Ho avuto modo di conoscere e apprezzare gli svedesi Soen nel 2012 con l’album di debutto “Cognitive” (Spinefarm Records) e ne sono rimasto molto colpito. La freschezza del sound in equilibrio fra il Metal e il Post Prog Moderno mi ha lasciato entusiasta, un nuovo filone, una sorgente fresca di attuali sonorità pur avendo come base il sound degli Opeth in primis, non a caso trattasi del progetto del batterista Martin Lopez. Qui però a differenza della band madre, risiedono melodie più semplici e toccanti, velate di una nostalgia particolare che solo il sound delle band nordiche sanno esprimere al meglio. Tanta tecnica in possesso degli strumentisti, ma messa al servizio della melodia di facile assimilazione. La discografia della band è ricca di splendide ballate, tutte cantate con eleganza da Joel Ekelöf, non un vocalist particolarmente dotato di chissà quali qualità, ma perfetto per questo stile sonoro. Alcuni l’hanno definito monocorde, io non sono di quest’avviso, ritengo Joel un cantante di personalità e senza mai strafare riesce sempre a emozionare.
“Memorial” è il settimo album da studio, la band parte in un crescendo qualitativo che lascia sorpresi, disco dopo disco migliora sempre più, riuscendo anche a miscelare nel sound assolo di chitarra in stile David Gilmour (Pink Floyd). Ma una volta trovata la formula vincente grazie all’album “Lotus”, i Soen sembrano girare attorno a questo modus operandi anche nei successivi tre album, lasciando da parte certe sorprese che hanno caratterizzato la loro prima discografia, soprattutto quelle dello stupendo “Lykaya”.
Tutti dischi di ottima qualità, ma stagnanti in uno stile oramai radicato.
Anche con “Memorial” non si muovono più di tanto, pur registrando brani di eccelsa qualità. Da sottolineare su tutti la ballata con la nostra cantante Elisa “Hollowed”, dove ancora una volta è la chitarra a lanciarsi in uno struggente assolo. Questo brano da solo vale già il prezzo del disco registrato sempre magistralmente. Ovviamente trattandosi di un progetto di Martin Lopez, le ritmiche sono il fulcro del sound Soen, sempre precise e tecniche. “Sincere” mostra subito  queste qualità, ma anche i fianchi ai critici che accostano il pezzo a molto di quanto già prodotto dalla band. Altra ballatona è “Tragedian”, sempre perfetta in ogni particolare e questo mi rimanda un poco al modo di fare dei tedeschi Scorpions i quali in ogni disco ti mettono avanti a due brani strappacuore. Altro pezzo dalla grande presa è il singolo “Umbreakable”, apprezzabile soprattutto per il ritornello. Per il resto diciamo routine, seppure sempre di alta qualità, fra cambi d’umore e di ritmo.
Chi non conosce la band mi potrebbe dare dell’incompetente in quanto qui c’è grandissimo materiale, consiglio loro in questo caso di ascoltare la discografia a ritroso e allora capiranno meglio il senso di questa recensione.
Questi oggi sono i Soen, non c’è nulla da fare, lo stile è ben riconducibile sinonimo di personalità, può piacere o no, in fin dei conti chi vive di musica deve pur mangiare e quando certi piatti ti giungono da una buona ricetta, perché cambiarla? Magari in un futuro prossimo mi smentiranno, chissà, intanto mi godo questo “Memorial” in barba ai deja vu. Ce ne fossero. MS

I got to know and appreciate Sweden's Soen in 2012 with their debut album "Cognitive" (Spinefarm Records) and was very impressed. The freshness of the sound in balance between Metal and Modern Post Prog left me enthusiastic, a new strand, a fresh source of current sounds while having as base the sound of Opeth in primis, not by chance it is the project of drummer Martin Lopez. Here, however, unlike the parent band, reside more simple and touching melodies, veiled with a special nostalgia that only the sound of Nordic bands can best express. Lots of technique in the possession of the instrumentalists, but put at the service of the easily assimilated melody. The band's discography is full of beautiful ballads, all elegantly sung by Joel Ekelöf, not a particularly gifted vocalist with who knows what qualities, but perfect for this style of sound. Some have called him monotone, I am not of that opinion, I consider Joel a singer with personality and without ever overdoing it he always manages to emote.
"Memorial" is the seventh studio album, the band starts off in a quality crescendo that leaves one surprised, disc after disc getting better and better, even managing to blend David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) style guitar solos into the sound. But once they have found the winning formula thanks to the album "Lotus," Soen seem to revolve around this modus operandi in the next three albums as well, leaving aside certain surprises that characterized their first discography, especially that of the stupendous "Lykaya."
All records of excellent quality, but stagnant in a style that is now ingrained.
Even with "Memorial" they do not move much further, although they record songs of excellent quality. To be highlighted above all is the ballad with our singer Elisa "Hollowed," where once again it is the guitar that launches itself into a poignant solo. This track alone is already worth the price of the album recorded always masterfully. Obviously being a Martin Lopez project, the rhythms are the core of the Soen sound, always precise and technical. "Sincere" immediately shows these qualities, but also sidesteps critics who liken the track to much of what the band has already produced.
Another ballad is "Tragedian," always perfect in every detail, and this reminds me a little of the German Scorpions' way of doing things, who in every record put you ahead of two heart-breaking songs. Another piece with a great grip is the single "Umbreakable," appreciable especially for the chorus. Otherwise let's say routine, though always of high quality, between changes of mood and rhythm.
Those unfamiliar with the band might call me incompetent as there is great material here, I advise them in this case to listen to the discography backwards and then they will better understand the meaning of this review.
This is Soen today, there is nothing to be done about it, the style is well attributable synonymous with personality, you may like it or not, after all those who live by music have to eat and when certain dishes come to you from a good recipe, why change it? Maybe in the near future I will be proven wrong, who knows, in the meantime I enjoy this "Memorial" in defiance of deja vu. There were some. MS
