel tempo, sino giungere al risultato di “U.P.”.
I Cubo Di Rubik sono formati da Nicola Denti alla chitarra, Salvatore Bazzarelli alle tastiere, Leonardo Cavalca alla batteria e Marilena Montarone al basso, tutti musicisti preparati che vantano collaborazioni con artisti del calibro di Cristiano De Andrè, Maurizio Solieri, Eugenio Finardi, Mogol, Custodie Cautelari, Aida Cooper, Federico Poggipollini, Eric Burdon.
Così si legge dai dati biografici tratti da Gruppi Emergenti: “La compagnia di giochi CDR Corporation sta testando il gioco MultiverX che permette di fare viaggiare le persone attraverso universi paralleli. Ernő è un uomo ricco, rimasto solo, annoiato e rassegnato; ha perso ogni tipo d’interesse verso la vita e decide di fare da cavia per MultiverX. Attraverso la macchina XC820 viene aperto un cunicolo spazio temporale e il suo corpo viene trasportato in un’altra dimensione.
Qualcosa però va storto: la compagnia perde subito i contatti con Ernő ed egli rimane intrappolato in un mondo parallelo, dove regna desolazione e distruzione.
Ernő così parte alla scoperta della terra ignota in cui è stato catapultato, così diversa da quello che gli era stato promesso di trovare. Ritrova nel nuovo mondo ancora la fabbrica della CDR Corporation e riutilizza la macchina XC820 per viaggiare in un altro universo. Da qui comincia la sua avventura per tentare di tornare da dove è partito, ritrovandosi però ogni volta in un universo parallelo differente. Un viaggio estenuante che durerà molti anni, fino al momento in cui Ernő si risveglierà nel suo letto, nella sua casa, nella sua terra. Tutto come prima, nemmeno il tempo sembrerà essere passato… realtà o illusione?".
“U.P.” è composto di otto capitoli ed è accompagnato da un libretto in cui ci sono anche le foto a cura di Silvia Saponaro, mentre il disegno in copertina è di Lalas Milla.
Trattandosi di argomento spaziale, il suono (ben registrato agli Studio Tartini5 di Parma da Fausto Tinello), non disdegna l’elettronica, anche se di base è il Rock a prevalere, grazie a buoni assolo di chitarra e una ritmica ben oliata. Nell’iniziale “MultiverX” le influenze vanno dai Porcupine Tree ai Transatlantic, uno strumentale sia tecnico che proporzionato a un andamento orecchiabile. Nella breve e tastieristica “XC820”, il protagonista si sente viaggiatore solitario in un mondo dimenticato ricoperto di cristalli, ed è con “Sic Mundus Creatus Est” che le atmosfere cominciano a essere più elettriche. Gli strumenti occupano il posto delle parole e ben descrivono le scene che appaiono avanti ai nostri occhi dettate dalla fantasia durante l’ascolto.
Tutto l’album strumentale è ricco di cambi di tempo e passaggi solo a tratti articolati e prosegue con qualità senza momenti di stanca. Di certo è un disco che potrà interessare anche agli amanti del Prog Metal e dei suddetti Porcupine Tree periodo “Deadwing”. Complimenti alla band, una bella sorpresa che va a impreziosire ulteriormente il panorama Progressivo italiano.  MS

How many times have we looked up at the sky and thought that we are not alone. This vastness manages to instill fear in us and often make us feel small as well as useless. Man has been fascinated by creation over the millennia, often attaching spiritual significance to it, because where the mind does not conceive, something supernatural always takes over. The subject is often dealt with in musical compositions, especially in Rock and even in Progressive Rock, just think of Orme's "Felona E Sorona", or the records of Dutchman Lucassen with the Ayreon project, Star One and Ambeon, to Yes, and then real lysergic journeys through bands such as Pink Floyd or Hawkwind and many others. Generally true concept albums are composed, as in the case of the Parma band's debut Cubo Di Rubik. Thanks to a Crowdfunding campaign, the project sees slowly take shape over time, until the result of "U.P." is achieved.
The Cubo Di Rubik is made up of Nicola Denti on guitar, Salvatore Bazzarelli on keyboards, Leonardo Cavalca on drums and Marilena Montarone on bass, all trained musicians who boast collaborations with the likes of Cristiano De Andrè, Maurizio Solieri, Eugenio Finardi, Mogol, Custodie Cautelari, Aida Cooper, Federico Poggipollini, and Eric Burdon.
Thus we read from biographical data taken from Emerging Groups, "The game company CDR Corporation is testing the MultiverX game that allows people to travel through parallel universes. Ernő is a rich man, left alone, bored and resigned; he has lost all interest in life and decides to be a guinea pig for MultiverX. Through the XC820 machine a space-time wormhole is opened and his body is transported to another dimension.
Something goes wrong, however: the company soon loses contact with Ernő and he becomes trapped in a parallel world where desolation and destruction reign.
Ernő thus sets out to discover the unknown land to which he has been catapulted, so different from what he was promised to find. He finds in the new world still the factory of the CDR Corporation and reuses the XC820 machine to travel to another universe. From here he begins his adventure to try to return to where he started, but finding himself in a different parallel universe each time. A grueling journey that will last many years, until the moment when Ernő awakens in his bed, in his home, in his land. Everything as before, not even time will seem to have passed--reality or illusion?"
"U.P." consists of eight chapters and is accompanied by a booklet in which there are also photos edited by Silvia Saponaro, while the drawing on the cover is by Lalas Milla.
Since this is a spatial subject, the sound (well recorded at Studio Tartini5 in Parma by Fausto Tinello), does not disdain electronics, although basically it is Rock that prevails, thanks to good guitar solos and well-oiled rhythm.
In the opening "MultiverX," influences range from Porcupine Tree to Transatlantic, an instrumental both technical and commensurate with a catchy progression. In the short, keyboard-driven "XC820", the protagonist feels like a lonely traveler in a forgotten world covered in crystals, and it is with "Sic Mundus Creatus Est" that the atmospheres begin to be more electric. The instruments take the place of words and well describe the scenes that appear before our eyes dictated by imagination while listening.
The entire instrumental album is full of tempo changes and passages that are only occasionally articulate and continues with quality without any tired moments. It is certainly an album that will also appeal to lovers of Prog Metal and the aforementioned Porcupine Tree "Deadwing" period. Congratulations to the band, a nice surprise that goes to further embellish the Italian Progressive scene.  MS
