Uomo e Musica
glottico a diverse armoniche.

capisaldi i Queensryche.
Cinque
(basso), Chris De Garmo (chitarra), Michael Witton (chitarra) e Scott
capolavoro contiene perle quali “Queen Of The Reich”, loro cavallo di battaglia
mini LP si estraggono due video, “Queen Of The Reich” e “Prophecy”.
“Queen Of The Reich” gira in diverse
compilation “Kerrang”. Questo mini LP li promuove a "Band dell'anno"
e il successivo Lp “The Warning” (EMI),
disco dal grande contenuto compositivo,
li conferma.
superlativo. Giusto dosaggio fra melodie intrise di arpeggi chitarristici e
pezzi Metal tecnicamente perfetti.
riconoscibile, basta ascoltare “Walk In The Shadows” e la dolcissima “I Will
parte più sperimentale è rappresentata dai brani “Gonna Get Close To You” e
“Neue Regel”.
all’ascolto ancora per parecchio tempo a venire.
“Eyes Of A Stranger” diventano dei veri e propri inni.
trasmessa dai nostri. Bella pure ”Best I Can”.
“Damaged”, “Out Of Mind”, “Lady Jane” e “One More Time” lo dimostrano. In
Now Frontier”.
Influenze Grunge possiedono
i Queensryche.
“Operation: Mindcrime” intitolata “Operation: Mindcrime II” (2006 - Rhino Records) e a seguire :
“Take Cover” (2007 - Rhino Records)
“Mindcrime At The Moore” (2007 – Rhino Records)
“American Soldier” (2009 – Rhino Records)
“Dedicated To Chaos” (2011 - Roadrunner Records)
“Queensrÿche” (2013 – Century Media)
“Condition Hüman” (2015 – Century Media)
“The
Verdict” (2019 – Century Media)

Bravi davvero. (MS)
VIDEO RECENSIONE
Versione Inglese:
IL CASTELLO
DI ATLANTE - Sono Io Il Signore Delle Terre A Nord
Vinyl Magic
Genre: Progressive Rock
Support: CD - 1992
I love choosing the debut album from
the Vercelli band Il Castello Di Atlante (without considering the 1983 single
"Semplice…Ma Non Troppo"), because, like in all these cases, the
beginnings have a very particular charm. The band, led by Roberto Giordano, was
formed in 1974, so the structural bases are built on influences from Genesis,
Yes, PFM, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, but also on the New Prog that brought the
genre back into vogue in the 80s. The band consists of Aldo Bergamini (guitar),
Massimo Di Lauro (violin), Paolo Ferrarotti (drums), and Dino Fiore (bass),
these are the "founding members", while Roberto Giordano (keyboards)
joined the band in 1982.
The New Prog is immediately apparent
upon listening to "Tirando le Somme", with that Marillion-esque pace
of Fish's era, which is loved for its emotionality and simplicity. The
keyboards are inevitably at the center of attention and feature time signature
changes. The band moves well in unison, which is the result of years spent
playing live, with memorable performances in Northern Italy that included
visual and theatrical elements. It's inevitable to compare them to other
Italian bands of the time, like Quella Vecchia Locanda, due to Massimo Di
Lauro's use of the violin. It enriches the sound and works well with Roberto's
omnipresent keyboards. "La Foresta Dietro Il Mulino Di Jhoan" is a
long and rich track with progressive touches, where the mind wanders through
sounds with an ancient perfume, and Genesis is often referenced. "Il
Saggio", with vocals and violin in the spotlight, draws heavily from the
1970s, particularly from Italian bands. Soft and delicate in the piano interventions
à la Nocenzi. The rhythm picks up in the PFM style with "Semplice Ma Non
Troppo", fun and sunny, like all our Mediterranean sensibility. The violin
enjoys scampering in this really energetic instrumental. Beautiful is also the
bass work by Fiore.
The atmosphere becomes reflective in
"Il Pozzo", with a medieval flavor à la Branduori, which doesn't
hurt, as it breaks up the listening experience, making the disc more enjoyable
overall. Choral games in "Non C'è Tempo", and I'm reminded of that great
band from the 60s/70s called Giganti. "Estate" is a stunning piece,
almost eight minutes of piano dedicated to sensitive souls, while "Il
Vessillo Del Drago" concludes this debut CD quite decently.
There are, however, some
shortcomings and naivety, and perhaps better production would have done justice
to this album, which doesn't look bad compared to many other classics from the
late '80s. As I said at the beginning, the charm of a debut is something you
can feel in the air, there's a different freshness, one given by the love for
music when played for one's own pleasure. Well done, really. (MS)

QUANAH PARKER – Nel Castello Delle

Distribuzione:
Ma.Ra.Cash Records
Genere: Rock Progressivo
Supporto: cd – 2024
Pirrotta (chitarre elettriche e acustiche, basso), Paolo Ongaro (batteria,
percussioni) e Alessandro "Unfolk" Monti (basso, voce, flauto Moeck,
(chitarra), Alessandro Simeoni (basso), e Paolo Ongaro (batteria).
aleggia sopra i nostri capi.
(consigliato l’ascolto a luci soffuse). MS

But let us come to today and the album “Il Castello
Delle Fate”, in itself the title already hints at the structural intent of this
concept that tells through the music and voice of new singer Meghi Moschino,
medieval settings where fairy witches and bewitched fairies intercede in a
castle where esotericism is at home. The theme concerns the healing power of
music. This record takes shape from live performances and becomes reality after

Immediately jumps out at you the beautiful hardback

“Verso La Porta” introduces the listener for all
intents and purposes to the castle, where in ‘Intrada E Voci Di Fate’ one is captivated
by the place emphasized with Hard Prog sounds from the endless story.
For aficionados, I can say that references to K.
Emerson, R. Wakeman and homegrown Prog of the 1970s do not exude, all
reinforced by Pirrotta's roaring guitar. Moschino's vocals (Jazz in nature)
lend charm, almost seeming to be inside the structure and smelling it so much
you are properly placed in the context. The crackling start after the brief
“First Esoteric Interlude” continues with “Stanze Di Luci Antiche”, here Prog
takes a form more related to the very meaning of the term, through structural
and tempo changes, all infused with a veil of antiquity hovering over our
heads. And here we come to “La Fata Tentatrice” humming a dirge that turns into
a persuasive and bewitching melody, one is bewitched in every sense. The
enchantment continues through “Danza Esoterica”, in which the long robes seem
to swell as they twirl during the fairies' dance. Canticles with medieval
overtones underpin the compositional structure. Fascinating are the dreamlike
two minutes of “La Fata Dormiente” and then throw themselves again into a new
ballet, the “Danza Della Fata Selvatica”, where the keyboards remain
protagonists as Quanah Parker's style has accustomed us over time. Within much
musical history, a broad spectrum of styles and decades in which this sound
world has stood out.
“Nella Stanza Di Un Carillion” plays with fairy voices
and leads into the world of dreams. Thanks to the sound of the guitars, hints of
Marillion-derived Neo Prog can be appreciated.
“Fata Nel Vento” is among the movements I enjoyed most
on the album, with its highly evocative mysterious charm due to once again
‘bewitching’ vocals. “Secondo Interludio Esoterico” is a mysterious instrumental
that leads into ‘Le Pozioni Delle Fate’ with a more Rock progression. Another
gem of the album is “Strega Fatata, Fata Stregata’, the longest song through
eight and a half minutes of spectacular enchanted tunes. The conclusion belongs
to “Giochi Di Fate Al Piano’,” where the magic of piano and vocals more than
worthily seals the work.
Quanah Parker's music today is richer in imagery than
ever before, a true camera capturing in high definition every detail
transmitting it to our imagination. If you think music is for traveling the
mind, then welcome to “Fairy Castle”! (Recommended listening under dim lights).

world has stood out.

Garybaldi
GARYBALDI - Nuda
CGD
Genere: Progressive Rock
Supporto: lp - 1972
anni ’70, dai New Trolls ai Latte e Miele, Delirium, Ibis, JET, Nuova Idea,
Osage Tribe, Picchio Dal Pozzo e Tritons, tanto per fare alcuni nomi. I
Traverso (basso), Maurizio Cassinelli (batteria) e Lio Marchi (tastiere).
(MS)

Liguria has
given birth to many bands in the Italian Rock scene of the 1970s, from New
Trolls to Latte e Miele, Delirium, Ibis, JET, Nuova Idea, Osage Tribe, Picchio
Dal Pozzo, and Tritons, just to name a few. The Garybaldi are the band of the
charismatic guitarist Bambi Fossati, an artist devoted to J. Hendrix's sound.
Previously, he had been part of the Gleemen, another band that in 1970
straddled between Beat and Beatles covers. Their album "Gleemen" can
be found, where the quartet alternates between Blues and Psychedelic Rock, with
Bambi's vocals sounding very similar to Hendrix's. In 1971, there was a moment
when the band, under both names, had Bambi's brother Ivano Fossati in its
lineup, who would later become the leader of Delirium. The Garybaldi also
included Angelo Traverso (bass), Maurizio Cassinelli (drums), and Lio Marchi
(keyboards).
When
talking about "Nuda", one can't help but think of the stunning cover
art designed by Guido Crepax, a true icon of those years, with an unmistakable
style, comic book-like, but with an exaggerated sensuality (the unforgettable
Valentina). That time, the LP cover wasn't just gatefold, but opened into three
parts, fully showcasing the representative beauty of women.
The disc is
damn rockin', with obvious references to the master guitarist of Woodstock and
citations of James Brown, starting with the excellent "Maya Desnuda",
where the band's grit showcases an enviable compactness, especially for bands
of that time.
There are
no lack of experimental and psychedelic moments, trendy and alternative.
Impressive is the long suite on the second side, which occupies the entire face
and is divided into three movements, titled "Moretto Da Brescia".
This is where the band excels, making this work unique and appealing to all
genre enthusiasts, including those of today.
The
following year, the Garybaldi attempted to repeat the success of
"Nuda" with "Astrolabio", an even more pretentious and
Progressive work in the pure sense of the term. However, I recommend buying the
first one, as it exudes freshness and a desire for music, with a capital M.
Bambi Fossati passed away in Genoa on June 7, 2014, after a long illness. (MS)

RACCOMANDATA RICEVUTA RITORNO – In
Fuga
AMS Records
Genere: Rock Progressivo / Hard
Prog
Supporto: cd / vinile / Bandcamp –
2025
Chiaramente penalizzato a prescindere negli anni
determinato disco. In definitiva, errare è umano, perseverare è diabolico.
Eppure,
album “Il Pittore Volante” (AMS Records).
Fabio Alessandrini (batteria), Jonathan Frassini (tastiere), Massimiliano
Castellani (chitarre), Barbara Barbato (soprano), Lorenzo Milone (chitarre),
Alessandro Tomei (sax), Nicola Distaso (chitarre), Marco Sodano (violino),
Mario Schirilò (chitarra), e il mitico Claudio Simonetti (Goblin) all’Hammond
B3.
Sei
meraviglia.
La
conclusione spetta alla breve “Sandrina”, composizione registrata live dallo
stesso Regoli alla voce e chitarra.
In
riesce a disegnare scenari graffianti e allo stesso tempo dai colori tenui.
valenza ascolto dopo ascolto.
E’ dovuto. MS

RACCOMANDATA
RICEVUTA RITORNO – In Fuga
AMS Records
Genre: Progressive Rock / Hard Prog
Support: CD / Vinyl / Bandcamp - 2025
The history of Italian Progressive Rock is filled with
strange phenomena, one of which is the impossibility of understanding why a
band didn't achieve the success they deserved. Clearly, in the 1970s, those who
were poorly distributed or produced in small quantities were penalized, but
later with the advent of the internet and music channels, even free ones, we
had the opportunity to re-listen and maybe even buy a certain disc. In short,
to err is human, to persevere is diabolical.
Yet, although not in an overwhelming way, the Roman
Raccomandata Ricevuta Ritorno, led by painter and singer Luciano Regoli (ex
Ritratto Di Dorian Gray), enters the legend of the greats through a stunning
album from 1972 titled "Per... Un Mondo Di Cristallo". Moreover, I
can also point out that Regoli's voice is one of the few that matches the music
proposed, a rather rare occurrence in this genre, where good vocalists can be
counted on one hand. Not by chance, RRR underwent a long stop (after the split,
Regoli and Civitenga formed Samadhi) to then reform in 2010 under the name La
Nuova Raccomandata Ricevuta Ritorno and release the beautiful album "Il
Pittore Volante" (AMS Records). Another long ten years pass before we can
hear them again with an EP titled "Nel Rock" (BTF/AMS Records), then
another long pause.
With Regoli today are the reliable and historic
friends Walter Martino (drummer of Goblin, Libra, and many others) and Nanni
Civitenga (bassist of Raccomandata since the beginning), along with them a
numerous group of guests including Fabio Alessandrini (drums), Jonathan
Frassini (keyboards), Massimiliano Castellani (guitars), Barbara Barbato
(soprano), Lorenzo Milone (guitars), Alessandro Tomei (sax), Nicola Distaso
(guitars), Marco Sodano (violin), Mario Schirilò (guitar), and the legendary
Claudio Simonetti (Goblin) on Hammond B3.
Six are the songs that form "In Fuga", and
when the needle drops into the initial groove of "Incubo", it's
immediately magical. The sound is necessarily more modern compared to the
canonical Progressive Rock, and maintains intact the energy of the band's Hard
Prog. Regoli immediately takes center stage with his unmistakable voice, while
Castellani's guitars release a deadly riff. Sustained rhythm and a good
keyboard solo make "Incubo" a great calling card, so much so that a
video was also made. Small drops of Deep Purple fall into the composition,
making it in some moments close to the 1970s in an excellent balance between
past and present.
The chimes of Big Ben open "Mary Reilly", a
more articulated song with a veil of dark melancholy. Here, the vocal
interpretation reaches an acute emphasis perfectly embedded in the heavy
context. The string section takes turns with Milone's electric guitar,
showcasing excellent individual technique in a heartbreaking performance, as
does Tomei's sax.
The side A of the vinyl closes with the seven minutes
of "Sognando", another pearl of Regoli, who embarks on a heartfelt
and vintage-tasting performance. A bitter existential consideration where a man
is consumed between the dream of flying and harsh reality. In this case, RRR
approaches the classical world of song.
Side B begins with "Nubiano" with choral
parts, pounding rhythms, and echo games. The piece is imbued with intensity,
thanks especially to the good arrangements, in full RRR style.
Followed by the nine minutes of "Ancora
l'Ombra", here you can appreciate a beautiful temporal leap thanks to
Simonetti's Hammond, which highlights the best moments of the early 1970s.
Then, when Castellani and Schirilò's guitars launch into solos, it's impossible
to keep the hairs on your skin calm. This piece, broken in half by a narrated
interlude and sax, is one of the highest moments of "In Fuga".
Violin, winds, strings, flute, and congas embellish this wonder.
The conclusion is entrusted to the brief
"Sandrina", a composition recorded live by Regoli himself on vocals
and guitar.
In short, this return of RRR is just like a painting,
where the artist manages to draw scratching scenarios and at the same time with
soft colors. A disc that you would never stop listening to, and believe me, it
gains value with each listen. I hope to encounter a work like this in more
restricted times, also because the band needs to gather the right consensus
from their ideas, the Olympus of the legendary has surely reserved a place for
them too. It's due. MS.

LUCID
DREAM - A Peaceful Death
Autoproduzione
Genere: Progressive Rock / Rock
Supporto: Spotify / cd – 2025
Esistono
Firpo (sax), e Sefora Firenze (voce).
Quindi
canzoni.
“Dawn
Of A New World” si pone subito in bilico fra A.O.R. e Metal epico senza premere
E
infatti il singolo apripista dell’album intitolato “Out Of Time” inizia
I
Lucid Dream spiazzano nuovamente con classe attraverso “Heroes Of Light”,
“Shadows On My Shoulders”, pezzo dal DNA americano restante dentro una melodia
dove i Pink Floyd fanno prepotentemente capolino. “A
MS

LUCID DREAM - A Peaceful Death
Self-production
Genre: Progressive Rock / Rock
Support: Spotify / cd - 2025
There are albums that remain difficult to place in a
specific context, it may be a virtue or for some a flaw, however an artist
generally starts with the intention of finding the right sound for what they
want to express at the moment. I say this because the fourth album by the
Italian super-band Lucid Dream interposes itself in a particular limbo that is
not Progressive Rock as we generally understand it, but neither is it Metal
Prog, Neo Prog, or A.O.R., maybe it is a combination of all of these, so I would
simply call it Rock.
I thought it appropriate to begin the review precisely
by making the proposed style clear right away, to which I would add a
remarkable care for good melodies that are easy to memorize. It could not be
otherwise given the caliber of the lineup of founding leader Simone Terigi
(guitar). Through an unchanged line up, Lucid Dream is completed by Roberto
Tiranti on vocals and bass (Labyrinth, Wonderworld, Ken Hensley, Mangala
Vallis), Karl Faraci on vocals (Arca Hadian, Odyssea), Luca Scherani on
keyboards (La Coscienza Di Zeno, Hostsonaten), Paolo “Paolo” Tixi on drums (II
Tempio Delle Clessidre, Fabio Zuffanti, La Maschera di Cera), Andrea Cardinale
on violin, Rachele Rebaudengo on cello, and Sara Calabria on viola. With them
two special guests, Paolo Firpo (sax), and Sefora Firenze (vocals).
Hence, high-sounding names in the genre scene and
leaving no doubt as to the technical/executive quality of this new “A Peaceful
Death”, consisting of ten songs.
“Dawn Of A New World” immediately balances between
A.O.R. and epic metal without pressing too hard on the sound of the electric
guitars that are not extremely distorted, which leads the listener to think
that he is in the presence of an album of this genre, but then we will see as
we go along that this is not the case.
And indeed, the album's lead-off single titled “Out Of
Time” begins softly with piano and vocals on a timely topic such as
obscurantism and the false freedom that leads man to wage wars. The guitar solo
is moving, or rather touching, so is the sax on the Hammond, a treat for the
ears. Here we are in the vicinity of 80s Neo Prog. “Open Cages” opens
acoustically through a calm and serene progression and then flows into the
string arrangement with well-crafted solos.
Lucid Dream again displace with class through “Heroes
Of Light”, an example of using background chorality and rock energy in the
service of good harmony. The sedate pace returns with “Ruins,” a sonic cuddle
devoid of unnecessary frills. “Broken Hopes” is another ballad with male/female
vocals, a song that seems not to reside in a specific tempo, it's those songs
that open your soul and make you listen to music with your eyes closed.
And then there is “Father”, another highlight of the
album, a Kansas-style Hard Prog with easy overtones and violin interventions.
It changes attitude with “Shadows On My Shoulders,” a piece with the remaining
American DNA inside a highly harmonious basic melody. Then that guitar solo.
And speaking of this instrument, Simone Terigi
performs on “The Eleventh Illusion (Acoustic Reprise)”, dialoguing with
keyboards and vocals in a round of notes with a melancholic scent. Closure is
in the hands of the instrumental “Wheel Of Karma”, where Pink Floyd peeps
powerfully. “A Peaceful Death” thus releases freshness, positivity, serenity, a
perfect record as a soundtrack to our days when we love to pause peacefully in
front of our stereo to simply listen to good music. MS
